From Russia with Love [#35]: Winter 2019

I don't know but some of these athletes are seemingly struggling with their priorities. Figure skating seems to be like a drug that they can't seem to walk away from, or the notoriety and fame. The sacrifices they make are so.....it's hard to take in.

The same is true for every sport. Why is it so surprising to you that someone who gave their whole life to something that they love would want to keep doing it as long as possible? But in Adelina's case, she hasn't competed in over 4 years, and she did plenty of other things in the interim (DWTS, opening a nail salon, etc). Pretty sure that nobody was under the impression she was still an active athlete.

I hear you, but so many metal pins in your neck? There will or may be other surgeries. Someone needs to help more of our athletes develop a plan B. So many other professionals and dancers do that, don't they?

Apparently, Adelina had a serious back injury for quite some time, underwent a surgery and now has metal plate and six titanium screws in her spine :scream:

I keep thinking if this has anything to do with that camel position of hers...

Her surgery was performed on a section called "neck level" and the openings (cuts) to access the damaged area went through the throat. so it it not lower back or mid-section.

My surgery was through my throat.

Is there anyone available for Eva Kuts? It’s a pity that a skater like her would be left without a partner. She was supposed to skate with someone from the USA, but since February she is on icepartnersearch, so I guess that didn’t work out.

Always the challenge for girls. As Zhiganshin said there are at least 30 girls to one boy in Russia. Might be harder to find a ice dance partner than it is to find a husband in Russia.

Great news for Khuda. Bazin is a fine, sexy skater who was just dancing by himself mostly. I thought he was going to get Annabel Morozov. Khuda is even better. Filatov wasn't getting anywhere close to her divaness.
Now someone needs to skate with Nazarov...Nazarov and Reviya are the only two good Russian male dancers their generation.

I’ll miss E/K, I always enjoyed their skating. One of my seasons highlights was seeing her land the SBS in the short at Russian Nationals, sadly the free wasn’t as good. I secretly hoped for them to run of to Belarus where any amount of Senior championships would await them.

Ugh, I don’t want to think about this! I screamed like proud mama TAT when Efimova landed her SBS at Nationals, LOL. I’ll miss them a lot but I hope they both have success with new partners.

Sad to see Stolbova retire but I think it’s the right decision. I regularly watch the GPF performance in Barcelona, one of my favourites of the previous quad. I wonder was the decision was made after CoR we never seen them skate again. I feel sorry for Novoselov, he could have got to the Olympics with France and now he is partnerless in Russia. He risked a lot for no gain.

I just realized this and now I’m bummed for him. It was a great opportunity for him but the cards just weren’t in their favor. I still think they had some potential together.

Sad also for Z/E. I thought they got a lovely send off this week, the video montage was great. I was glad to see them get their worlds medal last year. I really liked him with Gerboldt and Davankova but they can retire happy with their world and olympic medals. Loved the sword fighting short.

No matter what, I’ll always be grateful to Zabiiako/Enbert for giving me a 2:50 recap of Game of Thrones.

Stolbova/Novoselov - that made me quite sad. I so wished Stolbova to get her happy ending like Savchenko, but it was quite a long shot. The fact that it works out for one person doesn’t mean that it can work out for anyone; I think Savchenko had a huge amount of luck and Stolbova just wasn’t as lucky.

Exactly. Savchenko had a once-in-a-lifetime fairytale ending, and we probably won’t see that kind of magical moment for a long time. I think Stolbova went out on her own terms though, which is all that matters to me. Plus, we’ll still see her in shows!

Mikhail Kolyada working on his comeback. New article/interview:

Russian version:

Can’t wait to see him back! He’s really a star in Russian men’s skating, consistency aside. I miss him.

Oh my gosh, this is horrible! I really don’t know what to say. I’m glad she’s only doing shows now, where there’s less risk of injury.

I did know about this event, but I didn't notice the day, when they finally showed it on TV. I noticed this video only today, but it seems it wasn't posted.

I just don’t get this guy. He’s an accomplished skater in his own right. Jason isn’t a threat to Yagudin’s legacy as an athlete, so there’s no reason he should have a problem with him. Even if he doesn’t like his skating, there are dozens of ways you can say it without being so rude. I used to love Yagudin as a skater, but he’s hit an all-time low today.

