2017-2018 Program Music and Choreographers

@MAXSwagg
It could be worse. Back at 2010 Synchro Worlds the Rockettes had 2/3 of their LP was "Catch me if you can" and "Mission Impossible". And then the last 1/3 was tropical hula-esque music. It only made a bit of sense when you saw their jumbotron team video that explained the program was about women carrying out a bank robbery together and then escaping to a tropical island paradise with their money. This choice makes a lot more sense and doesn't require a paragraph long explanation of the music choice. (God that program was so nonsensical and terrible and I still can't believe they won with it) And that was at the end of a season.

Note to skaters...and THAT is how you do it. Early, late, or in the middle.

He really used his off season time to learn his program and hone his craft.

At this point I'm just f*cking scared Chen is going to retire from skating and go to Harvard IF he wins the big prize next year. I think it'll take a lot for him to win, but you never know.

he won´t win, too much hype will add too much pressure for him. At least Japan will divide the pressure between Shoma and Yuzu.

Omg, what a chopped and screwed program! I would give this a 7 at most for composition! The two pieces have nothing to do with one another, and the step sequence is a completely missed opportunity to incorporate Nijinsky's original Ballets Russes choreography (the first second or two when it started I got very excited but it was just a let down). I get how they're trying to follow the premise of the movie by chopping the pieces together but... Why didn't they just make the whole program with Le Sacre? I will need time with this. Loved the spins at the end though, with good speed and strong positions (except the camel position, which was ugly...ugly legs).
I was expecting a program only using Rite of Spring as well. So I was taken back a bit because it's not. But it's a nice choice for Nathan overall.
Still waiting for a program that uses Rite of Spring music only, though.

The same thought crossed my mind but I agree with @chapis that he will not win.

I think it would be wonderful if Chen wins an Olympic Medal and then retires and goes to Harvard. In my book, sport is a hobby even if for a time it takes up a lot of time, and education is more important to lead a normal life.

I also very much like the fact that his FS is music and theme from "Mao's Last Dancer", a life story of chinese dancer Li Cunxin, who defected to USA, reached high level of success, and at the age of 30, on his own free will left the stage, enrolled in business school, and now a successful Investment Broker in Australia.

I don't know about Harvard but I would retire with that OGM

ok....... for the 3rd year same LP... Are we to expect "Unmaking of the La-La-Land" or "Re-making of the MR" film this time?
Will she be wearing a hat with Dog Ears in Korea?
I can bet on one occurrence, if her re-use tactics do not pan out at the end of the season, we're probably going to hear another "I am still big! It's the girls that got smaller".

What is she thinking?

She had her best season with those programs and probably thinks she can re-create a 2016 Worlds moment. To be fair, most of the Olympic audiences will probably be seeing those programs for the first time.

Apparently they said they will use Chaplin next season as they were told at ChampsCamp to go back to Ghost.
:fragile:

Gotta say I'm disappointed but I understand the decision. Also, I'm not a fan of Ghost programs, but I thought their Ghost was one of the more watchable ones. Plus, the "repeating programs" critique doesn't really apply to Chris&Alexa because they missed so much of the last season.

It such a shame that he doesn't do sole Rite of Spring program though as, judging from this year fs, he is one of a few who have capability to do it well.

Oh, I disagree. Mao's Last Dancer is a great story, with themes of loss, isolation, sacrifice in order to create. A sense of darkness and light. About a dancer who survives and bridges two cultures with his gift. The opening piece with the footwork is different and unique. Rite of Spring is magnificent, and there is room for a future program there (which we will no doubt get). But this is a fabulous choice right now. As is.

Yes but as someone who doesn't understand Mao's last dancer. I would take it as just a Chinese-like program. It's a nice program and all.
But as a classical music fan, we of course want a Rite of Spring program only.

I too would love to see Rite of Spring as its own programme, because am familiar with the music, choreography, subject and history of the piece and its principles. However, the music itself for 4+ minutes would not be easy on the audience’s ears, and it would be pretty hard for a single skater, no matter how good he/she is, to convey the story without decorations and group choreography.
It’s an Olympic year and a skater of Chen’s caliber should not risk the same reaction as Stranvinskiy received at this premier….

To include a piece from Rite of Spring into a related personal story is an excellent idea. I could see a pair or a dance team including it into a piece about Stranvinskiy’s and Chanel’s affair, that would work too. ROS on the ice, by itself, is also hard choreographically (imho).
