Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

I watched "Living" last night. Bill Nighy's award nominations are certainly well deserved and Aimee Lou Wood was a great addition as well. I loved the setting of London of days gone by and the story of a man with a terminal diagnosis who breaks out of his shell at the end of his life.

The reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are coming out!

Superman 🤔

I’m seeing murmurs about how this Superman film’s “story” is a bit different than in earlier films - and particularly from the first films.

I just got back from watching Superman. Being that it's still in it's opening weekend, I'll put my review in spoiler.

Were you like me and you HATED "Man of Steel" and you were hoping that this would be an improvement? Are you a fan of James Gunn's films? Then you will enjoy this. Are you hard core about the themes of the original Superman films? Then I think that you won't like this film at all.

My overall rating for Superman is 8.6/10. It's a very good James Gunn film and a HUGE improvement over Man of Steel. If there is a sequel with James Gunn directing, I'm definitely going to watch it.

As the film begins, you're given a quick description of what's happened with Superman (David Corenswet) thirty years (landed in Kansas), three years (started his mission as a "superhuman"), three weeks (tried to stop Boravia's invasion of Jarhanpur) and three minutes (lost his first battle) ago. He lands on his Fortress of Solitude in Antarctica and his dog Krypto drags him in and he is healed. While Superman is recovering, he is being comforted by a video of his birth parents. He can't see the entire video because the latter half seems to be damaged. Superman recovers and returns to Metropolis (as Clark Kent) where he's a news reporter for The Daily Planet and is in a relationship with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), who knows Clark Kent's secret identity.

But Boravia is a strong ally of the U.S. and their military has been sold equipment by LuthorCorp. But why has their CEO Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) been selling this equipment to the Boravian military for almost nothing? Luthor is angered by Superman attempt to stop the Boravian invasion and visits the Fortress of Solitude. He kidnaps Krypto and takes the last video of Superman's parents' message to him. So Superman needs to rescue Krypto, stop Baravia's invasion of Jarhanpur, and destroy the black hole that Luthor has sent to destroy Metropolis. And he does this with the help of the "Justice Gang": Green Lantern, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl.

The Good:
1) The CGI - I'm glad they took the time and money to make the CGI not look "cartoonish".
2) Gunn does a great job of showing the "teamwork" of Superman, the Justice Gang, the reporters at The Daily Planet, and Krypto.
3) Krypto. This was the best dog ever in a superhero film.
4) Hoult did a GREAT job of showing how Lex Luthor as a slick and evil man.
5) The "what actually makes you good" talk between Superman and his "adoptive" father. ☺️
6) The length of the film - it's a little over two hours long.
7) If you like corny, you'll like A LOT in this film.

The MEH:
1) The Score. This is probably the worst thing about this film. This Murphy/Fleming version is pitiful compared to the John Williams' version.
2) So, Lois Lane knows that her boyfriend Clark Kent is Superman. But we have no idea when or how she found out.
3) "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" is not mentioned AT ALL in this film. Superman wants to do good for the people in the world and isn't automatically aligned to "just" the United States. If you are a hardcore fan of the Christopher Reeve Superman's "story", then you probably won't like this. It didn't bother me, though.
4) NITPICK: This film is rated PG-13. But there's a scene where Lex Luthor is interrogating Superman and Lex "executes” one of Superman's fans. Wouldn't this have normally made a film rated R?

During the credits, there is a cute shot of Superman and Krypto. After the credits, there's a a humorous moment between Superman and Mister Terrific as they survey some damage in Metropolis.

I have seen mixed reviews about Superman but it is my birthday this week. I have the day off work and usually have a massage, see a movie, have a nice lunch or dinner and eat some cake. So this might be just the kind of movie to see. Or maybe I might see two depending on my mood.

Well as much as I hate to admit it Superman had one of the best opening so far this year. Better than Marvel’s two offerings. Plus most DC movies don’t do too well anyway but this one seems to be doing just fine.

Why are people not going to see the movie? And why are they calling it woke because he’s not born in the USA?

This is the sh*t the Republicans worry about and think about?
Yes, this is actually the sh*t certain conservatives worry about. The rest who are complaining are grifters. And of course, a lot don't care but we don't hear from them; because they don't care.

What cracks me up is that this has always been Superman's story. He came here from another planet and tries to adjust and assimilate and wants to do good for his new country. Some of these people are acting like we "libs" changed the story just to be "woke." Um, okay. 🤡

So this is what I wonder: Do these complainers not know Superman's story and are honestly surprised? Or is it fake outrage? (There is a lot of fake outrage in certain online communities. It's very, very profitable.)

Watched Sinners and Conclave. I thought Sinners was a lot of fun. The cast was uniformly excellent.

Conclave was okay. As someone who didn’t care about the real life version, the movie did not make me feel I missed out on anything.

Saw Jurassic World Rebirth this weekend. I mainly wanted to go to scratch my Jonathan Bailey itch, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the whole cast. ScarJo slipped comfortably into her old "female action hero" shoes, without making it feel like a retread. And the bad guy met a fitting end. I would recommend it.

Superman is literally from another world. This viewpoint about his alien origins being a "woke" take on the franchise is just.. baffling.

I thought the issue was they changed "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" to encompass the world.
Just to be clear, I thought the main complaint for those complaining about how "woke" the Superman movie is was that they changed this. I'm glad they changed it to be more inclusive, as Start Trek did with their opening line.
