True Crime thread / for Adults only

Since I live in Wichita I am not the least bit interested in seeing anything about BTK. Why relive it? I know a lot of folks in Kansas City have no interest in a series about Bob Berdella. He was vicious. I avoided Dahmer, Bundy and Gacy as well. I am interested in apprehension—the detective work is interesting. But biopics???? Blech.
 
A lot of outrage currently happening now in Canada as a result of the transfer of one of Canada's most abhorrent criminals, Paul Bernardo, within the federal prison system from a maximum security prison to a medium (open Campus) security prison. Needless to say, the families of his victims are outraged and there are calls for the Public Service Minister to be forced to resign as he knew about this planned move 3 months ago. There was never any question of his guilt - both of raping a number of young women who have likely never been the same, and his rape and murder of his wife's sister and two young innocent girls. I don't believe in cruel or inhumane treatment of even the lowest of the low but a university like campus setting?? It sounds like he did get married again and has conjugal visits which just sickens me.

I do understand the outrage, just based on his crimes and notoriety. But the the only difference between maximum security and medium security is the amount of interaction with other inmates. There's still the same amount of security, it's not like he can just walk away. He's been in prison for a long time already, presumably has behaved in a manner that being moved was a consideration, and Canada actively tries to transition prisoners out of maximum security. I mean, the optics aren't great given his crimes, and the Bernardo name understandably brings up a lot of emotion in a lot of people, but also, it seems like he's being treated like anyone else ?‍♀️ You can argue he shouldn't be, but that's not how things work currently.

Well, that is interesting and I think is not well known by Canadians. It seemed inevitable that when the families of those he victimized and the public at large learned of this change, there would be outrage. This seems similar to the reaction when Terri-Lynne McClintic was released to a healing lodge while serving a life sentence for the rape and murder of an 8 year child. There seems a disconnect between how the public see it and how Corrections Canada see it as most of us relate much more to the victims.

I agree that there is a big disconnect between public perception and how the corrections process actually works. I think this is one instance where American media really influences our perceptions. I do wish that someone (public safety minister, someone from the correctional service) would be proactive when things like this happen. And I wish politicians like Pollievre wouldn't exploit these kinds of situations and perpetuate misinformation.
 
There are thousands of people in my city who go house to house delivering food or work as nurses or support workers. I worked in the community for 15 years. This could have been anyone. Hope they find who did it.

He has been held in solitary confinement for 30 years (23 hours in his cell) one hour in the yard likely somewhat alone. He would have been murdered otherwise which would not have been a bad thing.

You can’t mention Bernardo’s name though without mentioning Karla Homolka. if they had been able to find the tapes of the rapes and tortures in time she would be doing the same time.

Bernardo is also not married - that relationship ended a long time ago and there are no conjugal visits thankfully.

My dad’s cousin prosecuted the Bernardo case. It is still one of the worst cases in Canadian history.

It was a horrible crime, and Homolka getting off is what really burns.

What @made_in_canada is right. The Corrections system in Canada works thru stages. After sentencing all inmates once incarcerated go to a Psych Centre where they are evaluated. Then they are transferred to a super max, max, med or min facility. Bernardo's life isn't pleasant. He will never make it to a minimum security facility, ever. The type of crimes he committed means he'll never be safe. Sex crimes/murders such as the ones he committed means he has a moving target on his back all the time. I don't have any sympathy for him, but he's not living at the Hilton. Now if he would have been moved to Club Fed (Kent Correctional Centre) I would have been po'd.

I agree. Prison is not pleasant at all. Apparently he’ll be in with other sex offenders.
 
I couldn’t watch Dahmer. BTK took a glance. Heater Skelter - I just couldn’t do that even when I was younger. Anything to do with cults (they freak me out), cutting up bodies, eating them etc. I’m out of there.

Interesting. But, at least in Florida, it's not uncommon for people to accidentally drive into retention ponds. They are everywhere (because of our karst topography the water they capture helps recharge the aquifer) and usually very deep.
 
First saw 10 Rillington Place decades ago. Starring John Hurt as Timothy Evans, executed in Britain 1950 for crimes he didn't commit, and Richard Attenborough as John Christie, the real culprit of those (and 6 other) murders. Gory details were more implied than explicit, and aside from the notoriety of the crimes, was a well done depiction of how an innocent man was a victim of a grave miscarriage of justice.

Here is the movie on Dailymotion, and again, the gory details are implied and not explicit: 10 Rillington Place . And there was another case where a convicted man's guilt was questionable, and his execution resulted in the end of the death penalty in Britain years later, the Christopher Craig/Derek Bently case. On a rooftop chase with the police in 1952, Craig shot and killed an officer after Bently allegedly spurred him on saying "Let him have it, Chris!" . Yet that statement could have had a different meaning, as in "Hand over the weapon to them", but Bently (more shades of Timothy Evans) who was of subnormal intelligence, could not defend himself too well in court. To complicate matters, Craig, the actual killer, because he was underaged at the time, was spared the death penalty, whereas Bently, whose complicity was questionable and did no firing, was the one executed. There is a movie shown on YouTube, but the gore in just one scene makes me refrain from giving a direct link. Just search for Let Him Have It 1991 on YouTube.

Let's face it, society has always held a morbid fascination with true crime, whether because of the gore, the 'who done it' investigations, or the question mark of the outcome (witness the countless conspiracy theories about the assassination of JFK). The Manson case had all three, plus a circus-atmosphere surrounding the trial that a fiction writer couldn't have made up. To take just one aspect: Towards the end of the trial, the People of the State of California rests. And, the Defense rests, without bothering to call a single witness! Apparently the girls wanted to take the stand and testify that they alone plotted and carried out the murders - and Manson wasn't involved. This the defense council would not allow, as one put it, it would be like aiding and abetting a suicide.