Also, it’s really not fair to drag Voronov into the middle of this. Sergei has always been a respectful competitor.
Sorry, I know this is old news now, but am still thinking about it. I think something was lost in the translation. He is usually pretty respectful.

What kind of ass-hat are you to bring back old story with negativity against Russia? no day goes by without dishing shit on Russia? we win too much? don't want to be like you? I can easily pay couple thousands of russians and they will come on this board and start all sorts of negative issues against americans and this is not an empty threat.

How about you non-russians congratulating us russians: Good job Russia! you pairs sweep the podium in Pairs at JWC! i don't see any one posting this..... or are you only capable of praising and raving over some c-level obscure american skater with just 3 triples and no future coming in 10th at Regionals for earning minimums?

Nobody said any thing congratulatory or praising first few days when Zagi won the Worlds .... but there was plenty of snarks...

@Tinami Amori , I don't see that post as being disrespectful towards Russia, but questioning statements that one Russian, Yagudin, made. And it was asking if something was lost in translation, because "he's usually respectful" per the poster. Are you just trying to find any slight against your homeland that you can? Because this one seems pretty minimal, at best. And your "not empty" threat about paying a bunch of Russian posters to come here and slam Americans is really towards Sharpie, not the poster in question, because it's her board. I don't know, it just seems like you are making a bit of a mountain out of an anthill right now.

That being said, I hope that you are feeling better and healing.

Maybe it's the meds kicking in......because IMHO, she comes across as a bit nutty.....not worth the aggravation, if you feel me....

Well, if you have so much spare money, pity you didn’t pay a couple thousands of Russians to force French federation release Zahorski earlier. Or bribe the French federation to release her and save money for paying couple thousands of Russians.

Good job Russia for sweeping podium in junior pairs? The problem is, Russia has so many decent junior pairs who are much better than junior pairs from other countries, that it stopped being surprising that they got the whole podium. If someone is constantly good, it is suddenly expected and not much mentioned. If, for example, there was podium sweep of Russian men, that would be surprising and then it would be mentioned. (Or if UK found at least one semi-decent pair that would accidentally get anywhere close to the podium. I think we would celebrate even 4th or 5th place!) This is not a matter of being anti Russian, it is just about expectations- Russians winning in junior pairs - who else did you think could possibly win? It seems that China forgot how to grow more pairs, Czechs splits up as soon as there is someone promising...

The only question was where the Russians would place and that was the silver and bronze medals. Now, if P/R had not won, there would have been much angst snd discussion.

This is the third season in a row where Russia swept the podium in pairs. We may just be taking them for granted. The sweep was no surprise to anyone - - the big competition was Russian Junior Nationals. There were 5-6 teams who could have qualified and any combination would have ended with a sweep. Another thing is that the silver and bronze medalists had several mistakes and were quite lackluster in the free. They saved themselves with their short program scores. Panfilova/Rylov were gorgeous, but the other two were kind of bummers. The podium ceremony just didn't have a celebratory feel. Apollinaria's most 'happy' looking facial expression is stonefaced. The other two pairs still looked somewhat embarrassed for themselves with a mix of relief that they still pulled out medals. None of them really inspired me to come here and squee.

All of those things could have contributed to a lack of discussion. There's a zillion reasons ahead of being anti-Russian in the FRWL thread

That escalated quickly. :drama: And Tinami has her very own "troll farm" on call to attack anyone who posts anything less than glowing praise for all Russian skaters no matter what they do? ?

I like P/R a lot, but I just keep thinking they're going to end up exactly like Fedorova/Miroshkin. I hope to be proven wrong. A/K were not great today and the third pair is utterly forgettable. It was a pretty lackluster competition.

I don't think A/N are forgettable! I loved their short! However, I agree, with two pairs having such messy frees, I feel too badly for them to be super celebratory. Hopefully both A and partner teams will have a chance to skate more cleanly next year, although as said above, getting to Junior Worlds out of Russian Nationals is never easy!

I guess Tinami's post is just a joke. Maybe she did her best to write that post which I didn't write? :)
As for me, it seems I never wrote anything like "ass-hat", "no future coming in 10th", didn't threaten and... and e.t.c. :COP:
As for Tinami, she is used to write negative things about Russians here, isn't she? Maybe she'll return to this occupation soon. Don't worry. :)
