Canadian Ice Dance 2016-17 season news & updates

they did not diminish V&M , this was Canadian panel and just because they did not make gpf I still think they could surprise at worlds a top 5 finish is not out of the question.

I saw the results from Challenge and rolled my eyes. To give a world record score to a team which did not even make the GPF, and which is ranked 8th in this year's Grand Prix Series, is utterly ridiculous.

The Canadian judges are truly stupid. In doing what they did, they diminished the huge achievements that Virtue/Moir have had this season, and for no good purpose as Gilles/Poirier will not be contending for the World Podium this season.

Well, it wasn't an international competition. However, I agree that giving skaters super inflated scores at domestic comps may not be a wise strategy. More realistic scores might do them more good in the long run.

I watched the dance competition and thought there were some beautiful performances fabulous skating however I definitely thought some scores were head scratcher moments when the marks came out. Definitely some head scratchers moments looking at the score sheets afterwards.

I am really baffled why the judges are doing this, what purpose does this really serve? Are the sections pressuring for these strange marks? I would guess some sections have stronger pull than other sections then. Are these low level judges at Challenge just learning how to judge dance competitions? Or is this cheating on the part of the judges to favor certain teams over others regardless of the actual skating performed?

Duplicate post. Sorry. I'm having some connectivity issues and got click happy yikes

I love weaver and poje and I also love Tessa and Scott. I do not understand why Carol Lane has seemed to sacrifice all her teams for one team. I like and respect their improvement but they are not my personal favorites. I also love the fluidity and style of the new team Soucisse and Firus. He sustained a serious injury on the warm up and still went out and skated very well. Bravo!

I did not see the warmup..just tuned in as they were starting the FD...what happened? I have always liked him with all his partners.

Won't let it stop them from tweeting about it, either (sometimes with incorrect information). ;)

Piper Gilles
: Canadian shortdance record 80.04!!Enjoying it while it lasts :p#Challenge17

Piper Gilles: Leaving Montreal with a shortdance and combine total Canadian record, I'd say It was a successful weekend. Thanks Montreal, on to Canadians

Piper Gilles: New Canadian record !! :) https://t.co/IhoNKv9KXA

Carol Lane: New Canadian records in SD & FD at Challenge for @PiperGilles @PaulDPoirier , what a great weekend in Montreal #stickwiththeplan

I agree with those who think this approach to scoring does no one any favors. And makes Skate Canada look ridiculous on the heels of a team like Virtue/Moir setting world records a week earlier with SD and total scores lower than this.

poor weaver and poje will only end up as bronze medallists this year at nationals their career as a top flight team is basically over.

I find the tweeting to be obnoxious, to be honest. I get they are excited about breaking the record and kudos to them, but it was a home competition with inflated scores. Have some perspective.

You literally just predicted in March that Weaver/Poje would win Worlds last season.

Life comes at you fast, eh?

well I am just stating the facts, I am disappointed with Weapo's fd this year a huge step backwards , I thought on the nature of daylight was a masterpiece they really blew away their season at 4cc last year oh and judy Bloomberg didn't help either.

They have lots of perspective...all the tweeting they and Carol Lane are doing is part of their dirty politiking. Another part of that is Carol's biased commentary on CBC tv. There are some coaches who can be objective...she is not one of them. Now that those idiot scores have been posted how are they going to give honest scores at nationals. If they did they would look like even bigger idiots.

I did not see the warmup..just tuned in as they were starting the FD...what happened? I have always liked him with all his partners.

There was a collision between him and another team (forget who at the moment), he sat on the ice for a good 30sec before getting up.

On camera we could see all the coaches yell "watch" but did not know what happened since the camera was stationary during the warm up. Wow poor Shane. Well whatever his injury he came out and skated very well during his program.

I heard that during the morning practice that there were some exceptionally close calls with teams almost colliding during spins and lifts.

Agreed. This is why certain skaters don't bother looking at the final score. All the OTT tweeting annoys me to no end. Have some class; personally I would be embarrassed calling myself a CR holder knowing full well it was via over inflated scoring.

If all the scores at Nationals are inflated, then all of the top skaters are eligible for overinflation. She's not comparing the scores to GPF.

Whether something is a National record is a fact.

PG has always been overkill! Especially the first 3 seasons when she was being dragged around the ice.

Yes, it feels like we are back to the beginning again, like when G/P came onto the scene as a new team, with an overbearing and entitled attitude, and whole lot of fanfare and press to "make it happen". There is no sense of humility with this team.

G/P have a very entertaining SD. It's a lot of fun to watch. Their FD is the best one they've done so far. But in no way do they deserve anywhere near the scores of V/M. They do not have deep, matching edges, quality lines, expert control and variety of movement, seamless "skating as one", skating close together, insane difficulty. No smooth flow and effortless skating. It's better than it used to be, as demonstrated by the FD which is refreshingly short of gimmicks, but not on the same level as V/M or W/P in Canada, or the Shibs, P/C, or C/L. I'd put G/P solidly in the 7 to 10 spots globally, given what I've seen so far. Entertaining does not equal competitive quality. This team has consistently used humour and fun and lots of gimmicks to hide their weaknesses. It's entertaining, and clearly this weekend it succeeded in mesmerizing the judges. The scores are absolutely ridiculous, and an insult to the integrity of the sport and the rest of the Canadian senior dance teams.

This sport is at risk of losing its status as a sport. Fewer kids are getting involved, and less are sticking around to the higher levels. We already saw a whole lot of good teams retire this season. Skate Canada needs to make sure that there is integrity and honesty in the judging from top to bottom - competent judges and technical specialists who apply the rules of the sport fairly and evenly. The more we see ridiculous scoring like this weekend, the more the integrity of the sport is damaged. No one is fooling anyone. Elite skaters - and even a lot of younger ones - who are students of the sport, know exactly what the scores should be, based on what was skated on the day.

I didn't see V/M or W/P at Challenges.

It seems to me that the judges are simply preparing for V/M to break the scoreboard at Nationals. Hence "While it lasts."
