Carreira/Ponomarenko Need a Cheer Thread

At this point, I think the low-balling of their scores in the RD is going to mess with their heads if they keep it. They really do need to go back to IAM-O and just come up with an entirely different approach to the RD if they want to have any chance of getting on the Olympic team.

But here's the question, what would they really do? The theme is ridiculous. They chose something they liked but the judges apparently don't like their choices this year. Could it just be a case of terrible timing? To be fair though, their Stevie Nicks RD and Perfume FD, were on a whole other level in comparison to this season's material. The judges could just be disappointed, as some of us were at the start of the season.

Honestly, I think they'd be better going with bubblegum pop or even '90s country. The theme is definitely ridiculous and has hampered a lot of teams' creativity, but this program isn't really setting them apart from the rest of the pack. They could KILL it with a '90s country diva RD featuring some combination of Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Jo Dee Messina, Terri Clark, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Loveless, Pam Tillis, etc. I was playing around with a bunch of different '90s country songs that meet the 120+ bpm requirement and came up with a combination of Patty Loveless' "I Try to Think About Elvis", Shania Twain's "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" and Terri Clark's "Better Things to Do" that would be a fun, cheeky combination with a strong female character arc which would suit Christina very well - and it would be at least interesting to see Anthony portraying a sweet-talking cheatin' boyfriend who gets booted to the curb at the end of the dance.

Ha, I spent the offseason imagining a two-step style RD with "No One Needs to Know" (BPM of 134-135!).
I like all these ideas, but's who's to say, the feedback wouldn't be, not contemporary enough. I really like the country idea, but do we notice no other team really has that vibe going? This ID season is like watching a giant python suck the life out of its prey. It just is what it is. We'll enjoy their skating, not worry about placement and hope for better as the season progresses.

There are junior teams who went with a '90s country RD, so it definitely isn't against any of the rules as laid out by the IDTC. They said they wanted social/club dances of the '90s and there's nothing that screams '90s club (well, country music club/bar, lol) like country line dancing, IMO.

Interesting. Hmm. But not a single senior team? Suspicious, IMHO.

After some deep thought, I think they should go full Weezer. Buddy Holly is 121 bpm. Weezer has had a resurgence amongst the youths lately (as evidenced by my son going to their concert and also Olivia Rodrigo had them up on stage with her recently and released a single of that this week which i 100% bought lol). Also Weezer would fit their quiet theater kids who turn up the drama when performing aesthetic. Plus if there were any questions about the dance party-ness I could assure all of them this was played at literally every party/dance I went to when it came out.

I’m not sure changing the RD is realistic at this point. They’ve already had to change their FD. Which, although they’ve put a good face on it, has to have been hugely distracting, not to mention discouraging.

Anthony said yesterday that they’ve put “lots and lots of hours” the past 2 weeks into reworking the middle section of the FD. Maybe the simplest explanation here is that, with that going on, they just didn’t have as much time to practice the RD coming into this event.

I’m no turns teknik, but watching the RD again several times, it just seems like they didn’t have the depth of edges in the PSt that some of the other top 5 managed, and they seemed to be skating more on flats/shallow edges. There were also some moments when they seemed to lack flow/sureness. This could be a result of less practice time or maybe just feeling a bit stiff and not “on” yesterday.

My thought is they’re going for a somewhat more subtle/flirty/dancey approach with this program. It’s not a hit like their last 2 RDs, but I think it’s okay? I like the second half more than the first half. I think maybe just focus on performing it more strongly.

I think all we can hope for (aside from a passport) is that they do what they are so capable of - showing up at nationals and be undeniable. I agree that this RD shouldn't change - I think it's too late and too risky. Instead they can rework it some more - maybe work with Randi Strong who took the Stevie Nicks RD to a point where the judges totally went with it. Maybe new costumes for both of them - I would love them to explore 90s clubbing outfits more and lean into the feeling more. And of course, work that technical like we all know they can. I'm concerned but have total faith in them. Not so much the judges mind you.

And - if they don't get to Milan? It's going to be a pretty weak Olympics anyway with the most embarrassing RD theme for the global stage. Onwards!

I don't really think it's realistic to change at this point I'm just coping with the pain lol

I also think their rd is ok, but also I am afraid they are going to get into their head about this rd now. I think they need to do at least some kind of subtle change or something to make it feel fresher to them so that they don't feel like they are doing the same thing they have not been rewarded for.

One thing I will say is that I don't think this is the USFS dumping them. The US judge had them 3rd in the RD and close to LajLag for 2nd. This is about the rest of that panel (aside from AZE) doing their level best to dump them, but that's been happening to almost all the US dance teams this season save ZingKol. And, at this rate, I'm not sure it won't happen to ZingKol next week. It's looking like a coordinated attack to knock US ice dance down a peg or two and I'm wondering if there are just a bunch of feds pissed that the USA nearly maxed out on the GP (17 of 18 potential spots) in ice dance this season.

It's not quite the right bpm (116) but I still maintain that I'd looove to see them do a Smooth by Santana programme. Probably not "dance" enough for this loser set of tasteless judges.

Yeah Ill be interested to see what they do with ZK next week - SD had mistakes in China (without would've been close) and DS have been on the up too. Plus - with judges feedback who knows how the Shibs will look.
