Sadly, Diana Rigg who starred as Emma Peel in The Avengers has died. RIP. She is the second Avengers actress to pass on this year (the other being Honor Blackman)

I loved her as Emma Peel. Whip-smart, highly educated, gorgeous, humorous, and skilled at karate: everything a man could possibly want in a woman, except for the uncertainty, until her final episode, about whatever happened to Mr. Peel.

Rigg was also the best Bond girl ever, the Contessa Teresa di Vicenzo, and would have made a great 007 herself, had the producers back then been thinking outside the box.

:fan:

I've never seen the Avengers TV series - I was too young when it was first shown. But I do remember Diana as Olenna Tyrell on Game of Thrones - she was awesome. Stole every scene she was in. Olenna was kind of an awful human being, but tbh so were most of the characters on that show - including the so-called protagonists.

I loved her! In the height of her Game of Thrones revival, I saw her live in My Fair Lady on Broadway and she had such a commanding presence. I sat near the side of the thrust stage, and I got to overhear her do some background, off-script, in-character dialogue during the ball scene. She was a consummate professional.

She rid the world of Joffrey. That makes her awesome. :respec:

She had a long career and is famously known for her role on the Avengers and that wonderful "Cat Suit". I loved her in her more recent roles
as Olenna Tyrell in the Game of Thrones and as the Duchess of Buccleuch in Victoria.

RIP to a class act.

She was hilarious as Duchess of Buccleuch.

My Dad was a big Avengers fan, so I have many happy memories of watching the show with him. Mrs Peel was such a remarkable character and Diana Rigg was able to beautifully combine the character's sexy, intelligent and powerful aspects. It was a testament to her talent that she was able to transition her image and continued to get good roles well into her 70's.A few years ago she even acted on Dr Who with her daughter which was an opportunity I'm sure they both enjoyed. She managed to exude class and nobility while also coming across as accessible and someone you'd like in real life. RIP and thanks for the memories.

She gave class to any project in which she was involved - and was a role model for empowered women and a superb actress.

Mr. Steed and Mrs. Peel and their partnership are very fond memories of my childhood.

This. It really bugs me to see the tributes that are just "Woo, Mrs Peel was sexy." The character was so much more than that - she was sexy and smart and athletic, and there were very few other female characters at that time where all of those qualities were equally important. And Diana Rigg played that combination perfectly, and made Mrs Peel an inspirational role model.

Not only was she stellar in all that has been mentioned here, but I remember a series I saw on PBS in the '80s called Mother Love. She was fantastic in that - possessive, manipulative, and evil in her attempts to forever be the sole object of her son's love and devotion. She was amazing. RIP to a true talent.

If anyone is interested, some kind soul has posted audio clips on YouTube of her performance in Colette. This was a musical she was supposed to star in on Broadway in 1982, but the show got cancelled on the road. The audio is from the tryout performances in Seattle (which some of my friends made a road trip to see, but I couldn't go :wuzrobbed )
