Canadian Pairs 2017/2018 Season News and Updates

Then it was camp that I saw it, yeah. I was trying to figure out how I attended both camp and Thornhill but only saw the program once. That's why.

Like I said I love both of them to death but I found both last year's and this year's LP pretty corny. But that doesn't seem to affect their marks, so.....keep going, I guess.

I thought I was the only one who couldn't see the supposed greatness of the Josh Groban program through all the cheese. :P

I didn't like the Josh Groban so much at first, but it definitely grew on me through the season. I don't even remember what Seguin/Bilodeau skated to last season.

The score of any Disney ad. It was that generic. And for a team with an embarrassment of riches in personality and charisma to mine. For shame.

Judges love THEM (what's not to love?). So they could skate to the sound of a cat accidentally backing into a fan and the judges would throw marks at them.

Except last year they consistently scored higher pcs for the long than the short, even when the short was clean.
Clearly the program does matter, and the judges loved the cheese.

Cheese or no, it was a very well constructed program. It was choreographed to the highlights, they sold the hell out of it, and the last minute featured everything they do well.

Fair point. The judges are to leave their personal feelings about the music out. They have to know how to evaluate if the athletes are maximizing their use of the chosen music, regardless of what it is.
The point about 'selling the hell out of it' matters. I try not to generalize, but Russians have a lot they can teach (some) Canadians about this.

Yes! That last lift was amazing!

I can't wait to see At this Moment! :) In their interview, I believe Dylan said this was their best LP yet. :)

It also had a ton of empty stroking to build up speed between elements and not very many interesting or difficult transitions.

S&B's LP last season was to the soundtrack of Cinema Paradiso. Most of it was a very generic sounding vocal piece with Barbra Streisand singing.

Here is Meagan's latest blog post, about Autumn Classic: http://www.lutzofgreens.com/the-autumn-classic/

It sounds like they will stick with the Muse LP (probably), but change the order of the elements back toward their usual layout. (They were trying a new element layout at Classic.)

I love her honesty, I think because she is addressing the mental aspect of this she will be fine. I truly hope they can find the sweet spot for the long as the short program will keep them in the medal mix.

Yes that last lift always just gives me so many feels. I love this team and how they think outside the box when it comes to lifts! I can't wait to see their LP. How many more weeks until we can see it?

Good news! Justine Brasseur is coming back with Mark Bardei in junior pairs. They are registered to Québec Section A.
Also, Samir Andjorin is registered in Novice, but no Partner name yet. I heard it was Minel Senses, but no official news. It's great news since 4 of the 7 expected Novice pairs in Québec were out because of injuries. At least, one will be back. The others? Maybe next year, they missed the qualification event for this season.

Here is the link for the Section A registration, but the list isn't complete since the deadline is not met.

2 pairs to Watch in Pre-novice. Audelin-Dube/Ethier who did a short of 29,5 today at Souvenir Georges Ethier for their first event of the year (Ethier was injured previously) while a new pair also made a noticeable entry, Fournier/Farand who are showing some potential and did a 21,12 in the short today. Not bad but I think they just started practicing together, so maybe a little late for this year.

In Novice pairs today, Perreault / Pierro short (32,92) was not and good as the one at the Québec summer and Pouliot Simard (34,85) took the lead over them and Turbide/ St-Louis (30,71). I expect these 3 pairs + McIntosh/Toste and Ripley/Brawley from Ontario to keep better until the Canadian and gave us a good show.

Thanks! Great to hear that Bardei, who competed with Renata Oganesian for Ukraine, has decided to continue (an article from April linked in the OES News thread had mentioned he was likely retiring: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/oes-news-2017-2018.101536/page-2#post-5114790 ). Bardei turned 21 this past July so this is his final season of ISU Junior age eligibility.

That is good news about Brasseur & Bardei teaming up. I kept seeing Justine in some of her training mates pics online this past summer with a partner but didn't know who it was. Glad to finally have a name.

Edited to add that Marvaldi & Villeneuve are on the Quebec sectional list too in junior pairs. I guess they decided to switch countries.

Good for them as Marvaldi has (of course) both citizenships.

I just checked Villeneuve's birth date and he turns 21 on July 2nd next year so they have one more year of jr eligibility so with pretty much all the junior teams that Canada sent out this fall aging out--Walsh/Michaud, Matte/Ferland, Choinard/Ostiguy, Penetta/Lapointe--its a good time to switch and make a push for one more year on the JGP as Canada will have spots to fill.

Lot of strategy at work. I think the Frantz made the same calcul. That's also the target for the Boy's-Eddy, Andrew/Knott, Lévesque/Hudon and probably all the actual canadian novices who are having scores close to the Junior already. It will be interesting to watch who will emerge from that battle.

D/R looks to have put back int he Side by side Lutz.. I think thats a good move for them. They need those points. Last year i wasn't sure if they took it out because of risk or injury. They really need a rebound year, last year was just all off for them. I'm expecting them to creep close to or on the podium this year if they stay healthy.

It was clearly due to injury? The only time they didn't do the sbs lutz was at worlds when Eric had an injury. It was in the program at every other event. I don't think it was ever a question that it would go back into the program once they were healthy.

They only took it out at Worlds, when Eric was so severely injured they almost withdrew. Up through the GPF, their second jump in the free was the 3T, which was hurting Meagan's foot, so they switched it to the 3S for 4CC, but ended up using both 3S and 3T at Worlds.

There are many reasons to love Dylan and Luba but this is definitely not one of them. I have now decided who I want to come 4th at Nationals.
?? Not sure what about it makes you say that? The music, the choreo, the performance of it? It's not my favourite program of theirs, but I wouldn't wish them a poor finish or want to deny them a trip to the Olympics because of it.

It's like judging a beauty pageant. All are beautiful but you gotta separate them somehow at the end of the day. Does it mean it's bad? Nah. Am I digging the program at this stage of the season? Nah. Do I expect to grow to like it more than any of the other 3 top Canadians? Nah.

Hey if 99 out of 100 peeps (and judges) love it -- as many tend to like anything they do -- that's great. Not feelin it.
