On our local tv tonight I saw a young woman named Katie say that her life was saved by organ donors. As a 6 year old she needed a liver. She got an organ transplant. In her adulthood she got another organ transplant. It has helped her live a normal life. She urged people to consider donating their organs. Only 10 percent people sign up for organ donations. In Arizona many have removed themselves from donor lists.

Organ donation is a wonderful thing...however. Being a registered donor can take some end-of-life decisions out of family hands. For example, we had a person in our unit who was essentially already dead on the vent, and the family had a hard time making the decision to withdraw support. They finally reached that stage, and were going to make him comfort care. Per policy, we had to notify the donor network of the change in patient status, and they said, well, he's a donor, they can't make that decision. And the patient was kept "alive" another two days while donor tried to find matches for him, on pressors, receiving blood products, the whole shebang. Against the family's wishes.

A 75 year old woman crawled for 14 hours with a broken leg to try and reach her home and find help after an accident. She made it and was able to dance with her grandson at his wedding.
