Canadian Men 2017-18 season news & updates

That 3A/3S was beautiful! I can't get over how much his 3A has improved since his switch to Marina's team.

Gorgeous program. It seemed so short. I love when a long program seems to fly by. It wasn't until he was going into his last spin that I realized he was done.

So beautiful :swoon: What a moment he might be able to create with this with a clean skate (which I've long since given up expecting, but it's fun to dream about it). There is such a solidity to his skating, strength in every step, every edge. The speed in that last camel spin was also really great. All around a fantastic choice for him.

Patrick's programs are both VINTAGE Patrick --- if he can just keep them getting better and more confident, he's going to score greatly --- but I'm almost MORE impressed for Stephen Gogolev at Thornhill winning the senior men's FS (if not the comp as a whole) in a difficult field -- but I worry at some point we may have Tracy Wainman 2.0 on our hands with the Canadian fed's pushing of him...

It's such a shame that Canada missed 3 spots for Korea by one placement because I really like what the guys are putting out this year. I look past consistency issues at this point in the season and imagine what the skates could be like come nationals. Through that lens I think Nationals is going to be an awesome competition with some outstanding skates not qualifying. Packaging and content across the board is really strong. Kudos to the boys.

A side note on Gogolev. He had a really bad fall on warmup. I was just looking up as he hit the ice so I'm not sure on what element, but I think it was 3A. Down hard on right side. He hurt arm/wrist and possibly rib area.
The rest of his warmup was really shaky and he skated first. Somehow he had an amazing skate. A lot of the athletes in the audience were standing in response.

I don't know what the future holds for him because he doesn't hit JGP until next fall and the technical landscape is changing quickly. And he has a growth spurt coming. For now, his two programs are outstanding and I hope they keep both for next year, frankly...because people need to see them. His awareness of arms and body position is improving rapidly and he pulled in 160. I believe he's skating senior at nationals. Would be too funny if he finished second, which with all the talent we have I couldn't rule out at this point.

I believe Gogolev had 2 quads in his short at Minto..one in combination...His growth spurt is moving along...He used to be waist high and perfectly tiny....He has shot up & is all legs now...perfect if he takes the whole yr to grow adjust....grow adjust....while he is too young to compete....He is certainly able to think and adjust already...I was impressed how he added a triple triple combination to his short which gave him about 12 points as it was in last half once he missed his first combination....Steady as she goes....by the way they adjusted his score to 163.42 in the long. He took 2nd overall

I believe Orser and his parents & anyone on his team r looking out for him...I read he is limited on how many days he does quads & is limited to length of time on those days....As well he is growing so his ice coverage is really different this year...He is being carefully developed and limited rather than pushed...He is in it for the long haul.

How is Canadian fed pushing him? Age restrictions have kept a lid on that phenomenon since we can't cast aside other accomplished skaters to send a 12 year old to world's (or even Junior worlds for that matter). I don't see any flags but if you do, please share.

Their biggest challenge right now is keeping him motivated I would believe. For the last almost 3 years he has been technically ready for JGP but has nowhere to compete other than Nationals. He could easily make top 5 at any JGP event so it kinda sucks he can't go.

Gogolev has competed twice internationally at the Adv. Novice level, winning 2016 Coupe du Printemps in Luxembourg and 2017 Bavarian Open in Oberstdorf, Germany.

Gogolev skated a cleaner SP at Minto with the same jump layout (4S+3T, 3A & 3Lz), placing 2nd with a score of 76.32: http://www.skateontario.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/17SeniorMenSP1DRO.pdf

Here are Gogolev's programs from the live stream of Thornhill:

FS (163.42, 1st): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2T9j5HUXhA

Roman Sadovsky's 3rd place FS that opens with a high 4S (151.12): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEWwex5DIPg

I haven't come across a video of Nam Nguyen's 2nd place FS (159.16) yet.

Glad to see Twitter user "starryyuzu" has uploaded Patrick Chan's FS video to YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLxpR_ZsJMQ

Same person's fan cam of Patrick's "Dust in the Wind" SP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv3EfmRcDyI

Even though scores are not really important in an early season debut at a small club competition, I was able to procure them from a source at the rink: 96.55 in SP (51.23 TES/46.32 PCS -1) and 174.16 in FS (79.26 TES/94.90 PCS).

Stunning.
One of those things when one is so at ease with one's craft that complexity looks like simplicity because it is filtered to the core of music and movement.

How I hope he has his moment at the Olympics with this.

Yeah it's absolutely beautiful, he could just skate and do footwork sequences for his entire program and it would be amazing. It's such a high quality and all makes so much sense. He might not have his moment with a clean performance at the Olympics (or maybe he will), but I still think he'll create a positive moment with this program nonetheless. :)

ETA that this tweet in Japanese (with video link) identifies Kevin Reynolds' jazzy-with-drums SP music as being from the Whiplash soundtrack by Justin Hurwitz: https://twitter.com/funakuramasu/status/898574805258993664

Excerpts:
I am pursuing a major in international relations at the University of British Columbia, with a minor in Japanese Language and Culture. I have always been interested in politics and foreign affairs, so I feel that this degree is a natural fit for me. I am also happy to have been able to integrate my interest in Japanese into my post-secondary study and degree. Perhaps someday, pursuing a career in foreign affairs could be a possibility.
The short program is set to music from the motion picture Whiplash. It will be ambitious for me in both technical content and presentation. It's about pushing your limits to the maximum, and there is a feeling of anxiousness when starting that gradually transforms into the thrill of performance.
The sacrifices undertaken by the film's main character in order to be among the very best mirror what it takes to be successful in today's competitive skating environment. I want to show this feeling of passion toward one's craft -- in my case, on the ice. I'm having a lot of fun performing this program in training so far, and I hope to eventually show it to its full potential.
The free skate will be based on the theme of war and peace, which I think is relevant with recent developments in the world today. I want to express the transition from a mentality of battle to the discovery of peace, and the realization of the joy it brings. Perhaps this theme is also significant, as this will almost certainly be my final season in competition. I plan to transition away from the fierce battle of competition and move into the tranquility of a more normal life.

I don't think anyone out there can skate like Patrick Chan. Simply amazing.

I completely agree. He takes my breath away the way very few other skaters do, perhaps only Papdakis and Cizeron can compare IMO. Hallelujah is a complete masterpiece for him and really emphasizes his spellbinding quality on the ice. To see him skate this program perfectly at the Olympics would be a dream come true.

Excerpts:

I love Kevin Reynolds so much! His interviews are always very thoughtful and articulate. He seems like a very kind young man.

Quick update from Brian's summer camp, finally got to see Stephen Gogolev, WOW! 12 years old an great skating, he is fast with great flow an he interprets music so well, his triple jumps are great but his spins are exceptional! Also got to see a few up an coming skaters including Grayson Long, looks about ten but his ice presence an artistry in the ice was really good , had some clean doubles an good spins, like Stephen the full package.

I saw Stephen Gogolev at Thornhill, I've watched him before and I know who he is but I wasn't sold on him since he was so young but WOW totally changed my mind after seeing him live. I was unbelievably impressed by him despite him skating alongside men with more international experience.

Well well well...Liam Firus landed a clean quad (but fell on the axel) at the SLC International - but killed his ISU personal best by about 9 points. He's third after the short program with a score of 83.46. That's only two points lower than Kevin Reynold's personal best which is from 2013 worlds. Wow.

Bennet Toman is 10th, scoring 66.96 but I didn't see his program.

:cheer2: That's great news! Liam is a gorgeous skater.
