They’re both in central/eastern Canada—not that far away, right?? :confused: Obviously, one of them would have to move to the other’s city. But that’s typical in pairs.

I would hope they at least try out together. I think they’d be a good match in terms of height differential, line, and general look. Only a 2-year age difference, and Luba is by far the most experienced and polished partner who’d be available to him in Canada (if not, admittedly, the best side-by-side jumper).

All that said, it’s possible he already has a partner lined up.

I can't help but think it's too bad Battle of the Blades isn't on anymore with Meagan, Lubov and Tesza retired, they'd be great

I'd be shocked if Lubov had any desire whatsoever to return to competing. I somehow don't think it's her thing.
I would expect she and Dylan would do all they can to find pro opportunities while she takes on some coaching duties.

If the opportunities aren't there in show skating, if Dylan gets distracted by other career opportunities, if Dylan's body is giving out on him...are all factors that could cause her to re-evaluate options. But that may be a bit down the road.
 
I'm told Natasha Purich has had to have knee surgery. I wouldn't think that would bode well for getting any new partnership off the ground.
 
Uh oh. MTM2's travel to Milan isn't going smoothly... to say the least. Kirsten tweets:
Travel to #WorldFigure: a series. We arrive to Montreal airport to learn our flight from Frankfurt to Milan has been cancelled. Mike gets booked on a new flight two hours later but has taken the last seat. I get booked on a flight six hours later.

Mike (true gentleman) offers to switch his ticket with mine so that I can go early. I decline his offer. We get to Frankfurt to realize that Mikes earlier flight has been cancelled. And he waits in a three hour line to get rebooked. Eventually gets rebooked for 12. Hours. Later.

I am sitting at my gate for my later (which is now actually earlier) flight, crossing my fingers that it will not show up as cancelled any second now. Mike will wait here for six more hours. So to sum up.... maybe we’ll see you in Milan... maybe we won’t. :ROFLMAO:

This seems to be a common theme, as a lot of athletes have been posting on social media about flight delays. Kaetlyn Osmond, the Knierims, and Mirai Nagasu have all had some significant flight delays. Although Kaetlyn has subsequently arrived (not sure about the rest). Maybe they were all on the same flight that was originally cancelled.
 
I guess late winter/early spring weather is particularly unstable? A week or 2 ago, the Canadian Junior Ladies curling team was trying to get from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Aberdeen, Scotland and it took them 50 travelling hours! And their first flight even left and arrived on time. They just couldn't get from London to Aberdeen without a lot of backtracking.
 
Why oh why do skaters check their skates? Figure skates with blades mounted are allowed in carry on out of Canada.

Yes.. as long as you are on a direct flight and Canadian/North American airline you can carry on.

If you have a connecting flight in Europe (& I'm pretty sure Asian countries too?) OR on the way back (even if you are flying a Canadian/North American airline) the skates need to be checked.

However, I know if you call the airlines before travel begins and get connected to a good service rep, you might be able to have them put it in your travel file that you have received permission to carry on. I know someone who called multiple times and spoke to various people who said "yes" & "no" , and finally got someone who agreed to put it in the travel file -someone who didn't have this on their travel file was told to 'throw' the skates away!!! -the mom was there and was able to get the skates as carry IIRC.
 
@CdnSk8Fan It is the security people at the airport who know whether or not you have skates, not the airline. Furthermore, if you are making a secure connection in Europe, say through Frankfurt, then the only security you go through is in Canada. On the way home isn’t an issue because if they are lost for a day or two it doesn’t matter. Having said that I know of skates that have been carried on from European airports to Canada. It just seems to me that skates, costume, tights, and one set of practice clothes should be carried on.

I understand that it's the security people who know about the skates. But they are not allowed in the EU as carry on per their security requirements so even if you are doing connecting flights, skates are generally not permitted for connecting flights.
I know of many skaters who have had issues with connecting flights and have to check their skates because of this.
 
I've always had to go through security again in the EU when making connections so I doubt they would be allowed to carry them on there. I doubt skaters check skates because they want to or don't know the rules. They have coaches and teams with them that are well-traveled and familiar with the situation and I don't think they would check them unless they had to.

Meagan Duhamel is raising hell on twitter with Lufthansa, as it sounds like the skates still haven't been found as of half an hour ago. Alex Kang-Chan Kam is missing his too.
 
It seems to me that even if you had to check them in Europe, it would make sense to carry them on to Europe. Baggage tends to get lost during connections, so at the skater would know the skates made it to say, Frankfurt, then then check them to Milan. As for people know the rules, I wouldn’t count on it. We have carried skates on all over the place and the number of times well meaning coaches and skaters have told us we can’t is, well, pretty much every time.

I think sometimes people just don’t think anything will go wrong. It is that old “it has never happended before so why would it happen now” kind of logic. I have heard of costumes not arriving. Now that it something that can definitely be put in carry on. Again, why wouldn’t you just to make sure?
 
I'm not sure why people feel the need to insult skaters for the plans they have made without knowing all the facts instead of assuming that they did the best they could under the circumstances.

Anyway, apparently both Drew and Alex have new skates and have made it on to the practice ice. I can't imagine that brand new skates is the ideal solution but it is better than not being able to compete at all. I wasn't expecting either team to make the free skate based on their Season's Best, so I hope they don't let this affect them too much.

I connected through Frankfurt and we had to go through security to get to the connecting flight gates. It was a pain and caused us to miss our flight to Milan because it was so slow (and we went through the "fast" line).
 
All of the European transfers require you to go back through passport control and security. Really need a direct flight or do the transfer in the States if a flight to Europe. We have considered that even flying from Toronto just to avoid the hassle in Europe even though our passport line is shorter as we have both Canadian and European passports. Of my last 4 flights to Europe the past two years my luggage didn’t make it 50percent of the time.
 
I once had to go through security twice in Frankfurt: once when we had a shuttle bus that dropped us off outside the airport security area after picking us up after we landed, and then to go between terminals. A third was my own fault, because I decided to go to the lounge during a five-hour layover.

I loved flying Lufthansa, but the Frankfurt terminal is a rabbit warren.

You sure seems like knowing more about skates and travel than long-time members of the national team and the team surronding them... because you sure have more experience than these silly goofy skaters and coaches that travel all the time abroad. :rolleyes:

I think mag’s kid was an international competitor, so she knows a lot about travel with skates...
