2025-26 OES News

Armenia has 5 participants in the whole Olympic team and besides A/R they are all competing in the mountains. So it seems like the only choice for Armenia to send A/R. They also have plenty of time before their competition starts.

Europe on Ice’s article about Karina Akopova and Nikita Rakhmanin. The piece talks in depth about Karina’s motivation to represent Armenia:

Lukas Britschgi has a documentary coming out about him.
SRF's press release: https://medien.srf.ch/-/«auf-dünnem-eis»-doku-serie-über-lukas-britschgi

Between glamour, pain and iron discipline, the three-part series "On Thin Ice" documents the career of a boy from the provinces who prevails in figure skating despite setbacks, resistance and prejudices.

The production traces Lukas Britschgi's journey from regional talent to international rising star, showcasing the personal and athletic challenges he overcomes along the way. He breaks with stereotypical gender roles and, as the newly crowned "Swiss Ice Prince," must face new expectations. A documentary series about a great passion on thin ice.

Broadcast: Every Wednesday on January 28, February 4 and February 11, 2026, at 9:00 p.m. on SRF 1
I've created a thread in TV Alerts for Britschgi's documentary (first 2 of the 3 episodes are on YT): https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/lukas-britschgi-srf-swiss-documentary.113713/

German press reported over the last days about Sauter's path to OG:
Kicked out of German squad, because she couldn't do triple jumps, which effectively blocked her path to the top in Germany.
Figure skater Julia Sauter to compete for Romania at the Olympics. She led the Romanian team into the stadium as flag bearer.
It's an incredible honour, and I'm absolutely delighted. This memory will stay with me forever.

Here is an article from 2010 with a qute picture: Julia Sauter makes people take notice
Julia Sauter caused a big surprise, finishing first after the short programme with 31.39 points and keeping her competitors well behind her. She stood out with her fast pace, excellent performance and overall confident appearance. On the second day of competition, the first three elements of her free skate were also fine. But then she showed a few weaknesses and ended up in 7th place overall.
If there is a post competition report about her, I'll post it here.
I'm very delighted, she had PB performances at Milano :cheer2:

Davide Lewton Brain's post today (his season is ending early because he didn't get the CTES he needed for Worlds though he did win the bronze at Tallink Hotels Cup a couple of days ago):
Not the ending I wanted. But an ending I can accept.
Swipe if you have a minute.
You can question the result, but you shouldn’t question the effort. I gave everything I had. That leaves no space for regret.
Work continues.

"Loena Hendrickx will not participate in the World Cup [Championships] of Figure Skating this year. She is focusing on recovering from her injuries and continues to train" - Belgian TV interview clip:

Loena's Instastory today, captioned in English, reads: "No Worlds for me. It's been a demanding season and an early start, and I've been dealing with a few minor injuries along the way. I'm incredibly grateful for all the support and love this season 🫶"

Jade Hovine is listed as the Belgian sub. and hopefully will get her second opportunity to compete at Worlds (2023 was her debut): https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00108998.htm

ETA - good to see Hovine's name is now listed in the ISU Entries (Hendrickx has been moved to Sub. status).

Niina Petrokina's post today recapping her injury recovery journey to the Olympics:

Aleksandra Golovkina's post lauding Meda Variakojyte today:
Meda ❤️ The first skater in the history of Lithuania to become an Olympian! I know what an extremely difficult road she was on and how many difficulties she has encountered - especially in the last few seasons. She fought until the end and made her dream come true! ✨ I believe she has more great achievements in the future because she is a very strong person.

@meda.variakojyte Although we are competitors on the ice, I have great respect for you and I am truly happy that Your work paid off - Your strength is inspiring ❤️ You looked amazing ✨ ant️✨

Back in Germany:
Back from the Olympic Games: figure skater Julia Sauter-Czarnik from Ravensburg together with her coach Roxana Hartmann from ESC Ravensburg 💙🤍 After many championship titles (among other times Romanian champion) now one of the best European athletes at the Winter Games in Italy.

Yesterday, finally local paper "Schwäbische Zeitung" published an article about Julia Sauter
As of now it's not paywalled, which is unusual. Here are (just in case) excerpts:
Julia Sauter-Czarnik is now back on the ice at the CHG Arena in Ravensburg. The 28-year-old is preparing with her coach Roxana Hartmann for the World Championships in Prague at the end of March.
...
Sauter-Czarnik still beams when she thinks back on her ten days in Italy. ‘Everything was absolutely wonderful from start to finish, just fantastic,’ says the 28-year-old. ‘I'm proud and happy that I performed perfectly at the Olympic Games.’ With 63.16 points, Sauter-Czarnik, who has been competing for Romania for many years, had already set a personal best in the short programme. ‘My family was there, it was great that I could show what I had worked on in training,’ says the Ravensburgerin.
...
Her husband Robbie Czarnik was also there for the short programme. The Ravensburg Towerstars forward travelled to Milan after his team's DEL2 match against the Kassel Huskies. ‘As a professional, he understands a little better what it means to be able to compete at the Olympic Games,’ says Sauter-Czarnik.

Her husband got a day pass and was allowed to accompany her to the Olympic Village. ‘We printed a selfie on a Coke bottle, took pictures with the Olympic rings and I showed him everything,’ says the figure skater.
...
A member of her home club, ESC Ravensburg, had applied to be a volunteer. ‘He was standing right by the boards, and I looked straight at him after my free skate, which was quite funny,’ says Sauter-Czarnik. But it wasn't just this brief encounter that put her in a good mood and made her feel very proud. The Ravensburgerin also succeeded in her free skate, achieving another personal best with 127.80 points. ‘I've been trying to score 175 points for a long time, so I was briefly shocked when I saw 190 on the scoreboard,’ says Sauter-Czarnik with a laugh.

Videos of the scoring show the 28-year-old literally freaking out with joy and throwing her arms around her long-time coach. In the end, she scored 190.93 points, putting Sauter-Czarnik in 17th place. ‘You work for years to remain flawless in the short programme and the free skate, and I managed to do that at the Olympic Games.’
...
As the Romanian flag bearer at both the opening and closing ceremonies, the 28-year-old was already in the spotlight. ARD and ZDF were also interested in her story. ‘I made the decision to compete for Romania 15 years ago.’ It was to be expected that this story surrounding the Olympic Games would be picked up by many. ‘But it was also exhausting,’ says the athlete.
...
Sauter-Czarnik did not feel nervous at all during those days. ‘Between the short programme and the free skate, I was calmer than ever,’ she says. ‘I just wanted to enjoy everything, and maybe that helped me skate so well.’
There is one video by ARD about her story:

  • It was an incredible moment to walk as a flag bearer into the stadium
  • Baden-Württemberg fed said no, when she couldn't do two tripples at the age of 15, which was necessary to get into national squad/envelope
  • a bit about her husband
