Ashley Wagner Cheer Thread #3: The Subject of Tonight's Lecture...

Well, GOOD. I remember in 2010 she specifically declined to even be a TBA. . . and then didn't make the Olympic team, so. . .

Finger pointing begins:
Who's to blame for Wagner's failure in San Jose?
Skater hints at unfair judging; Others suggest fault lies with skater herself

http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2018/01/06/264361486

"They still got the results right in my opinion (but with wrong numbers beside components)," longtime skating TV commentator Sandra Bezic wrote in a text message.

"Ashley's (free skate) program was truly lovely and nuanced, but it got overshadowed. She did herself a disservice by not using it all season. That also made her seem complacent.

"But she is to blame for not making the team. She underestimated how hungry the other women were. The right team is going to the Olympics."

Scott Hamilton had a similar view.

"Ashley has been in three Olympic cycles, and she has been vulnerable in the team selection process each time because she didn't skate her best at nationals," Hamilton said.

Wagner made an 11th-hour attempt to create a fresh image of herself by ditching the shopworn free skate to Moulin Rouge! she had used in three different seasons for the program to La La Land she originally planned to use this season.

The La La Land choreography was new and attractive, but she performed the same 12 elements in virtually the same order (the step sequence was in a different place) as she had in the Moulin Rouge! program. It is as if an actor were playing Hamlet with the stage direction for King Lear.

Now my comments: Well at least Ash came with one new program. Karen came with 100% repeats...I mean if thats your argument Scott (NEVER my favorite) kinda is a hypocrite.

My feelings are usfsa started becoming luke-warm to Ash, and that sped up once she withdrew from home turf SkAm in the middle of the free skate.

I will say I do feel USFSA helped Ash in assisting her get the 2 GP assignments she wanted tho.

Without commenting on the judging, I will just say that duh, everyone should know Scott Hamilton is a hypocrite with low character. He is the ultimate insider, and whatever has been decided behind closed doors (fairly or unfairly), it's his job to disseminate the party line to the TV masses.

There'll be 3 Canadian ladies at the Olympics, not 1 (Katelyn and Gabby came 2 and 3 at Worlds)

Well yes ... but judging from how this season plays out it's only Kaetlyn that looks like a factor so no wonder why people talk only about 1 Canadian lady even though there will be 3 of them at the Olympics. I have some hope left in Daleman though. Unfortunately I see no such hope for Alaine Chartrand.

So will Ashley *not* get a chance at 4CCs? It would be awesome if she could go there, kick butt, pick up a nice paycheck, and improve her world standing for next season. . .

Unfortunately I think that this is the last season for Ashley Wagner.

Christine Brennan has written mostly positively about Ashley through the years... here's her column yesterday (Jan. 6) on why she thinks Ashley did not make the Olympic team this time around: https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...hley-wagner-not-going-pyeongchang/1010584001/
She ends this way:
For the past four years, since she was placed on the 2014 Olympic team for her body of work, Wagner has been a lightning rod for controversy, especially on social media. She also has been one of the most fascinating and accessible athletes those of us on the Olympic beat have ever been privileged to cover. Here’s hoping we haven’t seen the last of her.

Good article. I agree that Bradie's PCS were inflated and that the judges were sending a msg to the international judges about who their "chosen" one was. However, I don't see how is she relevant when it comes to Ashley. She was out of reach for Ashley, based only on the Tech. You can make that argument with Chen but not Bradie vs Wagner. I think the US judges made a strategic mistake here cause Wagner still has some credit at international level. So, in a good day she would def. beat a good Chen. And maybe even Mirai with a 3A, in PCS.

It is good that she is defending Wagner. However, I think calling the Russian skaters "jumping beans" is becoming really tiresome and annoying. I find that to be a very superficial view, and offensive too. These girls are not all the same, and they certainly are not just "jumping beans". They are different from one another and they train as hard as anybody else. Every single day. Sacrificing a lot of things, they and their families. There is no need to downplay a person in order to uplift another one. And no, it isn't true that Ashley brings "the total package" which isn't rewarded anymore. She has great maturity and performance. She doesn't have the technique though. That's not what is called a "total package". Kwan was the definition of the total package, Yuna Kim, Mao, just to name a few. Kostner is still now, what you would call the "total package", and she has been (stilll is) rewarded by the judges (sometimes even overscored).

They also overlook the fact that Mirai had no coach at the time. The committee was not going to send a coach-less skater to the Olympics.
The fact Mirai did not have a USFSA approved coach really diminished her chances of going to the Olympics even though she LEGITIMATELY finished third at Nationals in 2014. There was really nobody to defend her position. I was really nervous for Karen Chen after the free skate. I was sure USFSA was going to pull the same BS on her. Miss Chen was very smart in having a "USFSA approved" coach AND made it clear that Kristi Yamaguchi is her mentor.

