Canadian Men 2017-18 season news & updates

How I hope he has his moment at the Olympics with this.

That would be so sweet, as the Olympic moment has now eluded him at two games. I let expecting it from him in Sochi ruin my enjoyment of the skating in particular and the Games at large - I can get way too invested in my favorites at times.

Hallelujah is a complete masterpiece for him and really emphasizes his spellbinding quality on the ice. To see him skate this program perfectly at the Olympics would be a dream come true.

Yes, and I think it's possible. Patrick really has nothing to lose, and he's not going in as the favorite to win or even medal, though he does have an outside shot at bronze the way things look now. Hopefully the lack of pressure will work well for him.

And I hope the Canadian media goes easy on him. It went nuts in the run-up to Sochi, and I got the feeling Patrick was becoming unravelled before he even got there.

Grand Prix grid was updated and Nadeau is listed for Skate Canada International.

YAY!!!!

Also, happy Liam kept the SP from last season (which I loved) and ditched the suspenders which killed him at Canadians. And that quad was a beauty!!

He reworked his axel entry - it didn't seem quite as hesitant as usual, which is great! But I still hate that jump on his behalf (the axel was my nemesis too. I could never get a consistent double axel, yet could land all my triples).

It really is a masterful program. Liam has also greatly improved his body movement and he is so patient heading into his jumps. The set up for the 3A is also much, much better. I have enjoyed his skating since he was in Juv, but the last couple of years he seems to stagnate and he seemed lost. It is so nice to see him really shine in his last season!

Liam's FS was a PB by about 24 points, and a whopping 37 points for the total. I am so happy that he landed quads in both programs, and a 3A (with good GOE) in the free. After so much frustration across so many events . . . it's too bad he doesn't have another international upcoming to try to consolidate the success.

Warsaw's in a month and it's listed on the international assignments page, so I assume Canada will be sending some skaters. It'd be great if he could go there.

I've always loved his skating. I do think he seemed really slow in the SLC videos. I don't recall him looking that slow in the past - I hope it was either the camera, or his speed will pick up as the season progresses.

I think that was the video. Liam has never been the fastest skater (when compared to other elite men,) but he does have good speed and nice glide. He was a lot more patient heading into his jumps and not between jumps in combinations. He used to rush and then end up with a messy combo or a fall. I think his speed across the ice was fine. I love the way his other movements were so in time with the slower music.

Remember, SLC is at altitude. He looked fried at the end, which is unusual for him as he's usually in shape to do full run throughs. I'm not sure how early he got there and if he had time to adjust. Expect this program to push much harder at sea level.

SC has done a brilliant job at giving just about everybody some exposure and an opportunity to get qualifying scores for the season. Gives the federation maximum options to select Olympic team.
I'm sure Bruno will find somewhere else for Liam to skate because the challenge in December is a long way off.

Bruno and Liam have worked hard on the axel. Krall had him almost leaning back on the entry which was a little bizarre. It was basically good to go last season. The missing ingredient has been belief, as I understand it. I think this is only his second clean axel ever in comp and first in front of international judges. No idea how big of a mental hurdle he just cleared but I'm sure he's exhaling over this and hungry to build on it.

I'm thinking it was the camera panning along at the same speed that made him look slow - I've photographed him as recently as Quebec Summer Skate and I can assure you he's not slow! :)

Yeah, I did find it odd. I saw him live at Skate Canada last year, and he was not Nam-speed like he seemed in the video.

Liam is such a beautiful skater - very much like Patrick Chan in build and skating style. In fact, it would be easy to mistake Chan for him when looking at him doing foot-work from a long shot.

I would like for Liam to skate clean just once (which he may have done, but I don't recall it). How nice if he could do it at Nationals.

Watching Nam compete at the Autumn Classic this weekend - is it just me or does it seem like he has lost his joy for skating? At least, it doesn't come across in his skating like it used to.

But on the plus side, his speed does seem to be improving, and despite errors, his jumps overall look stronger and more secure than they did the past 2 seasons.

Really? I haven't watched his LP yet, but he looked quite happy to me in the SP, and especially thrilled to skate clean.

Although I haven't seen the program, it occurred to me that having to focus on speed and strengthening his jumps might cause Nam to temporarily lose his joy of skating. Everything always came so easy to him and he won everything as he worked his way up the ranks by virtue of his uncanny ability to stay on his feet. Plus, he was always having fun as Nam the Ham, but grew out of that. Now he has to reinvent himself as a skater artistically as well as technically, and it doesn't come so easy anymore. It wouldn't surprise me if that is a struggle, but I wish him well and can't imagine that he'd lose his joy permanently, as skating is such a fundamental part of him.

His Instagram looks like he is enjoying his training. He and Roman post some fun stuff. Looks like they are pushing each other

Looks like Tracey Wainman and Nam have several on-the-fly strategies should the long program not go as originally planned.
That's the good news.

The bad news: if Autumn Classic scores are any indication, it appears Nam may be having to play catch up to Liam, Keegan (and maybe Nic) anywhere from 15-25 points overall in component scores come Nationals if he wants to make the Olympic Team (I suspect some interesting PCS allocations come Nationals).

Liam Firus and Elladj Balde are assigned to Warsaw Cup, November 16-19.

Roman Sadovsky has a new Les Miserables FS program choreographed by Mark Pillay -- clip to "Bring Him Home" (voice is Pillay's): https://www.instagram.com/p/BangfKYnpFV/
