The 2024-25 Awards Season Thread

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture: Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez.

So, I guess she’s sweeping as well……

Although, I wondered if the SAG voters were more likely to go with Ariana Grande (Wicked). Never mind.

Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture: CONCLAVE!!!!!!!

I have no idea who’s winning Best Picture now: The Brutalist, Anora, or Conclave!

😱 😳 😆 🍿 🤩 🤓 🙃

I thought the cast in Conclave was great. I just didn't expect them to win because they haven't been winning much.

Conclave won BAFTA and has swept the Adapted Screenplay awards.

Remember, Argo won Best Picture without being nominated for Best Director. So did CODA. I believe Argo and CODA also won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar.

So……this has happened before.

I’m still not over Conclave getting snubbed for Cinematography……over Emilia Pérez. 😒

Tonight's whole ceremony was 2 hours and 15 minutes. The Oscar's will probably drag out for 3-and-a-half hours.
For a short list of nominees they really should finish it faster. Oscars drag too much; so boring! I didn’t even watch the Oscars for a couple of years.

I meant acting wins. The SAG awards is all about acting, and this was an ensemble award.

Best Lead Actor in a Motion Picture: Timothée Chalamet, A Complete Unknown

TIMMY NOW HAS A CHANCE, Y’ALL!!!! 😆 🍿

I knew he will win this, but my favorites still are Brody and Fiennes.

OT- Why is my ipad spelling words the British way today? I didn’t change anything. Now I have to correct the spellings of certain words every time I type them (favourite to favorite, colour to color, etc.
So annoying. I Need to go back to check if iPad changed my language.

ETA- Checked just now. It is showing English and United States. Makes no sense. It’s just more work for me.

Is this show moving at snail’s pace? I am not seeing any updates on YouTube either.

I may just read the winners’ list later.
Netflix has uploaded a bunch (possibly all? I haven't checked for everything I just wanted to watch Jessica Gunning's speech again) of the speeches onto YouTube if you, or anyone else who maybe missed the show because they don't have Netflix, would like to watch the speeches at least.
Best Lead Actress in a Motion Picture: Demi Moore, The Substance

So…..is it going to be Demi or Mikey for the Oscar? 🤔

I think Fernanda Torres’ chances are likely done.
I am inclined to agree, unless Madison and Moore cancel each other out which doesn't usually happen.

Now, I’m starting to wonder if I should get HBO and/or Apple TV. Hacks, Shrinking, Slow Horses, The Penguin…🤔

Problem is, I already don’t have enough time to watch what I want on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and YouTube TV. 😆
Apple often has 3 months free offers. I got 6 months with my new phone, canceled and now 6 months later got offered another 3 months.

This is a good site to check monthly:

I started to watch it, but it was incredibly violent. Does it get less violent after the first episode?

It’s pretty violent but not gratuitously-it reflects the medieval culture. I’m the most squeamish person I know and I left the room a few times. But the series was breathtaking and well worth watching, sez I who usually avoid violence.

Best Lead Actor in a Motion Picture: Timothée Chalamet, A Complete Unknown

TIMMY NOW HAS A CHANCE, Y’ALL!!!! 😆 🍿

I think he will win the Oscar, like Gwyneth P. and Jennifer L.- the youth movement. When they won the SAG, it became obvious that they would win the Oscar.

I had wondered if SAG may give it to Fiennes to honor his work over the years, but it seems they want to give the Oscar to the young actor who played a real life character. Oscar loves awarding actors who play real people. Tim has been an excellent actor in many movies already.

This makes me wonder if Mikey may win over Demi?
I don’t think the winners will all be young. There will be a mixture.

I believe that Adrien Brody deserves the Oscar for what I believe is one of the best ever performances by an actor, but he will not get it. It will be like Cate Blanchett not getting it couple years ago for a performance that should have won. In both cases the winners had also done very well but sometimes there are performances that surpass even those.

I will be quite happy if Ralph Fiennes wins the Oscar but it is highly unlikely, though he did win BAFTA.

It seems the only suspense at Oscars will be who wins (my guess in brackets - it doesnt mean I agree with these).

BP (Anora)
Director (Brutalist)
Best lead actor (A complete unknown)

I don’t understand the fascination with Anora. Well developed story, but not really a BP Oscar movie. It may even win the Directors award (heaven forbid).

All other major categories are pretty much set.

I would love to see The Brutalist win Cinematography, Conclave adapted screenplay, and a toss up between these two for editing.

I think this week can squeeze in the two movies on my list.

I’m still here (the trailer got me interested)- going to see it in Scottsdale.

Flow (I heard it’s good, and I can see it in a theatre near me)

Going to finally see "Nickel Boys" on Friday, and that will be my last "Best Picture" nominated movie for this year. As far as I can tell, it NEVER made it to Reno until this week's Oscar festival showings, and even then, there's only like 4 showings among two theaters.

DH saw I’m Still Here yesterday and thought it was excellent.

And ITA Cate wuzrobbed for Tar.

SAG clearly didn’t like The Brutalist given the limited nominations and I believe the same actors only represent less than a quarter of the Academy voters, so I’m not confident a Timothée win at SAG closes the door on a Brody Oscar win.

I haven't seen any of the movies, but I'm wondering if the AI discourse around The Bruatlist hurt Adrien. From what I've read, the only way AI was used is to slightly fix the pronunciation of a particular vowel sound in some Hungarian words, so all in all it's a bit of a nothingburger, but Timmy's win here (his first major win IIRC) makes things interesting. If Timmy wins the Oscars, he will surpass Adrien as the youngest best actor winner by a few months. Reading an article about its usage, apparently AI was also used in parts of A Complete Unknown, Dune Part 2, and Emilia Perez, though those aren't being spoken about.

I think Conclave will win best picture. People online have been joking lately that with Pope Francis' health issues, the Conclave producers are going all out with the Oscars campaign this year lol. But I do actually think that the potential for a real conclave to happen soon may be bringing more people to watch the film, and may have had some sway on the last minute voters.

Related to Conclave, I cannot believe that last night's ensemble win is the first ever SAG that Ralph Fiennes has won.

Right now, I would still give the advantage to Brody. And if Chalamet doesn’t win on Sunday, I’m not sure that “Marty Supreme” is going to be the role he’ll win with next season.

Who I think the AI discussion has probably hurt the most is Brady Corbet. I don’t think The Brutalist will win Best Picture if Corbet isn’t also winning Best Director.

Right now, I have The Brutalist winning Best Actor, Cinematography, and Score.

I think Conclave will win best picture.

Watch for what happens with Best Editing. If Conclave wins Best Editing, it’s also likely winning Best Picture. It’s already a probable lock for Best Adapted Screenplay.

As far as Anora is concerned, Sean Baker is either winning zero, two, or three Oscars. I don’t think he’s winning Editing. Editing is probably either going to Conclave or Wicked. Director is going to either Baker or Corbet. Original Screenplay is either going to Baker or Eisenberg (A Real Pain).
