Earth, Wind & Fire founder Maurice White, whose horn-driven band sold more than 90 million albums and made hits like "September," ''Shining Star" and "Boogie Wonderland," died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, his brother Verdine said.

White, who was 74, suffered from Parkinson's Disease and had retreated from the public even as the band he founded kept performing.
...
Earth, Wind & Fire, a nine-piece band centered featuring the two White brothers, singer Philip Bailey and the distinctive horn section, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. The band's most successful period started with the 1975 album "That's The Way of The World" and continued through the rest of the decade. Other hits included "Serpentine Fire," ''That's the Way of the World" and a cover of the Beatles' "Got to Get You Into My Life."

Lyrics (excerpt):
...
Looking back, we've touched on sorrowful days,
Future pass, they disappear
You will find peace of mind
If you look way down in your heart and soul
Don't hesitate 'cause the world seems cold
Stay young at heart, 'cause you're never, never old

Dancing in September will forever bring me back to roller skating or being at the pool. I saw them at Summerfest with Chicago a few years ago and it was a fantastic show. The drummer for the Foo Fighters, of all bands, was sitting in for Chicago's drummer. It was 3 hours of beautiful jams. May he rest in peace.

I am heartbroken, although Maurice had been ill for many years.

I attended at least five of their concerts between 75 and 83, I was in love with Philip Bailey, but Maurice was a genius too.

They were so so so much more than disco for which some people know them.

"Shining down on this great beyond,
thoughts ignite us,
let love unite us
.....
every time you smile,
you bless a child....

and our spirits, they will be one ...."

A great loss. :( I'm going to quote myself from the favourite Earth, Wind & Fire Song thread/poll from a few years back, some of their lesser known songs:

...I have spent the last hour listening to songs that would not fit into this poll, all of which hit the top 40 on the pop charts, or charted high on the R & B charts:

Mighty Mighty - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyRFixbAAuo

Devotion - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsBwLnOfMcU

Can’t Hide Love - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wr0ekZlcM8E

Saturday Nite - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOB7iI1rCPU

In The Stone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbPxUxNtVR8

Star - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AEi7btgSus

Magnetic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvBe5Wfsek0&ob=av2el

System Of Survival – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHrHzCrJXww

Thinking Of You - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ux6MLIjJT_4&ob=av2el

So which are your favourite EWF songs? (Vote for all 12 if you like.) :)

I heard about this the other day. Maurice White and his group were such groundbreaking innovators. It has been said that they and other creative music artists of their day (1970s) created real music, as opposed to what exists these days.

Earth, Wind, & Fire's album covers and their music were so evocative and inspiring -- their sound is as engaging and relevant today as ever. Timeless!
