DWTS S26: All-Athletes Edition! (i.e. the DWTS thread for NOT yammering about what happened 24 years ago)

Adam has been dominating YouTube views, I mean DOMINATING!

Mirai I think is coming in second. Tonya's are high too! Wonder if this translates to votes. I think it does.

I have to say with Adam ringing in such high scores and having the most views (by a huge margin) this is his season.

I like the comments on YouTube when some woman sighs..."Im in love with a gay man." And then the next woman says "Join the club." jajajajajaj Love it.

Tonya did real good last night too. That fit her. She is really enjoying it. I dont want to bring up Nancy in this as well.... but when she was on she wasnt as warm and excited as I think Tonya is being.

P.S. And yes that bear is not necessary. But this whole show jumped the shark years ago when it started involving up to 8 other dancers in the persons dance. I dont get it when you are doing your foxtrot and there are 6 other dancers on the stage with you at the same time. For me it ruined the authenticity of the show. Last season I watched was Rumor's. Tho I did tune in for some of Nancys.

I'm pretty sure that dancers don't choose their own music. I can understand Jennie vetoing a song that she felt was inappropriate but IIRC that seldom happens.

In past seasons, the pros make a list of song requests. If they're lucky, in a 10-week season they get two or three of their requests.

I can't imagine what Jennie found so objectionable about the song. DWTS tames the songs down considerably, so how bad could it have been? Kesha's "Woman" was a totally different song when Vanessa Lachey and Maks danced to it. But if she did feel it was offensive to her, producers should have heeded her request immediately and not drag it out three days.

Regardless of what one may think of Tonya, I think she's been dancing great (far better than I expected) and she looks like she's having the time of her life.

She's never going to be America's sweetheart. But I'm happy she's able to be at peace with herself, if just for the moment.

I think Mirai, Adam, & Chris are the best so far. But IMO Lindsey is the best & the most imaginative choreographer. Her dance with Kareem was so entertaining. I am really happy that Jenna & Alan got their own celebrities & I think both are rising to the occasion.

I want a Mirai vs Adam final.

Agreed. But as we all know, creating conflict can make great reality tv.

Where was Jason sitting? I didn't see him in the audience during the show.
Jason can be glimpsed on the right side of the screen as the camera pans in on Adam as he is taking selfies in the audience (before he leaves to start dancing his Quickstep) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgTaqIALD24&t=1m38s

Jason shared these photos today: https://www.instagram.com/p/BihWLtcBjhr/?taken-by=jasonbskates

Meryl & Nathan wore Mickey Mouse ears that lit up during Mirai's foxtrot -- here's a tweeted screen cap: https://twitter.com/lynthatye/status/993660559034810369

Meryl shared this photo from last night (she's with 3 other past DWTS competitors): https://www.instagram.com/p/Bif5AOMnb0K/?taken-by=meryledavis

For a second as Bruno complimented Mirai on being the embodiment of a fairy tale princess, and she answered, referencing Meryl Davis, "Actually, the real queen is sitting right over there," I thought the camera was going to pan to Adam.

My favorite part of the night... all hail Queen Meryl! Too bad the Quad King didn't get a shoutout too.

Just watched Adam’s quickstep. Hmm, feet and frame definitely need work (he should watch Evan’s quickstep, that was amazing!) Haven’t seen Tonya’s dance this week, but her feet and frame in the foxtrot were way better than Adam. I think much will depend going forward what dances they pull. If Tonya can stick to modern (foxtrot, quickstep, waltz, tango) she will be fine. Adam needs to stick to the Latin dances.

Off to watch Mirai.

I love Tonya's dress and dancing, but WTF at the dancing bear? Distracting! I haven't watched for years, what's up with all the props and other dancers running about.

I love Tonya, always have since her competitive days. Though I don't believe she's 100℅ innocent, I feel like she's paid enough and glad to see her so happy.

