Carreira/Ponomarenko Need a Cheer Thread

No kidding. Those scores are no joke. I just went back and looked at their Challenger and GP scores from last season - this week was significantly higher. LopBri, ReedAmbru, TurkVer and FBSoer had better have some damn good material because CarPon can beat them at their GPs with this kind of a trajectory.

We'll have to see what LopBri and FBSoer can score, relative to GuiFab, at Shanghai Trophy in a couple weeks, but this is very, very promising for potentially qualifying for the GPF. It won't be easy, but there's a path.
its been a dream of mine that they beat fb/s and qualify to the grand prix final. hope this is finally their season

So, a few people have commented in the Nebelhorn pbp thread about Anthony's uniform and I'm going to copy & paste my thoughts here...

I'm indifferent to Anthony's costume. It does not flatter him, however it does not NOT flatter him. It's just sort of there. I think they're aiming for a generic "soldier" vibe but they'd be better off with something that seems a bit more realistic.

I'd suggest something more along the lines of #3 or #4 in this colored sketch.

This page has a bunch of colored sketches of the Spanish Romana Division uniforms from the 19th century - https://www.napoleon-series.org/military-info/organization/Spain/c_Suhrspanish.html
This one is more generic for all of the Spanish Dragoon Regiments - https://www.littlewars.se/spanish/dragoons.html

And this one is about the Spanish military uniforms from the Peninsular Wars - https://balagan.info/spanish-units-at-the-battle-of-albuera

Surely Mathieu Caron could have found some inspiration and done more than what they did for Anthony. Hopefully they are working on something better for the GP.

I definitely think that his costume needs to speak to hers a bit more - black and red would be good and in more of the style so they feel cohesive. I have to say though, I think it's now 'trendy' to bash him a bit because of Christina's huge improvements but I felt his skating this weekend was perhaps some of his best in a while. Aside from the L4 one step (first of anyone this season so far) - he was so steady on his edges in the curve lift. I think he's worked super hard this summer.

There is a skating coach who leaves rude comments under any video of them on YouTube and he made comments about him 'not being in shape' which is a) not true but b) it's 2024 so why are we still commenting on skater's physical appearance? It's beyond gross. And from a skating coach as well - vile. As Olivia Smart said in her instagram video - they see all these comments.

For my sins I was listening to TSL while cleaning and you know how you can tell a team is doing well? TSL make up lame excuses as to why they don't like them. In saying that, they've never a had a nice word to say about them so there we go.

Anyway, I've rewatched Carmen a couple of times and I think what isn't working for me is the music change after the spin and the fact that they do the step sequence to the same piece that Tessa and Scott did. I think they could maybe instead use Fortune - it still brings the crescendo drama but in a different way. I think if they finish on a different note too it would help. This is not to say what they have is bad, I just think they could make changes to have a totally new Carmen that people will not associate with Tessa and Scott.

Well, I don't associate it with Virtue/Moir - mostly because I was never a hardcore fan of VirMoir and don't know their programs inside & out, lol.

But, yes, DL is very transparent in who he likes and dislikes and, for whatever reason, he has not ever liked, does not like, nor ever will like CarPon. I'm guessing that they rebuffed him early on in their senior career and he's been a hater ever since as that's usually what triggers his irrational, nonsensical hatred of any team in particular.

I've been having fun talking with people on tumblr and we've really honed in on the real ice dance complexity in these programs. Like that high Kilian hold is killer (I had to do the Hickory Hoedown in that hold once and literally thought I was going to die so), and foxtrot hold is one of the harder holds too. They are doing both. I hope these scores continue to go up and show that real, true ice dance will be rewarded.

Right?? It might be because I was never a huge fan of them either but this carmen feels so different and far from vm's carmen. i dont know why some people think the opposite.
As for tsl, well haters will hate so who cares.
And I don't really mind the music cuts tbh I'm such a fan of the whole thing. My only problem is that they need a little bit more of training because it has some sloppy moments but it's only September sooo

I do think this feels different, but I just think that some people and perhaps some judges are incapable of separating and associating and so they need to do all they can to avoid it.

My two cents as someone whose absolute fave V/M program was Carmen. And is still the best Carmen to date. I actually think Scott and team did a decent job of giving C/P their own version. They can't do it the way V/M did it, just not possible, and I appreciate that they didn't try. Now there are moments in the music edit where I can still recall the choreography V/M did. And there are little nods here and there in some of the movements. Unavoidable when the previous interpretation was so spot on you do a disservice to your skaters to avoid it and disadvantage them.

But I watched the program and my impression at the end was "well done" . They gave C/P a Carmen that plays to their strengths and builds on what they learned with their programs last season. When I see choreography by Guillaume or Chris Dean I always feel that they are choreographing for themselves and not the skaters, the programs they create I always watch and think " that's P/C program or that's a T/D program". So kudos to Scott, Maddie and Adrian and whoever else was involved and put the skaters first and made a decent Carmen for how C/P skate and emote. It was a risk but I think it paid off for them.

A soldier in see-through material? No way. He needs a costume in dark normal fabric.

