Fall 2022-Summer 2023 New/Returning TV/Streaming Shows

We started into season 12 of Call the Midwife and so far I’m a bit underwhelmed. I‘m annoyed how they’re just writing off characters with no effort at all put into it. Sister Hilda and Sister Frances both disappeared with little notice taken (in Sister Hilda’s case, just a line or two) and it’s too bad, because I enjoyed them both. This season’s Christmas episode was definitely not as good as past ones, I thought, and I’m put off by the odd line readings and facial expressions of Trixie’s fiancé. Maybe it’ll pick up as the season goes on.
And how is Cynthia doing? ;)

Picard.

Geek alert!

THE USS ENTERPRISE-D!!!!
Also
The Borg! I know it’s not a total surprise, there’s been a lot of speculation on social media. But I thought it was well done and recreated some of the horror I remember feeling when Locutus made his first appearance. The way the Borg have quietly taken over Star Fleet without firing a shot was frightening. And cool to have Shelby back, even though she died. And I guess the Borg “transmission” means that Jack’s assimilation was completed uneventfully, since I think he was needed to broadcast the signal to all the “receivers” they had set up. OMG. And how stupid was Jack to go off like that, with his I’ll-fix-it attitude  Sure, all by yourself you’re going to take on the Borg in a little shuttlecraft. Perhaps he was already falling more completely under the Queen’s spell, which would make it less annoying, but they didn’t make that clear. I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

A friend recently subscribed to Paramount+ so we've been going through the Star Trek: Discovery episodes and Ready Room recaps. I have to say I'm thrilled they brought in Wil Wheaton because he does a much better job of running the interviews. Naomi Kyle had moments where she was nerding out but not to the extent that Wil does. He also asks better questions and has the ability to keep the conversation flowing naturally.

Yes, Wil is doing well, except every now and then he is a bit over the top. I really liked Discovery but I don’t think I watched all of the Ready Room episodes. I’ve watched them all along with Picard, and especially this 3rd season has been great on the Ready Room.

ETA: Now that I think of it, Discovery was okay but I really liked Brave New Worlds, and it’s coming back mid-June for its second season. :cheer2: I also have to say it’s crazy to think what’s become of Gene Roddenberry’s dream and the original Star Trek series almost 60 years ago! I got a little misty eyed at this most recent episode of the Ready Room when they showed Archer signing for Earth for the United Federation of Planets treaty. I thought Enterprise was just okay but I might go back and watch some. I remember a reviewer calling the crew “the guys who fly with their hands over their hearts and their hearts in their throats.”

We are going to start on Picard next. I'm looking forward to that one. Not sure when we will get into Prodigy and Lower Deck. We most likely will watch those at some point but there are other Paramount shows we would watch after Picard.
When I watched the first season of Picard I enjoyed it for the most part. The second season, I was alternately :cheer2: and:wall: but the ending at the second season (I forget if it was really in the last episode or the penultimate one) was:swoon: and I loved it so much. This season is so much fun and so nostalgic, I’m enjoying it a lot. I have not watched Prodigy or Lower Deck; maybe I’ll try them some time but like you said, there are other shows to watch. I find I watch more on Paramount than any other streaming service.

If you like Star Trek you will probably like Brave New Worlds. But you do need to know a section of Discovery for everything to make sense. I actually had to go back and rewatch that section. But I really enjoy Brave New Worlds a lot; it has the same sense of adventure that the original series had. Which I still can’t believe is almost 60 years ago!

My favorite ST series right now is Strange New Worlds. It has the spirit of the original but with a more modern flare. I enjoyed season one of Picard but wasn't enthralled. And, as far as I'm concerned, it's only gotten worse over seasons two and three. I find the plot this season to be preposterous and it doesn't make any sense either. And some of the dialog. :yikes: I'm watching it out of loyalty to the entire franchise but am very happy I don't have to endure a 4th season.

I just finished the fifth and final (I didn’t know it was the final one when I watched it) season of what has been probably the most relevant show I’ve seen in the past five years, Aggretsuko. Our favorite mild-mannered office worker/closet rage metal banger is back and now her rage is for all of Japan to see:

Most of us maybe angry about different things but I think life lately has made us all harbor an inner rage we just want to let out.

Yes, Strange New Worlds is the best Star Trek since Star Trek. It really captures what made the original so good whilst also updating it. Really looking forward to S2.

I don't necessarily think you have to have watched Discovery to understand Strange New Worlds - yes, there are some references but on the whole I think people will figure it out regardless (but if someone must, they only need S2 of Discovery - I also went back and re-watched that season after Strange New Worlds). I did, however, have to send a colleague of mine to YouTube to check out some original Star Trek to disabuse them of what they thought would happen between Spock and T'Pring in the future.
My husband is really enjoying the third season of Picard. He thought the first two seasons were only so-so but likes this new season much more.
I agree with that. The first seaosn was fine but didn't really grab me. I liked S2 better, but don't really want to go back and re-watch it. Loving S3 though and will likely watch it again.

You don’t have to have watched it, but you won’t fully understand some things in Strange New Worlds if you haven’t watched the second season of Discovery. I must not have totally paid attention and found I needed to go back and watch it again to really get what was going on with Pike.

I am loving Season 3 as well.

I started watching The Diplomat (Netflix) after hearing an interview with Keri Russell on Fresh Air. It’s basically The West Wing meets The Americans. Action packed and great and funny dialogue. I might have watched 3 episodes last night after my trip this weekend got canceled.

I am planning to watch soon as well, and am excited for it. I just need to wait until work calms down (i.e., semester ends) so that I can watch without being distracted.

I may have watched the entirety of The Diplomat, but I’m admitting nothing. I didn’t mean to, but I turned it on while working on some mindless tasks and then it stayed on… and then I had to see how it ended so I finished it this morning. I enjoyed it!

Keri Russell will forever be Felicity… lol.
