Thanks, I know there’s a lot of hope placed on their shoulders so hope the season holds progress for them.

So, the NQS is over and things are definitely looking interesting for the Pairs Final. Fredette/Siianytsia only did their choreo seq, death spiral and pairs combo spin in the FS today, so we don't really have much idea of what their scoring potential is - but we'll find out at the Pairs Final, I guess, lol.

We already discussed the Sr Teams looking to qualify for Nats.

Here are who we have on the Jr level -
Moss/Galbavy - 145.48 (Glacier Falls NQS)
Hansen/Church - 132.44 (JGP Poland)
Carpenter/Maravilla - 129.80 (JGP Poland)
Jarmoc/Witkowski - 123.62 (Boston NQS)
McDanold/Felberbaum - 121.82 (JGP Turkiye)
McFarland/Andjorin - 108.51 (Greater Chicagoland NQS)
Shapovalova/Griffin - 106.78 (Pacific NW Interclub NQS)
Gottschalk/Herbert - 102.20 (Greater Chicagoland NQS)
Kovar/McPike - 97.10 (Boston NQS)
Grohne/Lunt - 95.30 (Cup of Colorado NQS)

And, we had EIGHT novice teams compete in the NQS this season! Plus one more that was entered for Boston but wound up withdrawing.

Meek, Juliet/Meek, Devin - 117.84 (Boston NQS)
Kerr, Alena/Castelletti, Mitchell - 104.56 (Glacier Falls NQS)
Tanner, Tallulah/Apter, Nikolai - 96.91 (Pacific NW Interclub NQS)
Gariti, Giuliana/Curtis, Matthew - 94.28 (Boston NQS)
Yun, Elizabeth/McGee, Blake - 90.81 (Pacific NW Interclub NQS)
Tietjen, Eleanor/Prudsky, Nikita - 86.93 (Boston NQS)
Ji, Lauren/Chen, Luciano - 83.22 (Boston NQS)
Floyd, Cadence/Lewis, Hudson - 12.87 (Cup of Colorado NQS)
Moeller, Macy/Spencer, Ian - no score

And those who lack one or both tech minimums for 2025 Nats (SP 25.00 and FS 42.00) will need to achieve them at NQS Boston or U.S. Pairs Final. As of now (AFAIK):

Fitzpatrick/Bearinger and Hanns/Neudecker have achieved FS minimum, but not SP minimum (although both pairs have come very close to it).
Martins/Bedard and Cooke/Kennedy have not achieved either minimum.
Shin/Nagy and Fredette/Siianytsia have not competed yet in NQS, and have not had a chance to achieve minimums.

Fitzpatrick/Bearinger got their SP minimum just barely in Boston so now they have both for Nationals
Cooke/Kennedy got their short minimum but just barely don't have their FS minimum :( 41.84
Shin/Nagy got both minimums
Fredette/Siianytsia got their SP minimum.

Plazas/Fernandez are out of both of their GPs - not really a surprise to anyone who has been following them on IG - I haven't seen any clips of Max on the ice post-Champs Camp where he apparently suffered a concussion. They do have a bye to Nationals so hopefully they'll be healthy by then, but I suspect it would be their first competition of the season if they're already choosing to WD from CoC in another 5 weeks.

Message from Plazas/Fernandez today:
Hello everyone,
We are extremely saddened to announce that we have made the tough decision to withdraw from the Grand Prix series, NHK and Cup of China. Due to an ongoing injury, we must focus on a full recovery this season. We have been working hard in every way imaginable and have had a wonderful team behind us during this time.
We hope to comeback stronger and be able to represent Team USA at our best and healthiest time. Thank you for your support, kindness, and understanding.❤️

We appreciate all the kind words and wishes from everyone 🫶🏻 it’s a devastating situation but are hopeful and continue to plan towards the bigger picture. We can’t wait for the time when we can get back to training.

Wishing all our competitors a fantastic GP season❤️

Belated shout out to the 4 pairs that competed at Tayside Trophy in Dundee, Scotland last weekend:

Naomi Williams/Lachlan Lewer came back from 6th in SP to win their first senior international medal (bronze).

Saya Carpenter/Jon Maravilla won Junior gold and Addyson McDanold and Aaron Felberbaum won silver and got their TES minimum for Junior Worlds (Williams/Lewer can be seen standing on the podium in the back in the 2nd pic & the 3rd pic shows the Junior Pairs podium):
Reagan Moss/Jakub Galbavy were 4th.

ETA: 6 Junior pairs now have the minimum combined technical elements score (63) for Junior Worlds.

That gives us SIX teams with the Jr Worlds CTES mins! Nationals is going to be a really tight battle for the three Jr Worlds spots - and no need to send any other team out to earn the mins right now.

Naomi and Lachlan seems to be planning to get a spot in the Junior Worlds team
They mentioned last spring that they'd like to go to Jr Worlds again - they need to produce better results at the senior level to demonstrate they should get a spot over one of the other four teams who are only junior age-eligible.

Hansen/Church came home from their 2nd JGP and started learning a throw triple - Elizabeth's posted some decent attempts on her IG. Carpenter/Maravilla have been improving rapidly too.