CarrPon’s Carmen FD is fine…but, to me, no dancers come close to the sharpness of Bestemianova/Bukin in 1985…especially the carrying steps at 1:06 minute…then the footwork at 3:37…POW! most amazing use of the menacing Carmen music:

Hey guys do you know when is christina supposed to get her citizenship? Milano is 500 days from now
Kristina: I think we can expect good news soon. They are promising that I will receive my passport next year: in the summer, at the latest – in the fall. My lawyers say there’s nothing to worry about – there shouldn’t be any problems with the Olympics. But I swear, when I get my passport, I’m going to cry for a whole day.

Anthony: I want to emphasize what this means for Kristina. Every day, she travels more than an hour from the U.S. to Canada – to the rink. And in the evening, she travels back. The thing is, we train in Ontario, Canada, but for her to obtain citizenship, Kristina is required to live in the U.S. Sometimes I travel with her, and honestly, I’m amazed at how she does it on a daily basis.

Here’s video of Kaitlin promoting Nationals in Wichita:
lol I don't want to clog up the other thread with my nonsense but beautiful pic of cpom on the billboard behind Kaitlin advertising nats

Sure if you like a lot of forward cross cuts, posing, two foot skating, hand to hand holds and over-emoting.
The running steps were cool I’ll give you that.

I still think they are criminally underscored, but also they are in 1st place by a pretty good margin after the rhythm dance so I can't complain about that lol. Hoping everything goes great in the free dance and they get that gold.

Has anyone identified the uncredited first piece in the rhythm dance? It would seem to be some version of Little Richard's "Rip It Up" but it definitely doesn't match any I've checked out -- and the piano solo might be another song entirely, just mashed up with a line from "Rip It Up." Shazam doesn't recognize any of it.

Why are they scoring so close to Zingas and Kolesnik? What gives? Are they being punished for being a little out of shape?

Well, this week it's Bratti/Somerville and while the point spread between CarPon and the other US next-tier teams is closer than we'd like, I think we can expect their scores to rise once the GP season starts. We'll see what GreenP looks like next week and how they score, which will give us a better idea of what to expect.

So far, tbh, I'm feeling good - especially about their chances of passing ReedAmbru as Top 6 and staying ahead of the teams that finished behind them at Worlds (LopBri, TurkVer, Taschlers, DavSmo, etc).

What do you mean "a little out of shape"
Some very stupidly opinionated people (including Dave Lease on a recent TSL) have determined that Anthony is out of shape. I think it's because of his costumes - specifically where the waistband hits is at the "largest" point around his waist and it makes him look like he could do with losing a few pounds.

I don't think that's the reality for Anthony at all since his skating is looking better than ever, but I do think his costumes could use a rework to not draw the eye to his waistline. One of the issues I have with both shirts in the SP & FS is that the trim/decoration on the front of each does not extend fully below the waistband and that horizontal break only calls attention to his waistline as a result. He does seem to have a sturdier, rounder build in general and his costumes aren't really flattering him in that regard this season.

But, really, some internet people need to just STFU because this is the sort of thing that causes disordered eating and men in skating can be as susceptible as women. It wouldn't be acceptable for people to say this stuff if it was directed at Christina and it isn't okay to say it about Anthony either.

lol people do say it about Christina. I've seen her called "kind of big for an ice dancer" more than once. I actually think Anthony sways his back some when he skates, so I'm not sure anything would really look that much different on him. Either way I don't care. They are skating fantastic. If that's out of shape then that's pretty amazing.

1. Why are you watching?
2. I thought they were going to post on Patreon from now on? Did you really pay?
LMAO - at this point in the season, there isn't any skating happening on most Sundays so it's something to fill my time and listen to. And hell, no, I ain't paying for their trash. Clearly, DL realized that going Patreon-only wasn't profitable.

I’ve been seeing a lot of this narrative too - it’s disgusting. Skaters bodies are never anyone’s business but their own. The comments on YouTube for this version of the RD genuinely shocked me with how gross they were. Also regardless of what people think about them, they look super well trained and ready to go.

I think the reality is they ruffled a lot of feathers last season and people are annoyed that they’ve had success. I do think a lot of it stems from the way TSL have always been snarky about them and for whatever reason people take TSL’s views as gospel.

Who takes TSL views as gospel? They're hated on here, fsreddit, and a lot of fstwt hates them too. Obviously, they'll have their supporters, like anyone.

I think you’d be surprised at how many people watch and then absorb the same views. I also don’t think they’re as hated as you think - people love being mean they just don’t admit it.

 Again, who and how many? I'm not saying they don't have their supporters, they clearly do, some even exist on this forum, but that hardly means "people absorb their views as gospel" when many clearly don't.

And yeah people enjoy being mean, twitter is filled with them - and those same people hate TSL. You can be your own brand of mean while positioning yourselves as the paragon of kindness.

ok the real celebrating goes in here

FINALLY A CHALLENGER GOLD!!!!! literally i'm so happy for them

I hope this gives them the confidence that they have the material and the skill they need to have. They're pretty clearly tweaking some things in the fd, but I think it's going to absolutely slay when they've got it all comfy. They have time before their first gp.
