Canadian Pairs 2017/2018 Season News and Updates

If I/M do go back to an old program, I'd pick their 2015-16 Rachmaninov Symphony no. 2. They only hit their stride with that program at 2016 Worlds, and I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

I enjoyed "From Russia with Love" a lot, too. But i think they've probably moved past it? After all, Luba's a Canadian now, officially.

I think they'll give the new LP at least one more shot at their next Grand Prix. I'd like to see it skated clean (or cleaner).

And it was kind of tongue in cheek, with her at first trying to be released from Russia when they started it, to her finally getting her release while still competing it.

And now she's officially Canadian (her wikipedia even refers to her now as a 'Canadian pair skater' - not even Russian-Canadian). She really has come to us from Russia, with love.
You could go change her entry in Wikipedia, which is far from being the bible... ;)

I was just coming on here to post about them.

Can someone please remind me why she left Dylan?!?!?!?! :wall:

It doesn't matter. It's old news, and both teams have moved on. Similar to Katsalapov/Ilinyh, nothing can be done about it at this point. Anyway Kirsten/Michael skated fairly well and were in 4th place going into the fp at CoC.

If we want to compare sp scores at first GPs for top Canadian pairs: D/R first; S/B second; I/M third; M-T/M fourth. And in fps, the results are the same for the top three, and we'll see what happens for M-T/M in fp at CoC shortly. Even though comparing scores across events is not necessarily a predictor of future outcomes.

I think MT/M are starting to look stronger than I/M.....

Wouldn't surprise me if MT/M beat I/M at Nats and go to Olys. Maybe I'll have a different opinion if I/M dump that awful LP.

MT/M are definitely benefiting from being Richard Gauthier's number one team.

I personally prefer I/M over them and who knows what January will be like but yeah right now, I/M have some serious decisions to make heading into Canadians about their LP.

MTM's SP score from Cup of China didn't exactly set the world on fire though (and is lower than what Dylan and Luba put out with bigger mistakes at Skate Canada). ETA that a GP medal says a lot though. I think that neither Dylan and Luba nor Julianne and Charlie will get the benefit of the doubt this year at Canadians like they arguably did in the past.

Agreed that Dylan and Luba need to change the free program. My first instinct was the Groban one but after a little thought, I preferred the Rachmaninov too. I think it's the best contrast to the SP and I love Luba doing something classical.

No commentary on Kirsten and Michael at CoC? I suppose no one wants to jinx them for the fp. ;)

After COC I would see KMT/M are Canada #2.. not impressed with Dylan Lubov this year, not a fan of the long and he throws her around like a sack of potatoes after she misses the triple jump, I don’t like that. Nationals will be interesting

Looking at the score thus far between these teams:

(GP score then Sr. B score)

M-T/M
SP: 62.52, 65.76

FS: 132.00, 123.00

Total: 194.52, 188.76 (average 191.64)

S/B
SP: 67.06, 61.72

FS: 119.01, 127.92

Total: 186.16, 189.64 (average 187.90)

I/M
SP: 64.06, 64.15

FS: 112.29, 119.65

Total: 176.35, 183.80 (average 180.08)

Given that I/M got these scores making a tremendous amount of mistakes both times, they have the most room to grow. I'd still bet the farm that they will make the olympic team. Their ceiling is higher and the Canadian judges in particular love them.

What I think has happened though is that M-T/M have made a strong case for themselves to be viewed as in the same tier as S/B. The last few nationals, M-T/M have gone in as the clear #4 and I think they've changed this a bit now. As of now, I think it will come down to who skates it best at nationals between M-T/M and S/B.

Absolutely disagree with @honey. I think I/M are more fragile than people would think with regards to being considered a lock for the Olympics and if anything, I would say all three teams behind D/R are now going to be considered equally depending on how they skate in their next events and especially at Canadians. My guess is that I/M will especially not be given a cushion of protection if they continue to fail at landing clean SBS jumps and also keep their dreadful current LP.

As stated above. MTM2 don’t have much room to grow and while they had a good skate and won a medal, it was in a much easier field.
Both I/M and S/B have room to improve as both teams made several errors on their first gps.
MTM2 have certainly improved and making it a real battle at nationals.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful for us fans if they all skate great and put on a real battle.
If that were the case IMHO it will still be D/R, I/M & S/B getting the nod.

Was so genuinely impressed by MTM/M. Thought they skated with much improved confidence across their elements. Appreciated the commentary from CTV during which David P. highlighted the challenge inherent in trying to coordinate the timing of edge jumps, especially in combination or sequence. While the music was fairly non-descript, their skating itself drew me in, in a way that frankly surprised me. There was a comfort (almost lost with that slightly scary moment with the final rotational lift) that allowed for relaxed enjoyment of simply their performance. Kudos.

