2025 Skate Canada Pairs SP PBP - Carmina BOO-rana

Well, CBC has blocked the video in the US and I'm not paying for a VPN to watch "from" Canada.
You're not missing much. Deanna and Max were just asked how they felt about their program and Deanna said, "Pretty disappointed. We lost some levels. We got a level 1 in something, no idea why, we just got a 4 on it five days ago at our last event. So that cost us like 3-4 points just on that element alone, so I don't know." She looked like steam was coming out of her ears though ... she was NOT a happy camper. When asked by the interviewer how they would regroup for the free program, Max jumped in and said that tomorrow is a new day and they would just have to go out there and attack and that's what they would do.

So, basically, it was just Deanna being Deanna .... same ol', same ol' ....we've seen/heard it all before.

The pairs teams are out early and out for "blood." I mean that in the best way. Japan going to Nebelhorn/Germany for an early CS. Hase & Volodin choosing Skate Canada against Stellato & Dudek at home. Sui & Han back in competition.

Stellato & Dudek have a great SP. I really like it. They weren't bad today, but they didn't hit it out of the park and that's where they want to be. Might as well pay attention to the details now because everyone's going to need them in Italy.

Wait, where in the heck is fantasy going on these days?
Golden Skate Skate Picks is in that genre.

Once SC is over, NHK Skate Picks will start.

Composite winners for the GP series are announced after the series finishes.

time delayed some comments:

The Swiss team is so good. I said so last year already but they improved even faster than I thought. European podium for sure if they keep it up!

Laurin has such a bad posture in her shoulders and her costume even underlined it. such a bad costuming decision. I could only look at her round shoulders the whole time. Why emphasize your biggest weakness with a bad dress?

The Poles - I had high hopes when they came onto the scene since he came from nowhere and was so good but they never really got any better - such a pity....

sorry for the Brits - they are much better than this.
Since the twist is almost always the first element, we all know how much strength and concentration it takes but I often forget since luckily so seldom sth goes totally wrong. I hope they forget about this soon and come back stronger.

LIa and Trennt - I am so glad that the music distraction did not turn them off. that is so unfair to the skaters. better outing than I expected from them! very nice.
I especially enjoyed their elegant death spiral. NOrmally an element I am very indifferent to but theirs was so elegant and classic.

Kam O`Shea - lots of tiny issues today apart from the throw. Last year`s program I liked better. Or was it the one before? this does not have the impact of that program.

SD/D
I admit, I am easily pleased and LOVE their salto!
I like Carmina Burana too but not especially sold on the rest of the program somehow
it somehow felt like a struggle without it being totally obvious that it was a struggle, if that makes sense?

Minerva and Nikia
wonderful
I am so glad she had the guts to break up with Nolan back then. I felt for him at the time but it was so much the right decision
I thought the gap between them and second place should be higher. and I might have switched second and third place as well.

ANd have not looked at the protocolls but I think the Swiss team should be nearer to Kam/O`Shea than they are.

THANK YOU. singing a line or two off the beat can be fun, i get it, but when you sing EVERY line three miles off the beat, it's just being obnoxious, i'm sorry

Yeah - I hate that affectation. Her version is unlistenable. Why can't anyone do the glorious John Cale recording. It's the ultra best supreme rendition of this song. They used it in Shrek for chrissakes!!!!!!

Apparently Leonard Cohen had them put up a sign at the Massey Hall saying singing of Hallelujah was not allowed unless the singer was kd lang. I love her version because of the natural raw power of her voice and her complete emotional commitment. I really object to caterwauling - to me that is the definition of someone like Patti LaBelle. As for being off beat - have you never listened to Leonard himself doing his songs? They are constructed to be to a different sense of timing than "normal". Along with his lyrics that's what makes them so great imho.

A really nice performance and moment from 2006. Also a quote in the comments from the woman sitting beside Cohen that night:

It's my belief Cohen really enjoyed her rendition because so many of the versions out there don't seem to understand the song the way Cohen intended it. Lang did.

Agree with this. kd lang lives inside that song when she sings it. I saw her sing it live at the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver olys and it was truly breathtaking.

Group One:
YAY BABY SWISS!!!
:wuzrobbed Brits. I just find them pleasing to watch and wanted them to do well.

I have no thoughts on the other two pairs.

Group Two:
OK, here me out on this: I hope somewhere, in some timeline, Deanna and Tatiana Tarasova found each other. Can you imagine what Tarasova could have done with that fire and intensity? She was meant to have a fiery Russian partner who she absolutely loathed and they did the best Assassin Tango ever. I btw flove this SP for her.

The Germans are just...wow. Sui/Han who? I will say this, and this always happens in an Oly year, you think OMG, pairs are in trouble, pairs are awful, unwatchable, and then, just like that...there are several pairs teams that you realize are amazing and the final group does have the potential to be amazing.

Lia and Trennnnnnt, just amazing. They made me like that horrible song while they skated, proving that if done right with the right skaters and choreo, any song can be a good song.

Kam/O'Shea. Sigh. I feel like this program should work for them. I see why on paper, yes, KD Lang Hallelujah, show off those fab skills, but it's just flat. The fight for pairs is going to be horrific and will probably come down to whoever spends the most time upright.
