U.S. Women [#8]: Meet Me in St. Louis

Not something I'd ever do, but it looks much better than the first version.
When I saw the pictures I was thinking how much better it looked (I wouldn’t do it, I can only imagine the up keep) but it is a vast improvement. She clearly went to someone who was very skilled with hair color this time. I’ll be interested to see how it looks pulled up in a pony tail.

I like it - it does seem to suit her and she will be relevant to her generation.

Ashley said yesterday that she couldn't believe she had heard a skater say "hoes on their toes" in female skater press conference. It was not done.

I'll bet that Alysa's sponsors are perfectly happy with the hair.

There are around 2000 teens at my hotel. I have spotted several girls with Alysa hair. I will be curious if it grows after the Olympics (but also hope not to be surrounded by 2000 teens again in the near future).
Maybe. Halos and especially fun hair coloring (including whiter) with Asian hair is already pretty popular, only in part because of KPOP artists. I've seen someone with maroon halos. I like Alysa's better.

The updated look today is much better than whatever it was she had going on earlier in the week. Going with the super-white blonde is a good choice versus the gold she had before (in some lighting conditions, the gold had some green undertones which made it look even worse). I like it. I wouldn't do that to my hair, but I'm not a Gen Zer, lol.

And we have our Women's Selection Pools for the Olympics (I mean, duh, but yeah...), Worlds, 4CCs and Jr Worlds!

ITA. I think she and Ilia and their styles can appeal to younger generations. Times are changing, and Alysa does keep the hoes (and bros) on their toes. Ashley said yesterday that she couldn't believe she had heard a skater say "hoes on their toes" in female skater press conference. It was not done.
It was in fact Isabeau who said of Alysa "she keeps the hoes on their toes" at the post-short program press conference in response to a question about a quality that each skater admires about the other skaters.

Link to press conference from the point of the question being asked

Yes, I know it was Isabeau. I linked to the short program press conference in this very thread and then I linked to a fun edited version that includes her comment about keeping the hoes on their toes. Once again, I highly recommend the press conference to people. It is very entertaining, only partly because of that comment by Isabeau about Alysa.

Also, here's a link to the press conference from last night. Amber, as usual, was being too hard on herself. She says she's going to go back and work with her choreographer on the last half of her free program because there isn't enough time for her to get her levels in the spin and adequately set up for the loop. The three of them were going off on tangents and debates about things like hair styles (not just Alysa's) and skating movies. But, there is some discussion of skating in there.

Having watched 8 Olympic trial US Nationals, THIS year tops them all! Major kudos to both Tennell and Everhardt, who put out Olympic worthy performances and proved that they too were deserving of tickets to Milan. Too little, too late, of course, but they both have much to be proud of!

Now I'm gonna say it: US Sweep in Milan!!!

Your thoughts...

Oh yeah, it was amazing! Truly! And I was sooooo impressed by Tennell and Everhardt too, I am glad they were also shown in the repeat broadcast because they were just so, so good.

But I think the US will be top 4 plus Sakamoto in some medal position. Which is as good as possible honestly

I was surprised that my lunch group were all at least somewhat aware of the big 3 and the finals tonight. They also wanted to know about the “quad guy” and the difference between a salchow and an axel, so that was encouraging!
What would really be fun is talking about Lysacek’s axel-Sal….

I admire your enthusiasm, but no - The JPN women will have something to say about that, as may Adelya Petrosyan ....

ETA - My spidey senses tell me that if everyone skates par for the course, the final group is likely to be Amber, Kaori, Adelya, Alysa, Ami and Mone. I would say Isabeau and Jia Shin just outside of that. The first tell-tale sign of the evening is where the judging panel puts Adelya if healthy but still skating 2d in the SP. Is she to be low-balled? And which 3A will young Ami muck up, SP or LP, or does Amber whiff on hers. I hope not. Any of those would let a consistent Isabeau into the final group, JMHO.

I really hope that the media doesn't start putting that out there and adding to the hype and the pressure these women must already feel.

In the press conference, they were asked about medals. After Alysa and Isabeau tried to avoid talking medals, Alysa made a quip about the three of them all being on the podium and Amber quickly brought up how strong the Japanese skaters are and said that there was a good chance that at least one of the Americans would medal.

When it comes to the Japanese skaters, it's not just about Kaori. Mone medaled at Worlds last year and finished ahead of both Isabeau and Amber. Granted, Amber did not skate her best and Isabeau was not 100% coming back from her injury. However, I think the judges and callers love Mone and she has a good chance of medaling, especially since she is generally quite consistent. Then add Ami and her triple axel to the mix. The judges have shown that they are willing to give her really high PCS when she lands her triple axel.

Putting aside inflated Nationals scores, Kaori has the highest season's best. Ami's season's best also is higher than all the Americans' season's best. Mone's is higher than both Amber's and Isabeau's. You can debate whether the scoring has been fair, but that's how the judges have been seeing it.

And this doesn't even take into account the Korean and European skaters who could do well.

So, I think the odds of an American sweep are slim. Although part of me would like to see a sweep, part of me would be very sad for Kaori because I think the only way the Americans would sweep is if Kaori skates quite poorly and I wouldn't want to see her do that.

Those of us who have ubered Kaori for years are quite relaxed about the women in the Oly. If she wins the gold in Milan, yay! If one of the Americans does, yay! (I don’t think Mone or Ami will take gold, although they could well medal.)

I will only be sad if someone else, especially Adelya, somehow wins the gold. I’ve nothing against her personally but the last thing the women’s field needs is another victory for an Eteri serf, uh, skater.

Ashley and Gracie were clearly not friendly. I don’t know how Karen, Mariah and Bradie got along in their day, they all seemed very nice but that’s part of the ice princess requirement.

When someone is described as super-competitive (like Sarah last night) I assume that’s code for the “I’m not here to make friends” behavior you see in reality shows.
I thought I heard a snark in agreement come from Tara when their non-rivalry was brought up and JW mentioned that it didn't used to be like that among the women. I immediately thought of MK and it made me wonder why, if indeed she did snark ...

Has the team officially been announced yet?
Nope. We're being forced to tune into the 2 hour "Making the Team" gala where they'll announce the team through drips & drabs over the course of two hours. It starts in 12 minutes.

I am absolutely thrilled with this women's Olympic team. So well deserved. It's probably my favorite American women's Olympic team ever. I love watching each of them skate and for different reasons. And, as an added bonus, they are fun to watch off the ice, too. It's wonderful seeing them so happy to be named to the team.

I hope that Bradie is taking pride in how hard she fought to come back from her injuries and skate so well this season. I'm happy that she at least has had an Olympic experience of her own, though I know she wanted another one.

Congratulations to Amber Glenn, Alysa Liu, and Isabeau Levito for being named onto the Olympic team. All three women have worked so incredibly hard to emblazon their names into the history books. I cannot believe that I have watched Isabeau since she was at the intermediate level. Now, she is an Olympian. We have all watched them grow up, go through their peaks and valleys, and make it out on top. This is an incredible and exciting trio of women and I hope they have the most fun at the Olympics.
