Anyone know if the MGM Grand or Motor City Casino will run their shuttle to and from the arena during this event?

A shuttle sure would be nice. I just checked the extended weather forecast, and earlier that week, snow and highs in the low 20s are forecast. Lows are about 16 degrees. I'll be staying at the Aloft. Anyone else staying there, or arriving at the airport on Fri. mid afternoon? I would be interested in sharing an Uber or Lyft ride. My flight gets in around 3pm. Please PM me. Thanks!

The reason I asked is both the casino hotels claim to run a shuttle to the arena. Wasn’t sure they will do that during this event

I have my Skate Radio out to pack. Anyone know if I will need it?
I tried using it last year and it didn't work at all for me. We asked around and found out that they were switching to an app which was only available for iPhones (but I'm not sure that was working either - we checked with the only iPhone user in our party). I'm an Android user, so no joy for me. You could take it to try, but I'm not sure they're going to be using them this year if not last year.

I thought last year there was some sort of frequency conflict with the AV in the arena that prevented the radios from working. But I haven't heard anything about them since. My favorite part about the radios was the technical channel where a TS would explain the levels and calls. But was that somehow connected to IN's coverage? If so, since there is no more IN, we wouldn't get that.

I actually think it's more of a volunteer effort by the guy who does it. (One of the Santee brothers?) But IN may have had a role which would make it unlikely to continue. Unfortunately I don't think you will know until you get there.

The USFS booth personnel told me that a sponsor (I think Prudential) paid to have the new software written, and it was for Apple products only, not Android. So if you have an iPhone or an iPad, that's your best bet.

I was most unhappy, because more people in the US have Android phones than iPhones (I checked for statistics online, and we all know the Internet doesn't lie!)

Is there an update of this. I can't see it on the Nationals website.
Here's a reply today in the U.S. Nationals forum:
FYI - I have been told they are adjusting it for the most recent withdrawals and it will be posted again as soon as they get it caught up.

That’s interesting, The app does show skate radio for this event on the icenetwork app.

Since they won’t be broadcasting or promoting icenetwork I’m curious how that anyone is going to know about this.
It also says it's $59.95. Not worth it for skate radio.

From what I've been told the only hotels to have a shuttle will be the two official hotels, the Westin Book Cadillac and the Crowne Plaza Riverfront.

Those are the LOC shuttles serving the skaters and others with credentials. They are not available to fans. The shuttles posters are talking about above are the hotel's shuttles, that some hotels provide to various places to guests - it sounds like some hotels provide a shuttle to the arena, I guess for out-of-towners who come to the city specifically for a game. I don't believe the Westin has such a thing...they are a couple blocks from the Q Line, that goes directly to the arena anyway.

I'm volunteering but they told me those were the only hotels that provided shuttles to anyone but I dunno how accurate that is! In San Jose the official hotels had fan shuttles as well but those were the only hotels that provided them there.

Oh, OK, if you are volunteering, you'll have a credential, so you can ride the LOC shuttle. That's the only shuttle they would be familiar with. If someone else happens to be at a hotel that has some sort of regular shuttle for guests to various places in town, it would be worth looking into.

Yes, in San Jose, there was a fan shuttle that was separate from the credential shuttle (and was freakin expensive) but there is no fan shuttle this year.

How safe it is to walk from Q Line stations to the hotels such as Westin or Crown Plaza (both takes 4-5 minuts on foot) after the competition is over? Would it be wise to use Lyft or Uber?

For someone in the area, please. We are hoping to take Lyft or Uber from the airport to our air bnb in Windsor, Canada. Are we going to have a problem? Is there are better way?

There might be lineups at the border if you are going back and forth due to the federal workers (border patrol) not getting paid when you travel from Canada to USA. There have been border delays

I still have no idea what to wear in this weather! I have one coat that could potentially work. I think I may need something heavier. It's this jacket which I got in Boston for Worlds when it started snowing and I freaked about having no appropriate clothes  Will I freeze? I have layering shirts and nice sweaters so I was planning on that, plus the jacket, leggings under jeans, and I got some boots. I need gloves and a hat. My skating gloves probably won't cut it. I don't even know. HELP ME, I'm from LA, I don't know anything about weather under 70F which to me is cold

I'm definitely not the person you want to consult on wardrobe issues, but I spent 4 winters in southern Michigan, and I expect it to be miserably cold. Do not forget the impact of the wind--a very cold wind, for which Blame Canada. The less exposed skin, the better. On the bright side, it will almost certainly not be as cold as St. Paul Nationals, so there's that.

I plan to take 3 pairs of polypro long johns. I'm not sure I have a pair of heavy wool slacks that will fit me, so I will have to make do with layers. I don't know whether I will be able to wear all 3 pairs of long johns at the same time, but I have often worn a double layer of them at Nationals.

My usual approach for my hands is to wear a pair of lined wool gloves inside a pair of lined mittens.

I have inexpensive low-rise snow boots with a rubbery sole (good insulation if you are walking on snow or ice) and fake-fur lining. Inside those I wear a pair of regular socks inside skiing socks, which I think are polypro. I also have heavy SmartWool socks I sometimes use as the outer sock layer.

Keeping ears covered is important. A lot of hats don't stay in position, so I use an ear wrap under my hat.

My cold-weather-Nationals scarf is tightly knitted Icelandic wool. I wrap my head like a mummy.

Yes, I do look charming, rather like an overgrown child heading off to kindergarten.

It depends on how long you think you will be outside. If you will be going from cars to buildings fairly quickly, you may be slightly uncomfortable but ok. If you think you will be walking longer distances, then I’d get something much heavier.

The temps have been fairly moderate around here this winter, but we are forecast to get a lot of snow Saturday then a deep freeze. We like to welcome our guests that way. ;)
