I can't find the settings for alerts.

It used to mark an alert as read if I viewed the thread from new posts. It's leaving a new alert after I've read the post so I end up reading a post twice from new posts and new alerts.

Are some of the new emoji only supposed to show up in mobile browsing? Because the famous eggplants looks very purple from my smartphone, but show up as boring little black shapes on my laptop.

Thank you for the new upgrades. I look forward to exploring and using all the new features. Just two things:

I was just using the mobile version of FSU, and I was wondering if you could add page numbers on top of the thread as well as keeping the page numbers on the bottom of the page.

Also, I noticed that when I was drafting a new message in one of the threads, I received a notification that new messages may have been posted in the thread. In the older version, I was able to click on the new messages to see what they were and I could respond to them as I was drafting, but in this version it doesn't seem clickable any longer.

What browser are you using? I'm using Firefox on my laptop, and they look very purply and eggplanty.

Chrome. I get a bunch of black silhouettes instead of the various emoji.

I like our old-school smileys better anyway. Get your eggplants off my lawn!

Well, Chrome is a pretty popular browser, so I would think that getting the display right for those using it might be a good idea

I don't want to downplay Server Guy's excellent work, but so far I am not a huge fan of the upgrade. The main page fonts seem mismatched in size, I haven't seen any new functions I really need, and I've never been able to tell if a site is faster. So basically I'm whelmed.

The eggplant emoji is from the keyboard so your OS needs to support that. Otherwise you get a box.

No, I get the shapes. But they're all black and kind of abstract. The eggplant looks vaguely like a Moomin.

Aah, bummer, they're gone. I prefer the old-style default smilies. They have a lot more charm and character, imho, than the new default smilies do. Otherwise, looks great!

I prefer most of the existing Default emoticons

They'll be preserved.

And thanks for getting rid of the up down arrow that was always invading my replies.

So yes it was occasionally in the way, but I haven't yet figured out anything that will take me quickly back to the top now, even at the very bottom of the page. I'm sure I am just missing something that should be obvious? Please help.

In the settings/preferences you can enable and disable the floating up button.

Hmmm, I do not see them. To clarify, I am talking about the coffee, whistling, blowing a heart kiss smilies, etc. The original ones, not the ones that have replaced them under the default tab.

That isn't what @Weve3 and I are talking about. There is a separate tab for "Default" smilies. These have been changed and are to the old Default smilies as Disney's Winnie-the-Pooh designs are E.H. Shepherd's original illustrations.

Well at least you have emojis of some kind. For the life of me, I can no longer see where they reside! I'm probably staring right at the answer, but it eludes me completely. :-(

I miss the old default emojis too - especially the one with the smirky face, one eye closed and the other popped wide open, as I used it in wtf sorts of situations. Every other change is fine so far. It still seems a little weird but in a couple of days I won’t even remember what the previous version looked like.

I'm back again ... I just used the Search function for the first time to look for a thread that dropped off the first page of GSD. It returned results from all over the site (not just GSD). There used to be a checkbox that allowed you to search for a thread in a particular forum only (e.g., in GSD only). Can we get that back?? The search works better that way--returns more specific results. Thanks.

@clairecloutier it's still there. Go to 'Advanced Search' and then you will have options along the top menu. The first is 'Search Everything,' which is exactly what it sounds like, but if you go to the next option 'Search Threads' and scroll down you will see a drop down to restrict your search by sub-forum.

Okay, thanks. That worked. But I have to say, it's more involved than the simple checkbox that existed in the previous version. It was a checkbox for "Search this forum" or something like that, that showed up below the box to type in your search term.

I usually use my iPad to read FSU. Given that I’m of a certain age, I always pinch the screen text to enlarge it. It doesn’t work on the new format. I have to manually hold my fingers on the screen after pinching it to keep it bigger. Now when I let go it pops back small and my eyes are hurting!

How does one make that setting? I’m using the new format. Not voluntarily. That is what showed up when I opened up FSU recently.
