Canadian Men 2017-18 season news & updates

Well, we were not in need of another Les Mis program; but Roman was in need of a new FS. This does seem likely a better fit for him.

It totally suits Roman. He is a very dramatic and artistic skater with lovely skills. My only problem with him is that he does not seem to fight for it when things start to go wrong. It sometimes looks like...oh well that's it for this competition...better luck next time. I can't wait to see the whole program when it is ready

Why does it feel like Roman has skated to nothing but Les Mis for the past five years? I mean that in both good and bad ways because it suits him but it feels too familiar.

On one hand I say pull out all the stops in an Olympic year but on the other hand I wonder why he's spending the money. Does he have a shot at the second spot? I feel it's a Nam/Kevin/Keegan battle with Nic and Liam working hard to keep their name in the conversation. Drops off hard after that to look for real contenders, methinks.

Liam Firus and Elladj Balde are assigned to Warsaw Cup, November 16-19.

This is really good news for Liam. If this assignment was given as a result of his SLC placement that says to me SC is keeping an open mind about sending him to Korea. It's your body of work over last two years and Liam didn't have much of one last year. A strong showing in Warsaw to go with SLC result and a Nationals podium keeps him in it.

If I were him I'd be skating the Challenge, too. A risk to doing this but consistency can only be his friend.

Roman's non-vocals Les Mis long program (~2013-2014) had like 5-6 different cuts (segued reasonably well considering the many pieces used). Will be interesting to see how many cuts Version 2.0 will have.

I think that Roman looks defeated, scared when he makes a mistake and that fear leads to more mistakes

I hope Nic gets the second spot. He has the elements and the charm to pull off Olympic moments. He just needs to land his jumps like he already did earlier this season.

ITA! I think he would also be a good choice for the LP for the team event.

My guess is the strategy is more long term. His FS wasn’t terrible technically at Finlandia but his PCS were really low. Chances are he gets sent to another challenger event (either Tallinn or Golden Spin) so he’s probably hoping to improve his SB so he has a chance to maybe get GP assignments next year. I think this season the best he can hope for is a trip to 4CCs.

Plus won’t he have to skate at Challenge this year to get to Nationals? That might have also been a concern.

:cheer2:Yay, Nicolas! The highlight of the night for the crowd at SC, I think. He was terrific. Got the crowd like I remember Ryan Bradley used to do when he was on. Just sold that program 100%.

I really loved how much Nic got into character and really sold the program. The sassy head shake after the quad toe/triple toe was a standout moment for me. A skater with tremendous potential.

Ice is slippery so you really never know how things will go but right now I see four contenders (outside of Chan) for the Olympic team (in no particular order):

Liam Firus
Nam Nguyen
Keegan Messing
Nic Nadeau

Nam vs Keegan at NHK next week will be interesting. And how Liam looks in Warsaw the week after that.

kevin is toast. Patrick is on his second or third rework. I hope the next generation is ready to step up, but I don't see anyone who is obviously "the next one" to quote Rod Black (thus cursing the skater to oblivion.)

I hope Messing really takes advantage of this opportunity to skate at NHK. He's been my pick for second spot since Autumn Classic. Beating Nguyen again and putting up a good short and free would do a lot to help his cause.

Reynolds has been so disappointing this year. Honestly he won't even make the final flight for the free at nationals skating like that.

For next quad I'm hopeful that Phan and Orzel will continue to develop. Both have meddled on the JGP and there's a lot to like about their skating.

I think Steven is Jr eligible next season. It will be interesting to see how he fares in Sr this year. He won Minto, won the long at Thornhill. He just hasn't gone up against Ellaje, Kevin and Patrick.

A nice 162 free skate from Kevin Reynolds, which is better than any Canadian man on the Grand Prix thus far. Would be curious to know how successful he actually is with the quad loop in practice.

Bet Skate Canada can't wait any longer for Gogolev to 'come of age' AND for him to stay healthy healthy healthy. A lot goes on when athletes traverse their teens. Fingers crossed for sure.

Joseph Phan nailed his long program at Quebec sectionals with 170.97 points, lamding two quads and a triple axel. Great for him!

I wish I had been able to watch this on the live stream. Wow. Skate Canada really ought to give him a senior international to give him a chance to make the minimum TES for Olympics/4CC.

So I'm catching up on watching Cup of China and hadn't realized until now that Kevin Reynolds had joined the recycled program trend with his SP, which he had used back in 2009-10 and 2010-11. I feel like if he was going to recycle a program, this wouldn't have been my choice - while this was probably the first program he had that made me like him as a skater, I thought Chambermaid Swing that followed was stronger and that overall he is capable of more now. I know Kevin doesn't have a huge fan base here and I come and go on him myself, but it is disappointing to see him not give himself his best shot. Not that it will matter what program he uses if he jumps the way he did in the short at Cup of China. :shuffle:

I feel your pain. I've had a soft spot for him for a number of years and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw his CoC score. He's had a rough last couple of years.

Kevin does not tend to peak early in the season anymore, having had to deal with boot issues and injuries for last several years I think he now smartly understands his time to bring his best skating is AFTER the GP season with all the fed politiking and more in terms of shining as a strongly valued team player, not so much as an individual contending podium star -- that's mainly been Patrick's Job! However, folks should remember Kevin has ALWAYS come through when it really counts by nationals, to make the team, then Olympics to help Canada medal in team event, and later Worlds to help qualify as many men as possible... So I deeply respect Kevin and his past contributions and I still believe he is a top 10 world contender esp., when he is on, healthy and in good boots, and if he turns up his speed, rotates and lands cleanly he could do very well for himself AND for Canada! Yes, COC was craptacular esp in terms of his SP score but as he adjusted to time change, etc., he rebounded somewhat in the free to show his training is on track, and to showcase his potential to score well by time he needs to bring his best -- which is usually much later in the season, and with retirement looming for both Himself and Patrick, as well as Firus and Balde, I am betting subconsciously Kevin's hoping some other young CDN gun on GP circuit is getting ready to really step up and contend and/or qualify future spots by 2018 worlds in Italy.

 He's had years to figure out speed and how to land cleanly. At this point I think what we see is what we get. Quads are his thing and it was enough for awhile, but now there's so many other men either doing quads way better or more quads that it's going to be really hard for him to replicate past success.