Katie McBeath and Daniil Parkman were interviewed on This Week in Skating. I loved hearing Daniil's feelings about his first U.S. Nationals :)

They also strongly hinted that they have a new short program, different from the one they did at the John Nicks competition.
Another link to listen: https://redcircle.com/shows/this-week-in-skating-podcast/ep/d36afe20-0328-4256-afec-719d3c721e51

Great Park Ice today posted a set of photos of McBeath/Parkman preparing for Skate America:

As has been mentioned in other threads today, Katie & Daniil have received a 2nd GP assignment :) - #6 Cup of China.

Max Fernandez confirmed at the beginning of the Anything GOEs Livestream just now that he had a procedure (not surgery) done right after Worlds for the tendinitis in his left knee and that they will be out for the 2024-25 season. He leaves tomorrow to have surgery on his knee - to repair a tear in the tendon at the bottom of his kneecap (it's separating from the tendon) and it hurts whenever he does a Salchow or toe loop (he's been dealing with this for the past 2 years). "Better now than next season" said Val. They are hopeful Max -- and the team -- will come back stronger next season.

Just beat me to posting this. :)

I'm so bummed for them, but maybe it's for the best. They can save their Dune FS for next season when there isn't, hopefully, at least one program per discipline at every competition to the soundtrack.

SILVER at Skate America for Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea and BRONZE for Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov! :)
Excerpts from USFS' recap: https://www.usfigureskating.org/new...ls-home-three-medals-second-day-skate-america
It marked the first time that two U.S. pairs teams finished on the podium at a fully international Skate America since 2006. [...]
Kam and O’Shea delivered their best outing yet with a sensitive and lyrical performance to Florence & the Machine’s rendition of “Stand by Me.” Marked by difficult transitions into and out of elements, the program built to a dramatic finale with three superb lifts, all executed in the final third of the routine.
The 2024 Four Continents bronze medalists garnered personal best free skate and overall scores of 131.07 and 201.73 points, respectively, to clinch their first Grand Prix medal.
“Our lifts are a strong point in our skating, so we always want to end our program on a high note and leave the crowd wanting more,” Kam said. “Putting our lifts at the end is a strategic decision so that we can always leave our best foot out on the ice and showcase what we are good at.”
The Colorado Springs, Colorado-based duo began their partnership in June 2023 and have gelled quickly. Their free skate marked the first time that the veteran O’Shea has earned 200 points in his career.
“I’m pleased with their progress and also optimistic about where they can go,” coach Drew Meekins said. “They worked hard in the offseason on a lot of things, of course, solidifying their technical elements. But also, they wanted programs this season that were challenging, that pushed them. People are always saying nice things about their choreography, but we wanted to take it to another level, so we really pushed the envelope there. It’s nice to see them get rewarded.”
Skating to the romantic “Je Suis Malade” performed by Forestella, choreographed by five-time U.S. ice dance champion Renee Roca, Efimova and Mitrofanov nailed their triple throws and side-by-side triple Salchow-double Axel combination to secure a personal best 128.46 points. Her impeccable positions, supported by his strength and technique, made for superior pair elements. They finished with an overall score of 191.51, also a personal best.
For Efimova and Mitrofanov, who are only in the second season of their partnership, the medal is also their first Grand Prix podium finish as a team.
“We were in a good state of being connected in the program, so we went for each element, and it was all along quite comfortable to skate here,” Efimova said.
Katie McBeath and Daniil Parkman chalked up their first Grand Prix Series event to experience, finishing with a free skate score of 111.39 and an overall total of 168.08.
The team began skating together in May 2023.
“I think it was a great learning tool that will carry us forward,” McBeath said. “… We showed some improvements, and I liked our connection.”
McBeath and Parkman train in Irvine, California, under USOPC Coach of the Year Jenni Meno Sand.
“They have been running clean programs at home,” Meno Sand said. “This is their first big competition together, and I think it's good for them to see how performing that free skate feels — each time they do it, I think it gets better.”

@clairecloutier posted an X thread (5 posts copied out below) after speaking to Emily and Spencer in the mixed zone after today's SCI24 practice - photo here: https://x.com/adivinesport/status/1849836773762805903
Spencer Howe: "The summer was continuing that road to recovery [from shoulder surgery]. I'm happy to say that it went really well. My shoulder is much better, stronger than ever. I had to undergo a lot of physical therapy."
Chan/Howe considered re-using last year's programs, as they only competed twice last season. "I wanted to keep them, mostly the [Elvis] short, but our coaches, especially Olga [Ganicheva], wanted us to have a fresh start," said Howe. They choreographed new programs with Ganicheva
Chan: "Last year, we had to modify most of our programs because of his shoulder. We wanted to have something that was suitable for us at our current time."
Howe on training with Alisa Efimova/Misha Mitrofanov: "It's a huge blessing for us. We like them both as people, they're really great. To see them already doing so well, it's super-inspiring for us." He added that skating together helps both teams improve.
Howe on doing shows in Japan this summer: "We're super-grateful to be able to go to Japan; we love it there. It was really beneficial for us to get out there early on" and get audience feedback on their skating.

