2025 Skate America: Lake Placid (official 5.6.2025)

Dog sled.
Well, that might be a better option than my car, depending on weather...

I'm not thrilled about a 7 1/2 hour drive, even if it was 80 degrees. And I checked the rate for the Courtyard Marriott in LP and it's over $300/night.

Is there any word on a Challenger in the U.S. or Canada? I can't seem to find a complete list of events or schedule but I came across an ISU doc from March that says a Challenger will be hosted by either the U.S. or Canada. Depending on location, i might go there.

I haven't seen an ISU Communication yet announcing the Challenger Series events for next season. Canadian fans on X are convinced that it won't be in Canada because Skate Canada already released their competition calendar for next season & didn't include any early fall competitions like Autumn Classic.

The Hampton Inn doesn’t look bad and starts at $196

Just booked Hampton Inn Thursday-Sunday with free cancellation until the week before. Will hold off on airline til I know if DH will come with and we can drive instead of fly to Albany.

Maybe there is a chance the symbols mean Salt Lake City?
No. The gold medal makes it clear. USA didn't win gold in either men's or women's hockey in 2002. Plus, both the Delta Center nor the Maverik Center in SLC have events booked during the window required to host SkAm.

USA won gold in both 1960 and 1980 at home - Squaw Valley and Lake Placid. There's no rink at Squaw Valley anymore, so it's LP.

As I live in Manhattan, I just take AmTrak to Westport and then hire a car. You can also fly into Adirondack Regional Airport, or Albany or Montreal, and then take the bus or hire a car. Guess it depends where you're coming from.
I take the bus from the Albany Airport in July for the Ice Dance competitions, but November can be iffy since it's a 2.5 hour ride through the mountains.

I guess I was more thinking that Sarah Hughes won the gold medal at the 2002 SLC Olympics. But agree it is unlikely if the SLC arenas are unavailable. Unless they are look further out like Ogden.

I’m not planning to chance it. Flights from Logan to the closest airports aren’t cheap, and it’s a 6+ hour trip no matter whether you fly, take the train part of the way, or drive. By November, I’m already thinking about being warmer, not colder.

Hmmm, the list of upcoming events doesn't include a Challenger. If there isn't one in the U.S. and there isn't one in Canada, I guess that means none in N.A. Oh well, guess my next major comp will be Nats.

I noticed on the SA sched that they moved the men's FS back to Sat and the women to Sun.

Well, not necessarily. The ISU still hasn't issued any communication regarding next season's Challenger Series. The USFS may be able to announce anything until the ISU Council finalizes that.

There are at least a couple of comps on the NQS schedule that have also had a secondary international B comp attached to them in the past - Cranberry Open, Mid Atlantics and LA Autumn Classic. Also notable to me is that Skate Detroit (Aug 20-23) has all four disciplines scheduled as an NQS comp.

Never mind - the dream of not Lake Placid is dead. I will be missing Skate America for the first time since 2020. Hope those who can make the journey enjoy!

I know, I may be in the minority, but I don’t understand the appeal of this destination, for me it’s a complete lackluster.

I also prefer when SKAM goes first, and they switched with Grand Prix of France, correct?

@Firedancer and I will be driving from Albany. I gotta take Dramamine for that car ride
 @BlueRidge dragged me to LP in 2009 while my life was a complete mess, she would not let me cancel. But it is wise for us not to drive together, I’m way too fast or she’s way too slow, take your pick.

And I still get crap for not standing for Rachel Flatt.