Well, a busy weekend for us, Livestreaming watchers. Québec sections, Ontario sections and Alberta/NWT/Nunavut sections, all the same week-end. I was able to Watch both QC and Ontario on Daily Motion.

Not many senior pairs.

In QC Ruest/Wolfe did 57/127.70= 184,70
Really nice free program. If they could do a little better in their SP they may be contender for the 2nd spot for the Olympics!!!

In Ontario, good première in senior for Walsh/Michaud 53,9/98.22= 152.12
And Rau/Wilkinson did 42.44/80.76= 123.2

More people in Junior, even if four pairs were "no-show".

In Qc, Matte/Ferland did a good job and showed they are the one to beat if Walsh/Michaud aren't there. 49,8/90,86=140.66
Then Panetta/Lapointe justified their JGP assignment with a 44.32/86,84= 130.16
Levesque/Hudon tried hard, but had many falls on jumps and throws for a 39.08/73.52=112.6
While the Frantz finished last, with a clean SP and so-so free, but more with Novice-level difficulties. 35.62/60.3=95.94

In Ontario, McCaw/Adcock took the lead in the SP, but finished third in the free. But the top 3 were close in both programs.
46.3/74.98=121.28
Andrew and Knott did really well in the free (first), finishing second overall with 42.38/78.28=120.66
And the Boys-Eddy were second in both programs, but third overall with 44.64/75.14= 119.78
Mancini/Reekie 36.5/71.84=108.34
Schumacher/Daleman are making progress but are still doing Novice-level pairs element 36.2/63.62=99.82. They may be ready for next year.

And, to be honest, after watching all of them, I think the judging from Québec and Ontario were fair and comparable between both régions, which is not supposed to always be the case.

Let me take a break before I come back with the Novice pairs.

Novice pairs in the Québec sections, Ontario sections and Alberta/NWT/Nunavut sections.

Two from Alberta. I didn't saw them.
Sophia O'Brien‐Doerksen / Josh Venema 34.32/63.82= 98.14
14 points better than their previous event. Josh was N3 last year.

Asha Gumpinger / Josh Brauner are a new pair. 24.42/46.16=70.58

In Québec, there was a battle for the first step of the podium.
Pouliot/Simard took the lead in the short and... kept it. 36,59/67,46=104.07, the second best score yet this year in Novice.
Perreault/Pierro 36.48/66.40=102.88
Senses/Andjorin did their fist event together. 24.79/52.01=76.80
Good potential but starting their season a little late (health probmels), they will probably not be able to reach the leaders.
Bergeron/Labelle did an OK SP but had problems in their free 22.98/39.04=62.02. It was also their first event of the year.
Turbide/St-Louis WD.

There was also an interesting battle in Ontario for the gold medal.
McIntosh/Toste (2017 PN1) completely missed an element in their short, putting them in second place, which is unusual for them 34.17/63.98=98.15
Ripley/Brawley took a slight lead in the short but got a catastrophic free program. 34.42/44.17=78.59
And Pereira/Robart-Morgan got 27.12/45.21=72.33

So keeping the best scores of each skaters, we will have some great competition in Pierrefonds, then at National.
McIntosh/Toste ON 111.66
Pouliot/Simard QC 104.07
Perreault/Pierro QC 102.88
O'Brien‐Doerksen / Venema AL 98.14
Ripley/Brawley ON 94.07
All of these skaters got the potential to finish first.

Then you will have
Turbide/St-Louis QC 85.47
Swanson / Eberl SK 78.30
Senses/Andjorin QC 76.80
Pereira/Robart-Morgan ON 72.33 (or 75.41 US score in Detroit)
Gumpinger / Brauner AL 70.58
Bergeron/Labelle QC 62.02

All these are only stats, and we will see how they will compare face to face with the same judges in the future events. But I would say the ranking will be mostly respected unless something really bad happened. Maybe Senses/Andjorin could move 1 rank up...

Worthing a mention, the 2 best prenovice in Québec got great scores. Maybe a little too high, caused by the fact the level of the others pre-novice were really low.
Audelin-Dubé/Éthier got 34.1/54.77=88.27
Fournier/Farand 28.9/49.58=78.48
Expect them to be first and second at the Challenge. I'm sure about that. They could have been competitive with the second group of Novice.

And Rau/Wilkinson did 42.44/80.76= 123.2

In Ontario, McCaw/Adcock took the lead in the SP, but finished third in the free. But the top 3 were close in both programs.
46.3/74.98=121.28

Does anyone know about the release status' of Wilkinson (RSA) and Adcock (GBR)?
IIRC Adcock is too old for Jr Int'l already.

MT/M are definitely benefiting from being Richard Gauthier's number one team.

