Maria Sotskova SP Open Skates

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9pRjQ4uIc4

She skates to Fever . . . which should be banned with Phantom and Carmen.

She skates well but does a not ugly double of the flip.

I found it boring.
I firmly believe that sexy music should be banned unless you have someone like Ashley or V/M or H/D that can actually be sexy on ice. There's way too many skaters who are the opposite of sexy (or obviously underage - looking at Alina's EX last year and Trusova's Big Spender) trying to be sexy and it's really uncomfortable to watch.

Maria in particular... If anyone has the ice princess image to me it's her. Especially with her pink dress last year all I see is princess and nice. She doesn't even have that toughness you could see in Gracie. This was definitely a bad choice for Maria.

My least favorite style of music, but looking past that, I see a big improvement in speed. This program flows a lot more than Eteri-style stuff that at times looked robotic and like every single movement was exactly placed rather than going with the flow at that moment. That said, the Lutz is still a work in progress but there’s still no hiding that wrong edge. Also, circa the end of the 2017 season, her 3+3 combos were looking a lot less jerky between the jumps (ie, the 3T was looking much more effortless). But throughout last season and still here, that extra split second of adjusting the body/muscling seems to be back.

There’s a lot to be hopeful for, but I really am not going to dig hearing this music all season :(

I was hoping for more. A new style for him, but there’s really nothing but business until the very end of the program— very old-school Plushenko/Joubert/Van Der Perren. I think especially working with Misha Ge (right?) that he’d have much more body involvement and rises and falls. But, he tried a decent 4Lo here which was surprising.

This year, Gachinski choreographed his SP, Denis Ten the free. I think Ge worked with him last year.

I totally disagree about Sotskova; I think it's a new look for her and I think it could really work. It's hard to see if she is selling it with the low quality video. I think she's in a no win situation because if she goes classical, people will say she's boring or isn't venturing out.

Wow that ice-skating rink was like a whose who of figure skating

I like that the departure of her previous music choices to this although I think Brian skated to this before

Oh these videos are so good. They have to skate in front of all these people? Who is the man or assistant coach that's always with Eteri. What's his story… And I don't mind if it's gossip. Teehee

I kind of wish something very random would happen like all of a sudden now you see Alexa and Chris Knierim about to state their program there. LMAO

I did not think Sotskova could get any more boring. I was wrong.

I find it kind of amusing to call it a new look when about her only other non-classical competitive program I can think of was also to Santana, a few years ago (not sure if it’s the same piece as they all sound the same to me). I see what you mean about her not being able to win but the program is really blah in any event. Her Kalinka exhibition last season is the one time I saw her show some personality - maybe something along that line would work.

There are a few touches of Elizabet Tursynbaeva's I Got Rhythm from 2 season's ago in Medvedeva's Orange Coloured Sky - David Wilson did both programs.

- My girl, Polina T, is an absolute beauty. That posture is so royal, I love her. :swoon:

- Tuk is in great shape, solid performance and she has the best SP I've seen so far. That 2A so on point with the note was glorous. You go girl! :respec:

- Alina, very good performance and program. Don't care for the Phantom but it's a good choreo and she looked very good overall.

- Maria S, never been her fan but she looks in great form and I like the program. Very well skated.

These were my favorites so far.

That's right."Code Geass"

First time I hear the 2nd and 3rd, and I love it. Not sure how they connect with Lenningrad but we'll see.

My unexpected favorite of the ladies SP was Sofia Samodurova. I thought the choreography bridged the sharp flourishes of flamenco with the gliding of the ice. I wonder if part of my enjoyment was because she was wearing a costume that suited both her and the music so well.

I liked Medvedeva's short program. She looks happy and I'm so happy to have a program from her where she doesn't have the surprised look.

Zagitova's Phantom wasn't terrible, it was just bland. She's a very talented skater, but she didn't really connect with the music, which imho you must do if you're skating to a warhorse.

I didn't mind Tarasova/Morozov's short program music pic as long as they really go for it the way Hough & Ladret did many many years ago.

Whoever's in charge of T/M's music selections should be banned from figure skating for life.

I'm not sure if it's the music or them not going for it. It seemed to me they could be skating anything which had nothing to do with that music choice.
I need to see the program again, in competition, with costumes and all.

S/B must like screechy vocals. Their hydroblade twizzles at the end are pretty cool. But even from far away, you can tell he is skating it better than she.
