On our local tv tonight I saw a young woman named Katie say that her life was saved by organ donors. As a 6 year old she needed a liver. She got an organ transplant. In her adulthood she got another organ transplant. It has helped her live a normal life. She urged people to consider donating their organs. Only 10 percent people sign up for organ donations. In Arizona many have removed themselves from donor lists.

Organ donation is a wonderful thing...however. Being a registered donor can take some end-of-life decisions out of family hands. For example, we had a person in our unit who was essentially already dead on the vent, and the family had a hard time making the decision to withdraw support. They finally reached that stage, and were going to make him comfort care. Per policy, we had to notify the donor network of the change in patient status, and they said, well, he's a donor, they can't make that decision. And the patient was kept "alive" another two days while donor tried to find matches for him, on pressors, receiving blood products, the whole shebang. Against the family's wishes.

A 75 year old woman crawled for 14 hours with a broken leg to try and reach her home and find help after an accident. She made it and was able to dance with her grandson at his wedding.

Small town in northern Minnesota (Two Harbors) couldn’t afford a new Zamboni ($150,000). A staff person had an idea: he is a Pearl Jam fan, proposed calling it the Pearl Jamboni, and asked Pearl Jam if they could pitch in. They did, giving a “substantial amount”. The new Pearl Jamboni is now a selfie site and the kids can skate.

I keep following their journey. In all of the hurly-burly there is something very good and peaceful about this. It seems more people are meeting them and their dog, Aloka, on their journey.19 Buddhist monks and 1 dog walk for peace.
