Canadian Ice Dance 2016-17 season news & updates

Nothing prepared me for what we saw at 2016 Worlds, so in terms of just looking at raw numbers, anything goes. As long as they're proportional to the other competitors in that competition, then I guess no harm no foul.

PCS are irrelevant the tech panel decides the outcome of every ice dance event the judges have become non factors.

PCS is becoming quite relevant as most of the top teams are getting their levels. True, we're not seeing level 4s straight across like the Shibs started getting last year but very close....and will only get better.

So unless the ISU invents level 5 and 6 elements that almost no one can do (e.g. doing level 4 elements in a compressed time frame that requires excessive speed) PCS will become more and more important

You can't win on level calls alone, but you can certainly lose a competition based on level calls. PCS and GOE definitely determine results when it's a well-skated competition and multiple teams are receiving level 4s across the board as what happened at 2016 Worlds. You can't look at the scores P/C received and what everyone else received without accounting for PCS and GOE.

V/M. Wow. Effortless and they both skate bigger and with better technique than in the past.

A minor thing that distracted me was Scott's almost constant bent arms in the first cut of music. That in itself isn't terrible but I didn't see enough purposeful/precise movement from his arms in that stretch, bent or straight. That's quite possibly useless feedback but something I noticed right off the bat.

And I wonder if the long deep edges creates a missed opportunity in the TR mark. The program is very difficult but doesn't look busy in the least...which shouldn't be a bad thing. Just wondering out loud...

Wow. fournier beaudry sorensen Are ahead of Hawayek and baker... what was the ranking of the teams last year? Either way, I'm loving the Danish team since their " women" free dance

They were in the same ballpark.

Fournier-Beaudry Sorensen finished third at Finlandia. Hawayek & Baker finished 4th with a fall. H&B were fourth at Skate America (weak field) and finished above Testa & Csolley during the short at Cup of China, but then had to withdraw due to illness. The Danes were seventh at SC (deep field) and really had a nightmare of a comp there--blood was involved. H&B skated well at Nationals, but lost by a hair to Cannuscio & McManus. The Danes, obviously, had no competition at home and made the post season where they finished 9th at Europeans--not so hot--and 13th at Worlds, one spot above Testa & Csolley after finishing below them in the SD. So . . . same ballpark. And F-B&S and H&B just split placements at Autumn Classic with Hawayek & Baker coming out @10 points ahead of F-B&S in the FD after F-B&S blew the twizzles. (This happens quite often in competition, unfortunately).

Thank you Dobrepedia :D

Great synopsis

Thanks for posting the link! It's good to see that Skate Canada is having different skaters write blogs for their website this season (I've posted the other links in the Canadian Men's and Pairs threads earlier today).
Excerpt:
Our coach Carol, Piper and I completed our day by meeting the ISU committee to clarify details on our pattern dance (which is slowly coming along, name still TBD).

can they take pressure? check...in 5th place in that field and 6 pts more than their first outing...Marjorie and Zachary are in 3rd with having the disadvantage of skating 2nd of 14 couples. Won't say more ..afraid of the forum police.

Alicia and Claudio looked really slow in the SD, but they hit levels a lot of other teams didn't.
yep..TES high..couldn't make the final anyways but hopefully will be sent a few places. This will be a big confidence boost leading up to nationals How many places do we have for junior worlds.

Top JGP Canadian FD Scores:

L&L: 82.35, 80.12
W&G: 75.88, 74.70
F&P: 78.91, 70.81
W&M: 75.57
S&R: 73.62, 72.70

Adding a note that the FD scores (not the SD ones) from Mordovia are running about an average of 5 points higher for every team in the final flight at that event relative to the same teams' other score.

And top JGP Canadian total scores:

Lajoie Lagha: 139.67, 137,14
Fabbri Pietrantonio: 127.89, 126.16
Withley Graham: 126.27, 125.38
Stairs Royer: 124.14, 119.59
Wu Mirzakhani: 122.06

Only 2 open spots for junior worlds this season, hopefully we will get 3 next year!

A minimum of three U.S., three Russian (more, but only three will compete), and one French junior team have the difficulty, experience, and reputation to defeat the top current Canadian junior team. Plus a possible Czech team, though L&L have a good shot against Kuzmich & Sinicyn. Of course, teams can make mistakes; but I would rather see a strong Junior Worlds competition and see Canadian junior dance rebuild by gaining experience & quality. Next season, four of the top international junior teams will age up and things will be more open on the JGP. (Though I think Carreira & Ponomarenko, Shpilevaya & Smirnov, and Skoptcova & Aleshin are priming themselves for that battle).

I agree, Sorry I did not express myself properly, I meant that based on the current standings, we should earn two spots again this season for Junior Worlds 2018, but hopefully, since it will be a more open field next season, we could potentially gain 3 spots for Junior Worlds 2019, considering the age of our top teams.

Speaking along those lines it is just as important to think about JGP slots as JW spots. It is more important IMO to jump from 7 to 14 JGP spots than even 2 to 3 JW spots ( though that is nice too ).

I think we will finish 4th or 5th this year ( US , RUS and FRA ahead of us for sure while we are in a battle with the Czechs for the 4th and 5th slots )

That means 7 JGP slots guaranteed with a chance to get extra slots from teams that don't fill theirs. That realistically means about 9 - 11 JGP slots depending on JW results of other countries.

With the top French team aging out after this season, we have an excellent chance at JW 2018 to finish in the top 3 countries. That would mean the maximum 14 JGP slots.

For those with Kiss & Cry access, the 2016 Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships practice groups list was posted today and, from it, I've compiled the entries by level here:http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/ind...-international-july-27-30.98893/#post-4829304
Competition dates are July 27-30.

Canadian teams are copied out below (I assume the Senior/Junior international entry list is not yet published):

SENIOR
Alexa Linden / Addison Voldeng S12
Vanessa Chartrand / Alexander Seidel (new)
Carolane Soucisse / Shane Firus (new)
Aya Takai / Dominic Barthe (new)
Aurelija Ippolito (GER last season) / Malcolm Jones (CAN & DEN in the past) - not sure what country they will represent

Ippolito & Jones are representing Latvia this year. Aurelija & Malcom train at PSCHS out in Ardmore, PA.

LOVED Gilles/Poirier's FD. I thought they captured the tango flair rather well. And had a lot of difficult foot placements (steps between each other's legs, etc). Also loved V/M's FD. It just captured me. Definitely some bobbles and some work needed, but beautiful dance.

Comparing them to Chock/Bates - I found C/B skate in straight lines, very noticeable when there live. They don't use much curves as they skates. To be fair, though, I've always found them very overmarked.