Mirai is another favorite female skater of mine. What a wonderful performance. Goofy ass package, though, gag. Blasphemy, but I can't stand Disney. Loved the spin at the end and boy is my gal ripped. Those arms!

It was nice to see Adam serious and not playing the witty card. I've always admired his work ethic and his artistry in his skating and it shows in his dancing! Amazing.

I know right! Actually, I kept waiting for one of the hosts to announce his presence! I mean he's sitting right there with Meryl! The reigning World champ in Men's figure skating! The team Olympic Bronze medallist along with Mirai and Adam! The Quad King! Or the 'Quad Bae' as Mirai sweetly calls him! :D And I LOVED the lighted Mickey Mouse ears! I was so tuned into Mirai and Alan's dance at first viewing that I actually didn't notice those (nor the fact that Mirai wore a LIGHTED gown!) until I watched again!

It was her son. Her husband was there as well.

Yeah, Tonya pointed out that this is a once in a lifetime thing. I agree with her. Likely she'll never get such an opportunity again and at least her boy saw her doing a fun and terrific dance on tv! :) And sometimes alumni (even the non-winners) are invited back - she might be too at some point. I've just had another thought - I wonder if they'd dare invite her to any future DWTS tour? Or is it just the winners that are invited for that tour?

I wonder if the competitors are getting paid the same as those from longer seasons? These are two hour episodes after all. I hope they are all paid well.

Well, he did manage to get in a few good zingers when talking with the judges. But I get what you mean.

P.S. Telling that Adam had no backup dancers.

Yep. Just one reason why I vastly preferred Adam's quickstep to Tonya's this week. No gimmicks, no distractions necessary. I mean, she danced well, but all of the extra stuff was just... annoying.

I always imagined her performing with a low quality dancing bear, but I thought it would be a whole ensemble of cut rate critters on ice . . . and she would be wearing one of the furry costumes :EVILLE:

Hmm, her being banned may have actually saved her from a life of that. Might as well work at Chuck E. Cheese. Still, I could have done without the dancing bear in the routine.

(In case somebody here doesn't know: Jennie was originally supposed to dance to "You Make Me Feel" by Janelle Monae, which is the song Zach&Madi are skating to on SOI.)

Janelle just recently came out as queer so I guess Jennie realized the song is not a heterosexual anthem and didn't want to be associated with what Janelle and/or the song represents. I've gotten the picture Jennie's pretty conservative, which would explain why she kept talking about her "values" that clash with the song.

Yeah... that decision may send her to the finale. The audience for DWTS tends to be more conservative. Viewers often vote for people because their declare their Christian values even if they can’t dance.

That’s a problem for Tonya because I expected conservative voters to vote for her.

When the "All-Athletes" concept was announced, I was under the (mistaken) impression that TPTB were attempting for parity among the contestants. But srsly, to call Kareem an "athlete" at this point in his life is ridiculous. And to imagine that a softball pitcher could compete on an even playing field (no pun intended) with a figure skater....

What would you call Kareem? A has-been? And I think a softball pitcher could compete very well - it depends on the softball pitcher.

Kareem is one of the greatest ever in his sport. Now he's just older, but despite health challenges he appears to be in good shape. You never know who is going to be a good dancer. Some people who I expected over the years to shine were awful and others of whom I expected little have been very good. Any athlete in decent shape has a reasonable chance of being good. Why not Jennie Finch? She's beautiful, fit and probably takes at least one of her kids to some sort of dance lessons.

There have been young "stars" that were awful (Bristol Palin, Chaz Bono). There have been older dancers that were very good (Florence Henderson, the guy that announces the dog shows, Jane Seymour). I did read that they did think about inviting one former starting Cleveland browns qb (there have been many starting qbs) on the show, but Manziel was rejected for being too controversial. There are some browns qbs that wouldn't be controversial at all but I doubt they would be good dancers (Tim Couch, Kelly Holcomb, Derek Anderson, Brandon Weeden).