This! And I think M-T/M have been improving at quite a rapid pace all along. But clearly more dedicated attention never hurts. The fact that M-T/M kept their fp from last season has given them a chance to explore it in more depth and bring out the nuances. They had a very good start to the season at one of the Canadian challenger events. I really enjoyed their fp when I saw it before the start of the season. I actually thought I was looking at a new program from them. :) They are very much improved. There are still some obvious weaknesses in their skating and in Michael's partnering, but as a team they are coming together very well in terms of trusting each other and having a great deal of confidence in their programs and in their abilities. Sometimes that's everything.

I would say that Luba/Dylan still have the better overall quality, but that tends to go by the wayside when they don't perform well. I happen to love Sequin/Bilodeau -- they have such a light, deft, magical quality about them and a palpable connection on and off the ice. Their momentum was obviously hampered by injuries over the past couple of seasons, and by a poor sp choice last season. With 3 other strong Canadian teams being in front of the international judges, it makes it more difficult for S/B to build back up their stature and recognition competitively. However, I still feel that S/B have two of my favorite pairs programs this season. It seems that some fans don't agree with their music. I like their music choices a lot.

I also truly enjoy M-T/M's fp music & choreo. D/R have some interesting choices that are working for them after a couple of hiccoughs at the start of this season. If D/R can continue to maintain the focus and confidence they put out in the fp at Skate Canada, they will be in the mix for the international podiums. Apparently, Sui/Han are going to be very difficult to beat for the top spot though, unless perhaps Sui continues to have problems landing her sbs 3-salchow. Still judges and fans love S/H, and their coaches and mentors Shen/Zhao have obviously anointed them/ put their stamp on them.

Back to Canadian pairs: All 3 of S/B, I/M, and M-T/M have weaknesses. M-T/M have made the most noticeable progress this season though and cannot be counted out. That was definitely a coup for them to cop a medal at CoC. It was not a big field, nor the most difficult, but with the two top Chinese teams and two Italian teams there, it certainly was not a slam dunk for them to make the podium either, and they did. Since D/R and I/M are retiring after this season, Canadian pairs are going to still be in wonderful hands with the likes of M-T/M, S/B, and R/W. Indeed!

Did Marvaldi/Villanueve compete, and if so, how did they do?
No, they didn't compete at Quebec Sectionals. I assume they have advanced directly to SC Challenge (Nov. 29-Dec. 3 in Pierrefonds) and will compete there for a spot to Nationals.

I am a little bit confused. They were a us team but have switched to Canada. Have they ever competed as a cdn team before? If not how to they advance to Challenge without competing at sectionals?

Last year only 7 Junior pairs competed at Challenge and 5 at Canadians. Is 12 the maximum number of pairs qualifying for Nationals at the Pre-Novice to Senior levels? This was the list of known Junior pairs before Sectionals:
I went back and looked at who has skated or will skate juniors this fall and came up with this list; I put the top JGP score of those that skated internationally and bolded the ones that can't skate on the JGP in 2018. And I left off Walsh/Michaud since they are skating seniors the rest of the year (well except for jr worlds).

Patricia Andrew / Paxton Knott
Olivia Boys-Eddy/ Mackenzie Boys-Eddy; 123.42
Justine Brasseur /Mark Bardei
Chloe Choinard / Mathieu Ostiguy; 121.27
Allison Eby / Matthew den Boer

Katherina Frantz / Nicolas Frantz
Gabrielle Levesque / Pier-Alexandre Hudon; 110.46
Isabella Mancini / Christian Reekie
Gabriella Marvaldi / Daniel Villeneuve
Lori-Ann Matte / Thierry Ferland; 123.88
Mariah McCaw / Steven Adcock
Chloe Panetta / Steven Lapointe; 123.30

Alison Schumacher / Zachary Daleman

So it will be interesting to see how the teams do in the upcoming sectional competitions in a few weeks.

The top 8 teams at Quebec sectionals ( not including those with byes to challenge or above ) go to challenge. I believe there are not even 8 non-byed teams so all teams go provided they achieved a minimum TES in the free skate ( can use the free skate from any level from any competition) within the last 3 years.

(GP score then Sr. B score)

M-T/M
SP: 62.52, 65.76

FS: 132.00, 123.00

Total: 194.52, 188.76 (average 191.64)

S/B
SP: 67.06, 61.72

FS: 119.01, 127.92

Total: 186.16, 189.64 (average 187.90)

SP: 64.06, 64.15

FS: 112.29, 119.65

Total: 176.35, 183.80 (average 180.08)

Updating these scores to add S/Bs second GP. M-T/M still have the highest total score, by a whisker.

Dylan and Lubov were much stronger in France than their previous two outings. They're still the lowest scoring of the 3 teams in the running for the remaining 2 olympics spots, but I still think they'll be on the team. They look to be building and they are very likely to have a bigger PCS buffer at nationals than the other two teams.

I'm very much looking forward to nationals as I'm a fan of all 3 of these teams and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
