Here's a newer article about Hocke and Kunkel that says they'd not stop, but switch countries if the funding isn't improved until October
Gotta do what you gotta do. I hope they don't need to resort to that.

Sportschau has an article about DEU: Bid for 2027 European Championships in Essen.
Guess what picture public broadcaster WDR choose: Boikova/Kozlovskii. I just don't get it. Why not choose a German figure skater? Why Russians?

Germany's first bid for the 2023 European Championships in Essen failed, with Helsinki winning the bid. As the Hartwall Arena, which was intended as the venue, is majority-owned by Russian oligarchs, this year's European championships were held in Espoo just outside the Finnish capital.

Today DEU released press statement about bid for Euros in Essen:
The German Ice Skating Union ( DEU ) submitted its application to the International Skating Union ( ISU ) in April for the European Figure Skating Championships to be held from 18 to 24. January 2027 in Essen. The application was created in cooperation between the DEU, the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Essen Youth Figure Skating Association ( EJE ).

But that's not an application or add, that's just a random news article from Tagesschau, a news publication who has absolutely nothing to do with figure skating and who are probably proud they actually found figure skaters and no speed skaters for the article or something. Personally I think it's not worth it, to get anyone to change a picture on a days old news article. Probably the editor of this article knows neither Boikova & Kozlovski nor Nicole Schott, but might have heard of Katarina Witt.

A young WDR intern probably googled figure skating and put up a random pic coming up.

Well, they have access to a photo database, so it should not have been too difficult to find some Germans. The agency (dpa) had a photo of Nicole Schott with their news report. That the tv station of the county/state where Essen belongs to wanted to publish an independent news piece and failed is a bit sad. But says a lot about the relevance of the sport here.

Judith D. interviewed Hocke/Kunkel for Golden Skate (39 mins.; uploaded May 1): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9VgINFAupM

German pair skaters Annika Hocke and Robert Kunkel are looking back on their most successful season yet. After winning two medals at the Challenger Events, the team went on to take the bronze at the Grand Prix in France. They also captured the bronze at the European Championships in Espoo and rounded out their season with a clean free skate at Worlds in Saitama, placing ninth overall.

The promising young team from Berlin has improved significantly since relocating to Bergamo, Italy, to train last summer. However, decreased funding of the German Skating Union has created a lot of challenges, not only for them, but for all German skaters. For example, they will no longer pay any expenses at Challenger Events or the costs for the coach at Grand Prix events as they have in the past.

In this interview, the German champions explain their situation and touch on possible consequences. They also talk about the state of the sport of figure Skating in Germany and express their hopes for the future. They reveal what motivates them to continue and discuss plans for the off-season and their next goals for their skating career.

AFAIK Aya Hatakawa had a stress fracture in her foot that wasn't diagnosed correctly by doctors for a long time and currently seems to be living in Japan.

From Google Translate:

Hey everyone
As you have already noticed, I am back in Chemnitz. Robin and I will start a new figure skating project together to encourage young talent. We would like to accompany you on your way to the top of figure skating and share our experiences from our active time.
We're so excited to announce that it's finally starting on May 22nd! A huge thank you goes to @chemnitzer_eislauf_club @stadt_chemnitz, who made it possible for us to train on the ice in May.
If you are interested in our project or need more information, you can write to us directly via DM. Our email address: [email protected]
We want to train with children in such a way that they have fun and enjoy themselves and, of course, also develop ambition. That is our dream - to bring figure skating in Germany forward again.
Let's have a great time on the ice together! 🙌🏽

I'm not so sure that Savchenko would recognize "have fun and enjoy themselves" if it hit her over the head, but she certainly has the "develop ambition" part down pat.

Luft/Pfisterer have ended their partnership, because Max has been dealing with injury since December. Lara's looking for a new partner. (Cross-posted from the Dance Hall thread.)
