2024 Canadian Spring/Summer/Fall Competitions

Sorry that the remnants of Debby caused you so much trouble @Aaron MB Fan - I hope your nephew made his flight!!
@DE93 said it took almost an hour and a half to go 4 km last evening after the event and then the elevators were down at the hotel :( It sounds like you made the right decision.

Yes he did thankfully! His roommate who is going to Italy with him was coming from Ottawa with my sister and brother in law and they only made it to the airport 45 mins before boarding. The roads were so bad they got a flat tire and my poor bro in law had to change it in the pouring rain. Took them almost 4 hours to get there!

And wow 1.5 hours to go 4km after the event, glad I made the right decision to go back to the hotel!

The entire 40 was flooded after Kirkland and I’m pretty sure anyone on the highway was stuck there until well into the wee hours. We were stuck on the service road for a while and were eventually directed up an on-ramp near Baie D’Urfe and had to go down onto the 20 to get anywhere. It was a long time in the car after a very long day at the rink!

What madness. At least today is a nicer day and back to some normalcy. Looking forward to the Sr Pairs and Jr/Sr Dance teams!

Sr Pairs thoughts:

Didn’t get to see Fiona and Benjamin’s LP in Ottawa as they withdrew. Liked this program for them better than the SP. Saw some nice qualities today. Still very early so some bumps along the road. But a much improved skate in a matter of a couple of weeks. Hopefully they continue to improve with more mileage.

Kelly-Ann & Loucas looked good overall. I think this might be the best suited program they’ve had for themselves in quite some time. Some nice highlights, more performance and emoting, and some elements looked better than I remember. Still some roughness so early on but good start to build on for them. I’m sure the huge home crowd cheering also helped out!

I put my thoughts about their SP score (as well as Schmitz/Eberl from last weekend) in the Canadian Pairs discussion thread but do you think they're ready for SCI or do they need more time skating together and competing at lower-profile competitions?

I haven’t had a chance to watch Schmitz/Eberl yet so can’t comment for them. I would say it would be a stretch for Fiona and Benjamin right now but 2.5 months is a lot of time as a brand new team so with monitoring maybe they can prove it? They are still too rough and need to work on pairs timing which comes with practice hours and lower profile competitions under your belt.

I posted links to Schmitz/Eberl's programs in the Canadian Pairs thread if you're interested in watching them for comparison's sake.

Thank you! So I had the chance to watch both of Schmitz/Eberl's programs and I totally agree with your comments. They have a surprising good look so early on, are well matched and much better matched together than either individually with their prior partners. The elements still need more work, especially the jumps for them to be ready for a major assignment like a GP.

However, I would agree that they actually are better matched and have a stronger Pairs feel than Fiona and Benjamin right now. That third pairs spot at SCI is really up for grabs with the middle tier of Canadian Pairs retiring or breaking up in the past 1-2 years.

Thoughts on the Dance events:

Jr Dance: The top 2 teams stood out the most for me. Was impressed by Auréa Cinçon‐Debout / Earl Jesse Celestino. Wasn't sure what to expect as they have very little almost no height difference, but they skated with great speed and had nice movement. It was very evident in comparing them vs the others outside of Gauthier & Thieren. He has nice skating skills as I've come to expect from a Celestino. I was also pleased with Sandrine & Quentin in their return to Juniors. I felt a lot more confidence and attack in their skate today than I saw last year where I think they felt perhaps overwhelmed against a competitive and large Sr Dance pool in Canada. Going back to Juniors feels like the right move for them long-term. They had some bizarre music choices within their program that didn't totally jive all together, though I liked the pieces all on their own, but I enjoyed the program a lot nonetheless.

Sr Dance: All 4 teams were very enjoyable. Lots of cheers for Zhu and Fournier - they look good together. Loved the highlight of her in a full split. Spiridonov and Pham also had a nice program. She is very striking and gorgeous! Really captures your attention. Harris & Chan got a lot of audience support, the skaters sitting nearby loved their music choice in Claire de Lune. I love that piece too, but IMO it isn't a piece Harris & Chan can pull off and isn't suited to their strengths. Paul & Alicia looked good for so early on in the season, hopefully they can build from here!

I'm watching the last two groups of senior women at Quebec summer skate. Earlier Mia Clarke scored over 100 points landing a few nice triples (toe, sal and loop) and popped a lutz to a single.

Miclette just skated and she popped four jumps to singles....Sigh.

Yes Miclette’s skate was rough hard to watch. At least she finally rotated more jumps toward the end. But she’ll be disappointed with her outings this season so far.

Breken Brezden however had an amazing skate again just now!! 118.59!! She could be a dark horse podium threat for Nationals at this rate.

Brezden had a wonderful skate and landed a ton of triple, TES on the tracker over 60 before review. I think she attempted all the triples through lutz and had one fall. 118.59! 172.64 is her total. This is above the standard Skate Canada set for an international so I hope they are paying attention!

Yes she attempted all the triples, landed 2 lutzes, a double axel triple toe combo, and I think the fall might have been on the flip as she went in with quite a lean. Great skate!! She has beautiful presentation although the music is a bit boring and doesn’t do her skating justice. Exciting to see a result like this!

Landry's jumps are huge though I wonder if she will ever get a triple triple. Another skater who should get an international assignment based on her Challenge score from last season.

My first time seeing Landry live and she did not disappoint! Love the height and size of her jumps, beautiful! Hopefully she can get a triple triple eventually.

Really enjoyed her program. She is a rare balance of power and strength in her skating combined with grace and some elegance. Packaged well too!

Pomerlau was probably surprised to find herself in first here after the SP. Her LP wasn’t as strong today. Her packaging has improved since I first saw her live in nationals a couple of years ago, but the jumps and presentation not quite where others like Landry, Brezden and of course Dupuis are.

Quick note from the Sr. Men SP last night - Wesley Chiu had an excellent skate. Clean 4T-2T, 3A, 3Lutz, all level 4 steps and spins. Very encouraging! I actually thought he was underscored a bit for a provincial competition, but perhaps the judges are trying to keep the scores realistic for international competitors.

It looks like they are really behind at the Optimist rink. They are just starting the last warmup flight of pre novice women group 4 and junior women was supposed to start 6 minutes ago.
