2024 Athletics Thread - Road to Paris

I kind of don't get steeplechase.

I think it’s basically distance running in kinda an obstacle course.

I wonder if they will ever move the women to the full decathlon. They really only need to add the 100m, discus, pole vault, move the 200m to 400m, and the 800m to 1500m, right?

Men’s 100m final time!!! ?

He probably has to compete here to satisfy his sponsor (I’m pretty sure that one is Nike). What’s also crazy about this is that I bet Nike has it its contract with Kendricks that they will “reduce their payments” to him if he misses certain achievements like competing at global championships or competing at a certain number of competitions per year.

Kendricks, IMHO, has always come across as a “Aw shucks, I’m a douche” to me.
Worse, he’s an irresponsible anti-vaxxer. Ick.

Actually Kendricks was placed into quarantine by Japanese officials after he tested positive shortly before the pole vault competition. Kendricks according to social media accounts attended a party in Mississippi where many of the attendees were unmasked and unvaccinated.

Kendricks had recently trained with Australia’s Kurtis Marshall and three Australian track and field team members were also removed from the Olympic Village after officials learned of Kendricks positive test.

“But all of the sudden, I’m forced to do something. I’m don’t like to be forced to do anything. I’m from the South.”

DUUUDDDE, just speak for yourself. Don’t drag all of us with you.

Meanwhile, USATF may be waking up to how people feel about Eugene.

Not just Olympic trials, but U.S. Nationals in general. Flying to Eugene is logistically limiting and therefore gets expensive. And other than the University of Oregon, there’s pretty much nothing else there. I believe World Athletics head Sebastian Coe complained about how awful it was to have 2022 Worlds there.

Seriously, USATF - just pick any actual city. It’s not like the ?? isn’t a huge country with lots of great options.

thank you for this. as someone who doesn't keep up with this much outside of the Olympics, it really is maddening that us officials will just turn a blind eye to this kind of thing if they are getting the results they want.

But also it just gave me my favorite doping excuse ever:

In 1999 Mitchell was banned by the IAAF for two years after an OOC revealed test showed excessive levels of Testosterone in his urine. Mitchell unsuccessfully argued that this was caused by excessive sex with his wife. “It was her birthday, the lady deserved a treat.”
