Gymnastics #24 - The Road to Paris

I just re-watched trials for both men's and women's. Bear in mind I am an old foggy. I was genuinely impressed by the reaction of several of the women - Suni and Jordan especially - to the crowd. They didn't demand from the crowd. They appreciated the crowd - clapped for them, cheered for them and blew kisses. I truly hope someone will address that aspect of competition with several of the men. Even though they are quality people, every time one of the men demands more applause from the audience it rubs me wrong. I don't think the French will like it either (arrogant Americans). The men will want to have the crowd on their side and that means showing their appreciation for the crowd - clapping for them and thanking them for support. Even blowing kisses.

Nastia Liukin’s era
The Nastia Liukin Era wasn't particularly artistic although Nastia personally had good lines and form. I mean, Patterson's gymnastics were relatively similar to Memmel's, Johnson's, Sacramone's, etc.

It's ironic that Patterson was trained by Valerie Liukin.

OTOH gymnasts like Raisman, Andrade, Memmel, etc. were ideal for making the sport measurable by clear standards because they did relatively clean execution of high level skills without a lot of "it factor" reflected in the score. (I do think Simone and Gabby do have "it factor" although I don't think they need(ed) it.)

The US lost a great opportunity when they decided to exclude Mihia Brestyan from national level coaching teams. He was the anti-Karolyi. Australia got a good one.

I just saw this fluff piece about Tim Daggett on Facebook. He got injured and could have lost his leg at the 1987 World Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam.

I opted to put it here because he sometimes is a commentator for events, but I don't remember him being at Nationals or Trials.

These athletes come back from incredible injuries in a short amount of time.

So I just debuted my new gymnastics routine last night… Comments?

Awesome and fun to watch! I would add that to my playlist of videos that inspire me to do difficult things!!

Tim had some gruesome injuries, he also broke his neck on High Bar, but wasn't paralyzed. I saw that injury once, don't need to see it again.

@bardtoob Carly was at WOGA, but she was trained by Evgeny Marchenko, not Valeri.
I didn't know about the neck injury!! 😲

The French won’t like the way the men behave. 😂.

Have you ever been to a French football game? The way the French athletes and get the crowd excited is not by blowing kisses😂

When I was in university, I had a friend who was on a gymnastics scholarship (male). He eventually had to quit because he became so scared going to the gym to try a new trick where he almost hit the mat head first but was saved by a line??? IN any event he gave up the scholarship because it freaked him out too much.

Figure skating would benefit from the training of pro soccer players who throw themselves in the air, and yet continue the performance on their face throughout the element. If you watched any of the Euros, or COPA America you would have seen their performance skills.

I was thinking that some pro soccer/football players could spend some time with some pair ladies to learn how not to be so dramatic about falling down.

I'm sure it's not :). The US among the US is very different too. In this case, though, All the other countries will be guests - and there are certain expectations from guests. At least in my old foggy world there are. I'm also bearing in mind that the gymnastics audience (even for the men) is dominated by women. Also, as others have pointed out, soccer is a whole different beast.

I think you should probably skip the games. I doubt many athletes got your behavior memo.

I'm honestly not sure where you are getting the idea that this will be anyone's expectation.

WOW that was amazing and so entertaining!!

The camp is at the World Champions, correct? I’m pretty sure that’s where Tiana lives and trains.
Yes, the camp has been at WCC but the traveling team has to go to wherever the Team USA processing center is to get their gear before they leave for Paris. For Beijing (and I think Tokyo) it was in LA but it would make more sense if it was somewhere on the East Coast this year, I'd think.

They’ve also done it outside the US in the past - a friend who lived in Germany volunteered at the US processing there - I think for Sochi.

I don’t like the hamming up the crowds neither. So I get were you are coming from. But I do not think it will be a problem 😀

I've started watching "Simone Biles Rising" on Netflix. It's making me even sadder about what she went through with the Tokyo Olympics and all the hate and criticism. And it's also making me nervous for her. I hope that, if she does start getting the twisties again, that she won't try to avoid the criticism and risk severely injuring herself by staying in. She says that, whenever she does a Yurchenko double pike, she's scared and trying not to die.

I didn't realize that Simone's mom was on camera when Simone called her from Tokyo during the team final. Her mom told her that the team would do their best without her and that she shouldn't risk hurting herself. I'd like to think that all gymnastics parents would do the same, but I don't think that's true. And I think that there might be gymnasts who would risk breaking their necks rather than withdraw.

In addition to her family and coaches, they have some interesting people appearing on camera during the show, including Betty Okino, Dominque Dawes, Svetlana Boginskaya, and Joscelyn Roberson.

Kinda feels like this year's team has at least one dad who would not do the same. :shuffle:
