Keeping Track of Criminal Cases & SafeSport Suspensions in Skating

I am appalled. Having talent should never be considered as an excuse for poor (and in this case illegal) behaviour. Yet another example of the how much sporting prowess is valued in Australia. This is not an isolated example of sports people being treated favourably in comparison to others, and at the expense of victims.

“While the tribunal accepted his sexual relationship with the girl was objectively inappropriate and unlawful and that he remained insensitive to that fact - it found he was unlikely to repeat the same behavior again.” Seriously this is disgusting. He should be banned for life.

Truly can’t get over how insane their reasoning is here. This is literally just “idk, he said he won’t do it again and we want to believe him, so let’s roll the dice and hope for the best.” Except that the dice are children and statistically there’s no good reason to think he won’t continue preying on them, especially since he just got a free pass on it.

What about the rape accusation they've no doubt been made aware of at some point- do they figure he won't repeat that behavior again as well?

I bet it works for him
I bet it does too. And I do think people will hire him if he has had successful students in the past. People hired Richard Callaghan after all.

The latest Broken Ice is actually about problems with governance issues with responding to abuse in Canadian Sports

Short summary
Dr. Whitney Bragagnolo’s research reveals a governance crisis in Canadian sport, where a lack of oversight and accountability has led to a culture of misconduct and abuse. Despite billions in public funding, the system lacks independent audits, professionalized governance roles, and enforceable safety standards. Bragagnolo argues that true reform requires a comprehensive assessment of governance gaps and the establishment of independent oversight, professionalized integrity roles, and public accountability.

Was it only competitors who had to have agreed for it to apply retroactively?

I don't think coaches have to sign the same sort of acknowledgement of the code of conduct that competitive skaters do. IIRC they have to sign some sort of acknowledgement/agreement, but it's worded differently to reflect the coaches' role and responsibilities.

Solene Mazingue and Olivia Oliver were guests on the Future of Figure Skating podcast and spoke about their experiences since coming forward with their sexual assault accusations.

Lori Ward has a new interview with Olivia Oliver about her frustrating experience trying to get Skate Canada to take her assault seriously.

Wow....that is horrible that they wouldn't at least try to ban the jerk from attending Worlds in Montreal and it sounds like he might have had backstage access as well? :(

Wouldn't have been that hard to keep him out of the building.

HUGE props to Paul and Islam for helping her to get justice through the courts by helping her get the evidence and support she needed early. Her Italian coaches also seem to have tried to do the right thing, but didn't know the system. And props to her partner for confronting the culprit and getting him away.

Olivia is extremely brave and I'm happy that while SC has treated her terribly that she has support from those around her.

I can't help but think how fortunate it was not only that Olivia had people in her corner who obviously had years of experience dealing with the ins and outs of Skate Canada, but also that Alex by this point was working in law. I wish more of these victims had someone legal-minded on their side who could steer them toward justice, and support them, beyond what little any fed or Safe Sport org will apparently offer.
