Gymnastics #24 - The Road to Paris

I decided to create an extremely rudimentary US ranking using scores from Winter Cup 24, Nationals 23, Worlds 23, Pan Ams 23, and in cases of those missing scores, Core Hydration 2023. I took the top 2 scores for each gymnast on each apparatus from those competitions and added them together. A total of at least 2 scores from those competition was required to create a ranking score. Then I ranked them all and awarded 15 for 1st, 13 for 2nd, 11 for 3rd and on down. Here is what I got-

I wonder if anybody would be interested if I created a gymnastics thread dedicated to talking about old competitions as to not clutter up this thread with those posts as this thread is more about the current gymnastics season and the upcoming Paris Olympics. I've been watching some old gymnastics videos and, though one of those videos, I found a great document that details the start values for every gymnast who competed at Athens in every phase of the competition.

Winter Cup was SOOO much fun this weekend and I have a ton of thoughts but I also have had a busy day today and haven't been able to get them all organized quite yet. I will come back tomorrow night and type out better and longer thoughts but here are a few things off the top of my head.....Kayla DiCello looked FANTASTIC on all four events, Trinity Thomas is definitely a fan favorite and actually looked pretty solid (I think she just became my sentimental favorite for the Olympic team....she is just so enjoyable to watch), Skye Blakeley didn't quite seem over her legs at times but her beam was pretty solid, and I watched Suni hit EVERY single hard thing in all her warm ups (her release move on the high bar is spectacular and beam was rock solid) but she looked nervous during the actual competition and ended up not doing as well there. The senior women's event was totally PACKED too which was nice to see and everyone was super encouraging to the gymnasts. It was a nicely run event and we had fun at our events (we attended the senior women's event Saturday, the Nastia Liukin Cup and Winter Cup day two for the men on Sunday). It was also a great choice to stay at the Hyatt Regency right next to the arena area because not only did we have walkway that took us right over to the convention center, there was also a ton of food options available right there too (we were right near Fourth Street Live which had a bunch of places to eat). This was a very nice change after our food adventures at last year's event where we felt like we were isolated from most of the food options all weekend.

NBC has been scaling back on all their Olympic sports. Since they chose not to air WC, there was no money for a better arena. It’s strange to do in an Olympic year but I guess everyone is downsizing.

The only real differences between this year's venue and last year's at the other convention center is that there was seating all the way around the floor area last year and there were WAY more food options at this year's location (which I appreciated since we had so much trouble finding food last year). It really was a nicely done event this year even if it was a little different and the seating wasn't all the way around the apparatus area in this venue. We had a great time!

I’m going to Olympic trials in June. Could one of you who understands us gymnastics’ decision process tell me how many of the actual four women going will be chosen as a result of trials? Gymnasts seem to have to do a lot of competitions to qualify for those four spots! I’m assuming biles is a given. Could Suni Lee possibly qualify if she performs well enough at trials?

I think they are choosing 5? Unless you mean they are choosing 4 additional at trials, in addition to automatically taking the US champion. I can't find the criteria, but they have done that in the past.

I’m guessing that the selection committee has 3 all arounders in mind and unless they are injured, will make the team. I think the 4th will also go to an all arounder, someone in the top 4-6 on the current top score list who has a good trials. That leaves the 5th slot that might be a specialist. Suni would have to really hit a high D score routine on bars and clearly out score the other 4 to make it. I don’t think she (Suni) is fully back on beam and her vault and floor aren’t currently competitive.

Agree, and considering the bars and beam abilities of the All Arounders, I feel like it is a vault start value that would be the more likely specialist especially if they have a good floor start value as well.

I want to see Lee put together all those upgrades and hit her routines. Otherwise, she's in a similar position to Liukin who tried to come back, but didn't reach the top level in time.

I wouldn't quite make that comparison. Nastia didn't compete at all for years and started a comeback too late to be successful. Suni has at least participated in NCAA competition and has stayed fit, or attempted to, with the exception of her recent health issues. Her chances of success are greater than Nastia's ever were, IMHO

We watched Suni warm up for the Winter Cup (we got there super early since it was general admission seating and we wanted good seats ) and we saw her hit pretty much everything on both beam and bars while we were there and I was specifically watching her to see how she was doing. She looks like she's in really good shape overall and seems much healthier than when I saw her at last year's events. I think she just got nervous because EVERYONE went crazy cheering for her every time she did anything (it was loud!) and that probably made her a little anxious to do well instead of just letting her body do the routines. I hope she shook out all the nerves there and that she doesn't feel too nervous at her next event!

Thanks for your replies. The # of gymnasts per team sometimes seems to change at every Olympics. I hope suni is still doing her nabaeva (if it’s as highly ranked a skill as it was before).