Martins/Bedard (injured?)
Shin/Nagy

Kam/O'Shea article by NBC Sports' Nick Zaccardi (Oct. 30):
Excerpt:
“In pairs, I think to really give a real, true performance, you have to feel like equals,” Meekins said. “I think that part took a little bit longer. ... I think it took (Kam) a bit to really feel like she could offer the team as much as he could. And now that I think she feels that way, that they feel like they’re true partners, you really are starting to see them perform to their potential.”

Isabelle Martins/Ryan Bedard’s post of gratitude today :): https://www.instagram.com/p/DB2DFKHTvLH/
We are so grateful to be invited to compete at NHK Trophy next week! Although it’s last minute, we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on 🫶🏻

see you soon Tokyo!! 🥰🤭

ETA that NHK Trophy only will be their second competition of the season. They scored 141.52 at the 2024 Glacier Falls Summer Classic NQS in July to qualify for the U.S. Pairs Final, which is the week after NHK, so they should get a bye to Nationals now? - yes, confirmed re. M/B's bye to Nationals (I forgot they recently had been assigned to Warsaw Cup).

I just realized you left out Sadusky/Digerness, & Fitzpatrick/Bearinger and now they will get a travel bye due to IceChallenge.

Also Martins/Bedard and Shin/Nagy now get a bye because of Warsaw Cup.

Looks like not many pairs will be at the Pairs Final..30min. Short program and 40min FS event on the schedule.

Efimova/Mitrofanov are in the mix for a medal tomorrow in Angers: https://x.com/goldenskate/status/1852431460705116228
Alisa Efimova / Misha Mitrofanov 🇺🇸 64.08 [0.3 behind Pereira/Michaud in 3rd]
Alisa: “We feel really good and really happy. It was a long day and I was really, really nervous, out of nowhere, more than usually. I am happy that we managed our nerves.”
Misha: “It was a tough fight and we are happy we stayed on our feet. Skating here felt great, we knew we would have France right after Skate America, so we feel well prepared. It was really nice to skate here, the crowd is very warm and welcoming.”
We asked them if they found new confidence in their side by side jumps and they agreed on that! 💪🏻

There is NOTHING in either the 2025 Qualifying Bye Advancement Criteria or the USFS Rulebook that mentions a 10-day travel bye to Nats.

https://www.usfigureskating.org/sites/default/files/media-files/2024-25 Rulebook.pdf - Rule 2510

The following teams meet the Bye Criteria:
Kam/O'Shea - Top 5 2024 Nats
Efimova/Mitrofanov - Top 5 2024 Nats
McBeath/Parkman - Top 5 2024 Nats
Chan/Howe - 2024 Worlds Team
Flores/Wang - JGPF Qualifier

The following 5 teams do not meet the criteria listed in the 1st document (3 approved int'l competitions):
Williams/Lewer (John Nicks IPC & Finlandia + Tayside Trophy)
Martins/Bedard (NHK Trophy & Warsaw Cup)
Digerness/Sadusky (John Nicks IPC + IceChallenge)
Fitzpatrick/Bearinger (John Nicks IPC + IceChallenge)
Shin/Nagy (Warsaw Cup)

Obviously Williams/Lewer will receive a Bye despite not meeting the criteria since they have had 3 internationals including 2 that are on the approved competitions list and their 2nd approved competition is at the same time as the Pairs Final.

Martins/Bedard are also going to get a Bye since there's no way the USFS is going to make them compete three weeks in a row, plus they now have 2 approved competitions.

I have no idea whether or not the USFS is going to play fast & loose with their own rules and go ahead and give the other three teams a Bye to Nats. I know we talked about this last season because there are far fewer pairs international competitions than singles or ice dance competitions and it could be that they have privately determined that 2 assigned internationals (even ones that aren't fully funded) will qualify for a Bye to Nats.

Of the 7 teams that may or may not be required to compete at the Pairs Final, I don't see a problem with giving DigSad, FitzBear & ShiNagy Byes through to Nats because they are all on the IPS and, in the case of DigSad & FitzBear scored well enough at John Nicks IPC to be added to the GP Alternates List. Had ShiNagy been ready for competition in early Sept, I'd guess they probably would have also scored well enough to get on the GP Alternates List based on their NQS score. If DigSad, FitzBear & ShiNagy are required to also compete at the Pairs Final, I'd be surprised if they fail to qualify for Nats based on their NQS & ISU SB scores.

Digerness/Sadusky - 166.00 NQS, 147.72 John Nicks IPC
Shin/Nagy - 157.59 NQS
Korytek/Chapman - 156.28 NQS (age-ineligible for int'l competition)
Cooke/Kennedy - 137.86 NQS
Hanns/Neudecker - 135.49 NQS, 128.78 John Nicks IPC
Fitzpatrick/Bearinger - 134.86 John Nicks IPC (no NQS score, but probably would have scored higher than CooKen & HanNeu had they competed at a domestic event in addition to JNIPC)
Fredette/Siianytsia - 90.37 NQS (watered down FS with no jumping elements)

We should know soon enough which teams have Byes through to Nats when we see the Pairs Final entry lists.
