Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

The interesting thing is that the movie is doing well domestically but not so great internationally. All this talk about it being too “woke”, but maybe Superman is too American?

It's still baffling to me that certain people would be all up in arms about Superman being woke just because they decided to change his tag line. (And don't even get me started on the term "woke." It's deeply offensive to me in and of itself. But that's a completely different discussion.) I guess I'm just not understanding where this tempest in a teacup came from. It's an alien concept to me. LOL.

Same. There is just so much I can't wrap my head around and understand.

The thing is Truth, Justice and the American Way wasn't even originally Superman's catchphrase. It was just truth and justice originally on the Superman radio serial that started in the late 30's, they added the American Way part during WW2 for propaganda reasons and brought it back for the George Reeves show in the 50's for the same reason. It was kind of in and out of the various Superman things until the movie came out where Clark mentions in the movie to Lois that he fights for truth, justice and the American way but it didn't show up in comics again until the 90's. Smallville and Superman Returns didn't use it, though Smallville has Clark saying truth, justice and other stuff at one point. In the comics Superman renounces his US citizenship in 2011 because "truth, justice the American way isn't enough anymore" and he wants to make a bigger commitment to the planet at large. Superman and Lois on the CW referenced the catchphrase but didn't use it. DC officially changed Superman's catchphrase to "Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow" a few years ago which puts Superman closer to the original vision Siegel and Shuster had for him when they created the character.

Based on the comments here I did go and see Superman today. I enjoyed it. I felt it was much better than the Henry Cavill movies (they were just way too dark even though Cavill was :swoon:). I did like the dog (almost the canine version of the goats from Thor). David Corenswet who I thought was very good reminded me a bit of Christopher Reeves in his voice and Nicholas Hoult was suitably psycho as Lex Luthor. The action scenes were pretty exciting. So overall I was glad I saw it and came away satisfied with my movie experience. :)

I saw two movies recently: Superman and Sorry, Baby. I thought Superman was fun overall and David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan had a really nice chemistry. I actually would have liked more scenes between them and wish the film kind of leaned into a a bit of the romantic comedy element that was in the Donner film. I thought Nicholas Hoult was a really good Lex and loved his unabashed hater-ism and Edi Gathegi was great as well. I do think there were way too many characters which often made the plot quite messy and some of the editing took away from some of the more potentially powerful moments but ultimately it was a fun summer movie. I also enjoyed how John Williams’s classic score was used.

Sorry, Baby is a smaller, independent film and a debut from writer/director Eva Victor. It was a moving film about the impact of past trauma featuring a beautiful friendship between the two characters played by Eva Victor and Naomi Ackie. The film does meander at some points but overall it is worth watching.

I will see Superman before Sovereigns because the latter is not running anywhere near me. I hope I can see it next week though because after that I will be away for three weeks.

Since I can't go out to see movies anymore, I have to wait until they're on HBO, Cinemax, STARZ or Peacock. I imagine several have already seen this movie, but if you haven't, I suggest watching it. I love mysteries, thrillers, and this movie was all of that plus more.

If you have Peacock, then you probably received an email about the movie. It's awesome.

Just got back home from watching Eddington. Because it is still in its opening weekend, I will put my review in spoiler.

Unless you are wanting to watch a hysterically executed dystopian film about a small American town in the summer of 2020, I would recommend skipping this.

I give this film a 5.0/10. Eddington is visually shot well and is mostly acted as well as it could given the script and entire plot. But there are too many problems and the film is just not good.

The film is a story of what happens in the small town of Eddington, New Mexico during the pandemic and civil unrest of 2020. Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) is the sheriff who live with his wife (Emma Stone) and mother in law (Deidre O’Connell). He decides to run for mayor after getting angry at the policies that Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) has implemented in response to the pandemic. And then civil unrest starts happening in the town as a reaction to what happened to George Floyd. It leads to a confrontation that transforms Sheriff Cross into something sinister. But an outside force is also coming in……

What’s bad:
1) All of the doom-scrolling, activism, and protesting just turned into making caricatures - of every point of view possible.
2) This is Pedro Pascal’s lamest role this year. Which is a lot considering he’s in 827,491 things this year. But Fantastic Four is coming out next week so who knows?
3) The whole story with cult leader Vernon (Austin Butler) just looked haphazardly placed there.
4) Eddington, NM had a supposed population of ~2,600. Small towns aren’t just mostly empty streets with sometimes a couple of people walking around. Does Ari Aster understand what small towns are actually like? At all? 😒
5) The entire final epilogue sequence was just too odd. Especially with the mother in law and nurse. 🤨

I saw it know what you did last summer.

It was just ok but not sure why it exists? So much of the stuff (not the actual kills but the story) is almost an exact copy of the first one and the end really sucked. Very divisive for IKWYDLS fans.

Just watched The Wedding Banquet. It’s been a long time since I have seen the Ang Lee movies—I liked it but never thought it was a masterpiece or anything like that. Of his earlier stuff, Eat Drink Man Woman is his true highlight.

I like this modern take, but wished it had more comedic moments. Everyone was good to different degrees, but Joan Chen and Youn Yuh-jung are fantastic.

I want an ensemble of veteran female Asian led movie where they drink wine.
