A Divine Sport blog

Thanks Spun! I hope I didn't gush too much. :-) But I really did enjoy it! I've been to Stars 4 or 5 times in the past--although it's been awhile--but for some reason, I think I enjoyed this show more than past editions. I do think Jeff Buttle's choreography makes a big difference.

I just read your post. Thanks a lot. I would not worry about those double jumps from Evan. Evan did 3Lz and 3F successfully at Medal Winners Open last January. Since he is working at the real estate industry, he may not be doing full time training.

I enjoyed reading your season wrap-up and your thoughtful comments re your top pairs picks. Thanks also for sharing your picks for best pairs costumes.

Interesting news, quotes and photographs in your Colonial FSC 2015 show summary. Amazing that you are raising twins and still find time to put together such an informative and insightful blog about pairs. Thanks!

ETA: You have twins and you love pairs. What a cool coincidence. :)

Thanks @clairecloutier. I love reading your blog. :)

I agree pretty much, except for the MOST EXCITING NEW SENIOR PAIR :p
The best for me, 1 and 2, were: Marchei&Hotarek and Astakhova/Rogonov. Not only based on their results but also based on their programs and performance.

I like M/H a lot, too. Valentina is just so fun to watch, and I've always liked Ondrej.

:( Never liked him. Still, they did a great job and I was absolutely surprised by them. I wasn't expecting their debut to be so good. In fact, I was expecting a disaster.

p.s. I love that you care so much about Pairs. :cheer2:

I love reading your blog - and think your insight is great. Now, it's time for you to put yourself out there and include your predictions on events!

I'd also love it if when you did recaps you gave a bit of insight into how you felt about the results vs your view on the performances. Your analysis is really great on a skater by skater basis - and I really like the way you comment on the technical aspects on the performances in an accessible (for example, I think your blog is very readable even for someone who doesn't have high level knowledge of the sport).

I guess what I'm saying is I'd love to see you be a bit more forceful in your overall view of things - and please don't receive that as a criticism, i mean it as a compliment - not only do I like your blog, but I like the *you* behind the writing itself, and want you to bring it out more. Besides the overall quality of the blog (your intelligence/insight and your quality of writing), you are a very likeable blogger/personality.

I wasn't expecting anything much either. I thought they were too old for a new partnership and that Valentina wouldn't be able to learn pairs fast enough! Guess I was wrong.

So is it Ondrej's skating that you didn't care for, or his personality or something?

I'm not that fond of his skating because I find him quite boring. I guess his personality doesn't attract me? I don't really know...he looks the same with all partners, and it's always them I'm looking at, and I'm fond of.

Just wanted to say I appreciate your feedback, @WanderlustTO. I think I understand what you mean about bringing in my point of view more, my own opinion. I will try. :)

For the most part, I've attempted to keep coverage of events even-handed, for a couple of reasons. First and foremost: The skaters themselves. Skaters are online just like the rest of us. They read Twitter comments, Facebook comments, and, believe it or not, sometimes they even read this blog. I'm not going to flatter myself that any of them read it regularly, but it does come to their attention now and then. A few times this year, skaters have shared some of the blog entries on Facebook when I said positive stuff about their skating. Knowing this changes things. I want to write in a way that's interesting, and I want to be able to speak critically at times when it seems necessary or worthwhile. But, to be strongly critical or negative about a team when I know it's entirely possible they might actually see it? . . . I'm still kind of feeling my way around this.

Another reason I've tried to keep it somewhat neutral is I know I'm just one voice and one opinion out there . . . For example, this season I wasn't a huge fan of new team Astakhova/Rogonov. But I know that other people on this board, whose opinions I respect, like them a lot. Plus, they're 10th in the world, they're obviously doing something right. So I although I don't personally love A/R, I've tried to really look at them, understand what they're doing well, and appreciate them. Ideally, I want to be inclusive, not dismissive, of other viewpoints. (Although it's quite hard or impossible to be so all the time. And sometimes honestly it's more interesting or entertaining to just take a stand on something!)

I will look for ways to get some more opinion in, when I can! Thanks again for your comments. :)

That's what I mostly like about your blog. Honestly I don't like or understand blogs who rant all the time and don't even try to be as much objective as they can, whether they like a skater or not.

Brilliant, Claire. I was never quite such a fan of Samantha's as others here, but you make a very strong case for her, and a very strong criticism of the IJS. I hadn't realized how many big health/injury problems she had.

It gladdens me to know how comforting this will be to her and her family, for many years to come. I hope this post will persuade some bigwigs to give a little more thought to the way PCS are scored and also to what is lost when URs are punished so severely.

Thank you, Spun! :)

But, as she made clear, the current state of figure skating and its judging system also played a significant role in her decision. Some people’s response to this is that Samantha should have simply fixed her underrotation/speed problems, and then she’d have had nothing to worry about. I guess my thoughts go in another direction. I question if we really want a judging system that has no place and no reward for such a talented, beautiful skater.

A-freakin'-MEN :respec: :respec:
