I just saw they thought the score was too low, but also i don't disagree about Chock/Bates. They should be closer to everyone else. Honestly ice dance overall should be much more competitive than it currently is. There's like 10 teams or so i think could be changing podium places on any given day but it's just not the scoring reality. GOEs are treated like ordinals and don't really indicate what happened on the ice most of the time and it's exhausting but also i guess that's the new vision.
It's the old vision too. Unfortunately.

Chock has more vision in her pinky than 75% of the field, but it doesn’t excuse the reality that she’s (unsurprisingly, given age and length of career) getting even slower and cautious in some of the steps and edges.

The program is good, the concept maybe even great. 1930s era of The Empire State is conceptually fertile, but they haven’t elevated it up to its potential yet. Wish they leaned more into just like straight Buddy Rich solos vs. club singing and scating to Take Five.

The concept is 1930s NYC? Evan DEFINITELY needs to change his costume. Zoot suit, tout suite!

Well, Art Deco and jazz continue to be important cornerstones of NY, but I say 20s/30s given the height of the Jazz Age. Could be a 50s business man going out for a night in the city
Take Five was released in 1959, so Evan might be dressed correctly and Maddie in the wrong style.

So, why don't the ice dance aficionados here explain why it wasn't?

Curious: Would you have put Fear and Gibson higher in the free dance? Above the Italians or Gilles and Poirier?

I don't think F&G are nearly as bad as people make them out to be, and I'd love to see them as World Champions for sh*ts and giggles . That said, I thought the scores were spot on today, from a relative standpoint. (Ice dance judging is all so wacky that I think we're back to 6.0-like relativism with the GOEs and PCS.)

F&G's elements were scored higher than G&F, which I agree with. Presentation was about equal. Composition had more of a gap. But the biggest gap remains skating skills, which IMO is fair.

One competition is a snapshot in time. Things can, do, and should change from competition to competition.

The FDs by the top 4 make me feel like they all got together and decided to collectively create crappy programs as commentary on how little anything matters in ice dance scoring. It's all so bad that Chock and Bates skating to scat is the best of the lot.
You are not wrong about this. About the only thing I'm thankful for is that ChoBat didn't try to take their white sheet exh program or their "I Hear a Symphony" exh from last year and convert it into a FD for this season.
