Gymnastics News #23: Defying Gravity

Oh man, today was supposed to be my LEAST stressful day and I was a bundle of nerves for the entire event this afternoon....I hope all my work was done correctly because my attention span was definitely shot, LMAO

I am SO INSANELY proud of the US ladies for fighting so hard today after Josc's injury threw everything into a bit of chaos for a while there. I could tell that it rattled them a bit but they pulled it together overall and did pretty darn awesome. Leanne is a rockstar for stepping in so seamlessly and even though she had a mistake on her beam routine, I'm still impressed by her composure and poise overall. Skye was absolutely awesome on the UB, Shilese shined every time she took the floor today (her UB and beam were fabulous), and I don't have enough words for Simone's greatness anymore. Her FX routine to end the meet was INSANELY incredible and the perfect way to end the competition today. Wow, I'm still in awe of what I watched today and just SO proud of those ladies!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

And what do we have to do to get these exact same results in Paris next year because I freaking LOVE this women's team podium! I was rooting for Brazil to get a medal today and I was worried when they had a couple of hiccups early, but they pulled it together and got the job done after all. Flavia has been one of my sentimental faves for a while (love her on beam!), I was STOKED to see Jade competing again, and Rebeca's FX was one of my fave routines today. So ecstatic for them to finally win a team medal and their reactions were ADORABLE! I also loved seeing France get that bronze medal and honestly, seeing their reactions brought tears to my eyes. Melanie has been one of my faves for a while so seeing her celebrate both with her team and then with the WCC folks was SOOO sweet! I love all of these teams so much so this podium was like a dream come true for me, and I am rooting hard to see the same results in Paris next year! Congrats to all of the medal winning teams!! :cheer2:

It's a very old-school Soviet/Romanian thing to substitute the athlete who may have the best results for the athlete who actually qualified. The U.S. never adopted that in gymnastics, so a perspective shift is definitely required for many U.S.-based fans to wrap their heads around the "fairness" of doing this. Even in figure skating, some more old-school U.S. fans still haven't fully accepted the body-of-work thing regarding the Olympic/World team selections.

I would understand if everyone made mistakes, so they chose someone more experienced and famous. But in this case I cannot understand the reason for the replacement.

I think the two highest Japanese qualifiers should compete, no matter who they are.

"Body of work". Figure skating fans should know all about that.

I'm somewhere in the middle. Body of work does not allow figure skaters who don't qualify from the short program to replace someone else in the long program. IMO, the qualifying scores should count in some way. I see the argument for body of work for choosing who to send to Worlds, but the qualification part of the competition should actually mean qualification. I would like it to be the top two from each country as long as they otherwise qualify. No substitutions even if there is an "injury."

But, I might be okay with letting the country make a third selection after qualifications but only among their gymnasts who would have qualified if they were not third in their country. (One exception to the country being able to choose might be that, if a person qualifies in third, they get to compete in the finals regardless of what the country wants. I don't like the idea that someone can come in third in qualifying -what would be bronze medal position- and still not be able to compete in the finals.) Or, they could make it a little more selective for a third spot and say that the third person has to finish in the top 10 in qualifying or something like that.

How are Fred Richard and Asher Hong doing? And Kovtun and Sun Wei, I expected these two in the very top. So frustrating I can't watch live! :drama:

Heartbreaker for Fred, but at 19 hopefully he's got a number of years ahead of him to keep going for that podium

Yes, I think both Fred and Asher are young guys with excellent potential for the years to come. I hope we see them healthy ad battling each other and bringing it for the United States for quite some time. They'll both benefit from their experiences this week. If the American men could get a bronze medal in the team event with these two young guys, that bodes well for the future.

There were a number of young guys competing this week that I'm looking forward to seeing develop.
