Adam's twitter feed has been advocating for gay rights for several years. Stop deflecting with the torture of Muslim gays, because it doesn't make lesser abuses by Putin and Pence any more acceptable. I seriously think that Putin & Trump supporters have serious mental deficiencies which result in unbridled tribalism and fear of the "other."

This is Adam's thread, not Clinton's, but she has grown in her thinking and fully supports equal marriage. Many Americans opinions have changed over the years. If Pence had evolved to do the same his past comments would likely not be held against him.

Not only that, but marriage is far from the only issue affecting LGBTQ individuals and we all know which Presidential candidate would have been much more progressive on that front especially after the crap this administration tried to pull in rolling back LGBTQ rights in the past year.

I would think he does know who Adam is and knows what he said. Olympic athletes are high profile, and Adam's statement was strong enough to get some attention.
And of course, his idiot boss watches TV 24/7 and is always on the look-out for real or imagined slights. Slights to his VP might flicker across his mind in one of the many few-second periods that constitute his attention spans.
Anyone can stand in the middle of the street and yell "I will never visit Queen Elizabeth in her palace"..... but first one has to be invited....
I think it's quite common for Olympic teams to be invited to meet their government in its institution of practice.

It's so weird how straight people think it's a "political" issue, when you don't want to hang out with someone who hates the fact you exist. Like it's something you can separate from yourself, and your life, and should suck up, for... what, exactly, in return?
To go back to another discussion, it's also weird to me how people seem to think of being "out" as some sort of one-time international registration that you send off a form to, and recieve your gay card, and forehead brand so everyone knows forever after. I'm sure there are tons of athletes from loads of countries (where it's safe to be out), who are out to their friends and family, but no one from the media cares enough to ask, or people didn't read where they said it, etc. To add to the list of European guys, Alexander Majorov has mentioned being gay in interviews (though of course he doesn't get to go to Olympics this year, ghh)

When Dutch speed skater Ireen Wust won her Olympic medals, the press didn't focus on her sexuality at all. Same with Swedish alpine skier Anja Paerson. Wonder if there is some differences b/t women vs. men in this regard.

i do not understand why the press is always referring to Adam as the first openly gay olympic athlete. two speed skaters, Blake Skellerup and Keith Carney were both "out" at the sochi olympics and there is another athlete , a canadian Anastasia Boucsis that has been out long before Adam. maybe more.... i am not sure.The media has had a field day with Adam being the first out gay athlete to compete at the Olympics. I'm sure he'll get all the gay-related questions now.

There likely is difference in men and women. Generally LGBTQ women in the Olympics either don't get mentioned as being so or are mentioned just in passing. From my time at a very conservative college, I would surmise to say that's because (a hopefully small subset) some men think of lesbians as desirable, as if they exist for their fantasies, but being a gay man is disgusting.
It is also probably a societal thing. The US is completely hung up on this, whereas the Dutch and Swedish probably aren't- or maybe they are for men? I don't really know. But because the US has such a religious culture, there are so many people, many in our government, who think being gay is WRONG.
Also, in general, gender non-conforming women are accepted in US society, when gender non-conforming men are less so. We hear a lot about where trans-women should be going the bathroom. No one seems to care about the trans-men (mostly in that they don't think about it. Probably the same people would think that is "icky"). We hear tons about how little girls can play with trucks, and should be outdoorsy and rough and that's awesome and great; little boys are rarely encouraged to play with Barbies or have dance parties in tutus.
People, even in this thread, boil this issue down to who you have sex with. It's not. It's about not having to hide who you are. Everyone I work with knows I'm straight. I have photos of my husband at my desk. Until a few years ago, gay coworkers likely didn't feel comfortable doing the same. Growing up, Adam felt he had to hide who he was. He wants to be a role model for little boys hoping they don't do the same thing. I know a skater who was not out when I knew him. When he came out, his mother blamed a gay coach for making her son gay. He and the coach never had any sort of relationship, it was just that the coach was out and secure in who he was. My understanding is the mother has since come around and supports her son; but people still have to deal with this. So coming out is a big deal. Maybe some day it won't be, because it will just be a norm, so no one needs to know it is OK to go public. But for now, there are children, and adults, who do need that.

No Pence is denying that Adam has a problem with Pence's anti-gay leanings and wants nothing to do with him. Hes says that is "Fake News" and he wishes Adam the best in his competition.
Bucsis is the only one of the three that was out while competing at the Olympics (she did that in Sochi).
Skjellerup came out shortly after he competed in short track in Vancouver in 2010, but did not qualify in 2014. He will be competing in Pyeongchang.
Carney did compete at the U.S. Speed Skating Trials in 2006 and 2010, but never officially qualified for an Olympic team.