Soooo in a cheer thread, you’re not allowed to comment honestly if it’s not positive. Right? Just making sure i understand the rules

I'm not an Admin. here, but I just noticed that Christine Brennan's Ashley column (that I linked above) also was posted in the U.S. Ladies news/discussion thread in GSD which probably is a better place to "comment honestly" on the U.S. Olympic ladies team selection vs. Ashley's non-selection: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...l-make-you-a-star.102437/page-29#post-5238186

How is Ashley going to compete 4 Continents without her coach??? I guarantee Raf is not going to fly to Asia and back while he needs to be preparing his two skaters for the Olympics. I would love to see her there though!

I’m in the Ashley’s PCS score wuzrobbed camp, relative to the other top ladies at Nationals. I’m gutted for her. :( So glad I was there to see her La La Land live...it was devine, as is her skating. So mature and lovely. Takes her time and throws no movements away. No one else in the top ladies in the US presents like that. Always the most gorgeous dresses. I am so bummed she won’t be in South Korea with Adam. Those two would have been great television.

I would think trying a new program at nationals was anything BUT complacent.
My thoughts - she wasn't being complacent. She was the poster girl - in most all the ads for the Olympics - maybe that took too much time, was a distraction, made her more nervous about living up to the expectations. But, even as accomplished a skater as she is, it might have been better to put La La Land out there in the international competitions of the Grand Prix, and use those to keep polishing the program? And working harder on the jumps she tends to underrotate, which she did at Nationals and therefore lost points? Plus the level 3 spin? Seems she was a bit short-sighted, or nerves got the best of her early in the season so she went back to what she was comfortable with rather than pushing herself with a new program - which the judges are more likely to expect from a skater with her years of experience. They might overlook program repeats with a younger skater like Chen.

Ashley should go to PC as some sort of Olympic correspondent for NBC or whatever, and then move on to Dancing with the Stars.

SO TRUE! Now all of a sudden they bestow upon her her worst PCS scores.. Its still too much secrecy..WHy? Tell me... show me where her choreo and interpretation were the same as Bradie. Show me how Karen interpreted that Tango even better than LAST YEAR????? child please....

Even Johnny said... in mens.. was it Brown SP? where he clearly had a UR but judges ignored it.. And Johnny said "well if they are gonna assign URs then it needs to be across the boards. This is another example why skating is losing its fan base."

Id love to be shown how Ashleys Interpretation and choreo and transitions were weaker than last year and weaker than Karen, and TIED with Bradie.... show me...so I can learn this sport ... and want to be its fan.......

I felt Ashley's LaLaLand dream (and I despise this movie). Did I feel Karen's tango? Well, kinda... a bit...

But Ashley transported me to this whimsical dream right from her beginning pose.

Ashley is flying to NY to be on the Today Show tomorrow. I hope this doesn’t mean she’s WD from 4CC.

Sponsors Sticking By Ashley Wagner After She Fails To Make U.S. Figure Skating Team
http://m.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Da...Marketing-and-Sponsorship/Ashley-Wagner.aspx?
Ashley Wagner's agent and sponsors promise her endorsements are safe after she failed to make the U.S. figure skating team for Pyeongchang following a fourth-place finish at the U.S. nationals on Friday. Wagner, who won a Bronze Medal at the '14 Sochi Games as part of the team competition, is among the most commercially active Olympians in years to miss the team, as she has seven sponsors and a place in NBC's promotional campaign. She has deals with Bridgestone, Dick's Sporting Goods, Nike, Procter & Gamble, Samsung, Toyota and Zico coconut water, according to CAA's Lowell Taub, who reps Wagner. Financial terms of Wagner's deals are not public, but Olympic endorsements almost always include incentive payments for making the team and medaling. Several sponsors noted that Wagner's medal from Sochi gives her value to marketers more permanence, regardless of this year's disappointment. "She is still and will always be an Olympian who has been on the Olympic podium," said Bridgestone Americas VP/Sports & Event Marketing & Training Phil Pacsi. "That is something that should be celebrated, and we have many plans to do just that.” Bridgestone will not pull any current television ads or other creative involving Wagner. Toyota's marketing plans also will not change because of the news, Toyota Marketing Communications Manager Leigh Anne Sessions said. "She has a long and successful history in the Olympics and we selected her to be part of Team Toyota because we believe in her," Sessions said.
