Gymnastics #24 - The Road to Paris

alicia is going to consult the oracles

First, the sphinx will ask her three riddles. She will have to answer them all correctly. Then she will have to run seven times around the Seven Hills of Rome. Then she will have to win Survivor. Then she will have to talk an Italian grandma out of her family’s secret sauce recipe.

Only then may she receive the team.

truly earning her pay

It breaks my heart that Simone thought the world hated her after Tokyo. I was never mad at her (who the heck would ever be mad at her?!) but my heart hurt SO much for her after what happened over there and I cried when she got that bronze on the beam there because I could tell how much it meant to her. :(
I was b*tchslapping people right and left on social media 4 years ago after Tokyo. There was a LOT of criticism aimed at her - the greatest QUITTER of all time, she let her team down, she should have kept going (I'd bring up Mukhina for an example of what happens when an athlete "keeps going" when they obviously aren't on the best state of mund or body). I'm on a message board that tends to lean to the right, and I would say, wow, so y'all ARE fans of Communism because keep going in spite of not being at your physical or mental best is a Hallmark of Eastern Bloc athletic training.

The letter Jonathan Owens needs to write to his bosses:

"Dear Bears Mgmt: I will need to take a leave of absence starting on July 26th because my amazing wife is gonna go kick ass in Paris and I need to go be there for her. Please excuse me from practice/preseason so I can go be adorable and cheer her on there. I promise to come back with all my excitement and extreme motivation to also kick ass out on the field when I return. Thanks so much. Sincerely, Jonathan Owens"

She was also second at trials, ahead of Raisman. They wouldn’t have left her off even if she hadn’t had experience.
Yes, that is a very significant fact! She was also the champion on balance beam at that event and was the AA bronze medalist at that year’s Nationals.

Wong was third AA today and could have easily finished 4th or 5th had she gone 8 for 8. I'm just sad she couldn't make it, even with all the injuries, after being so solid last year.

I have no idea if this is true, but I have a feeling Wong is one of those people where gymnastics is a big part of her life, but it's not her whole life, and she'll be okay.

So, using high scores -

1) Biles, Carey, Chiles, Lee, Rivera - 176.600
2) Biles, Carey, Chiles, Lee, Roberson - 176.375
3) Biles, Carey, Chiles, Lee, Sumanasekera - 176.275
4) Biles, Chiles, Lee, Lincoln, Rivera - 176.175
I'll take team one, though I'd prefer team 3.

ETA: Do you know what the results are if you use the average of the high three?

Could be true, but she did look sad at the end of the competition as if she knew she didn't make it. I wouldn't be surprised if she tried for 2028 though.

"ice in his veins" over Brady tumbling like tim wasn't hyperventilating 10 minutes earlier over his placement

Haha, poor Paul got tagged to do the speaking for Team USA...glad he was able to talk after all that emotion yesterday!
