Abandoned buildings

This is a little eerie, a little odd, but how many of us can't resist the curiosity? Not to actually go inside such buildings, but at least to look into these video/visual accounts of factories, apartments, mansions, etc., that have been abandoned, left to rot, and the local governments have not sought to tear them down at least as a safety hazard? There is some common law item where, if a house/building has been abandoned for three/five? years, and no one has claimed ownership, the city has a right to take ownership of it, and dispose of it as they seem fit. Several years ago, I was walking down 12th Ave on my way to work, and there was this long boarded up house I had seen for a few years. That one day, I could see smoke coming out of a boarded up window, so I flagged down a city bus (this was before the era of cellphones), and asked the driver to call the fire department. I continued on my way, and out of the corner of my eye, saw two derelicts prying their was out of the front door. If they hadn't gotten out in time........

Here is what spiked my interest: https://www.facebook.com/steveroninofficial

This reminds me… Growing up there was this abandoned derelict house in the middle of what was otherwise an extremely wealthy neighborhood. I remember going there with my brothers as kids to explore but I was too scared to go in so I waited outside. I remember it so well because I found it so odd to have such an eyesore in the middle of these giant homes with neatly manicured lawns. I was never told the story behind it.

we had one of those, I used to read in it because it was so quiet. it became a shopping center.

Chernobyl is one of the most eerily beautiful places I’ve ever been. It’s as if the earth is slowly reclaiming what humans took from it. I had the feeling of being back on earth 30+ years after humanity had been wiped out.

I had fun exploring abandoned buildings in Beirut too (safely, with a guide).

There is a certain level of beauty to many abandoned buildings. I have a few photographer friends who travel around the world going to abandoned buildings. No crazier than travelling to skating competitions, I guess
