2025 Skate America: Lake Placid (official 5.6.2025)

Why does USFS insist on stretching out Grand Prix events over three days?

Do a Friday-Saturday event and let folx have Sunday as a travel day, seeing as how inaccessible Lake Placid is.

I hope SkAm revisits Vegas sometime soon as I rather enjoyed slumming it off the strip (winning dollar store Tupperware at the casino, mind you).
You do realize the USFS isn't the only GP host that stretches it out over 3 days. IIRC, last season, it was 3 that did it over 3 days and 3 that did it over 2 days.

I like not having to reserve an entire two days to watch, spread out is better. That said, I’m retired and can stay over Sunday night without a problem.
There’s no exhibition at Skate America from the looks of it and not at Skate Canada either, so ideally one would still be able to leave Sunday night. But as it goes, things are really limited in Lake Placid.

Even in St. Louis, I was hoping for a late-night flight to.. well, anywhere to get me to Britain faster.. but it seems like they don’t have much of anything flying out after 6 or 7 PM.

I’d prefer the two-day schedule after going through the three days at Skate America. The first day begins and ends so fast, and even the full schedule on the second day had a long break in between.

Probably better as a private message, but if anyone besides Tony needed to get to Britain or Europe after US nats in St. Louis, Lufthansa has a 3x weekly flight from STL-Frankfort. Departing at 3:30 p.m. on Sundays.

That’ll unfortunately almost surely be during the men’s free skate or some other championship final. 🫤

ETA- actually for now it says events end Saturday, but I’m not so sure that’ll stick.

With the FD and women’s final Sunday, there are no late flights from Plattsburgh to any airport near DC. So no practices for me; coming Friday, leave on Monday.

It's probably just as well.

I once took a flight in January that had an evening stopover in St. Louis. It was so cold that the luggage-handling equipment froze, and the airline put everyone up in a hotel.

My connecting flight to Wichita for this year's Nats was in St. Louis. St. Louis was fine...frigid but fine...but the flight was delayed about an hour b/c the plane was coming from Pittsburgh, and it was so cold there that morning that maintenance couldn't refuel the plane.

@tony Yes, the events are supposed to end Sat night (so they're starting the Senior events on Wed, I may come Tuesday if I don't go to SA) so theoretically you should be fine to leave Sun....but we probably won't know for sure until single-session tix go on sale.

@tony You're going to Euros too?! (I am assuming  I am trying to figure out WTF I am doing, if I am leaving Monday just straight for Manchester or what but it's such a shit-show since for me it would be STL-ATL-JFK-MAN so maybe better to just go to LHR and train it)

I’m thinking about it. And yeah it’s a bunch of flights no matter what really.

For those who may be taking Amtrak from NYC or elsewhere along the Adirondack line, I reached out to a reputable car service company with good reviews called Northern Lights for a quote to drive from Westport train station to Lake Placid.

The owner Derrick told me they charge $200 to drive to LP. I am planning to split the cost with a friend but that's more expensive than the Amtrak ticket roundtrip! I'm assuming it's the same cost to drive from LP back to the train station. I feel like they are price gouging because they know that there are few reliable options in the area. If anyone knows of another car service that is reliable that has lower prices, please let me know. I have looked on Uber, and it looks like it costs anywhere from $60-80 one way, but even with a reservation, I'm not sure if that is reliable.

I’m really planning on going to worlds in Prague if anyone is going, I know there’s a thread for it.

Northern Lights is the car service I used when I used to fly into Adirondack Regional years ago and I think it's the one the airport management recommends.

I am quite aware -- I have been closely following the sport for 20+ years.

Regardless, it makes no sense for this event (with no gala!) to stretch out three days, particularly in such a remote location not near a major airport.
