Russian Figure Skater tests positive for drugs - delays ceremony for team medals

Since when has the athlete's ignorance of their doping been a factor in determining whether or not they are disqualified? Historically, if doping has been shown to take place, the athlete is disqualified, whether or not they knew about the doping. Even in cases where the doping has been shown to be entirely accidental, and neither coach nor athlete knew about it, athletes have been disqualified. RUSADA has created a whole new level of sophistry with this argument.

In that case, giving Andrea Raducan back her OGM, and Bereznaia/Sikharulidze back the 2000 European title. Imagine being Jessica Calalang right now?

So I haven't been following this case closely because I lost faith in the human race the last few years but I am curious about that announcement I just read that she tweeted.

So is it safe to assume RUSADA pushed out this decision now to try to push off the announcement WADA made in November that they were going straight to CAS because RUSADA was dragging their feet? And taking away her win at Russian Nationals (which they won't really do right  ) is to placate others that she has been punished and dealt with?

Pretty much

At least Jessica still has a skating career. Imagine being Laurine Lecavelier, who lost everything because she couldn't positively identify the source of an accidental contamination.

ETA: I wish I could've said that this outcome wasn't exactly the one I was expecting, but unfortunately I remain 100% unsurprised and also 100% disgusted with RUSADA.

Yes! Wasn't Laurine suspended for cocaine, which is only banned inside competition? For any athlete who was suspended, this must be so infuriating

Link to WADA's statement today:

That memo did read like WADA wasn't happy but what else can they say until after they read the report

That wasn't the impression I had reading it. I got the "mmmhmmmm... we'll see what we think when we get home and view the full scope of damage" that a parent says to a naughty child.

Are we taking bets on when this will finally be resolved?
Very much a case of "disappointed but not surprised".

No-one actually expected RUSADA to find any other way, did they?

At least WADA can now step in and take this to CAS and get it sorted out properly, but it's just another delay.
I don't think anyone is surprised. It's just frustrating.

Sorry major typo I meant wasn't happy

So do y’all think they will still be out of all ISU competitions for next season as well. How long do you think that will go on for? Just curious

I know it’s because of the Ukraine situation but wondering how long they will be excluded for.

Absolutely not. She was banned for having a trace amount of a banned substance that turned out to have been in her eyelash serum. As a result of her own investigation and her lawyer, WADA changed the rules so that other people won't be banned for having that trace amount anymore.

That last part impresses me, btw.

F*cking disgusting but what else do we expect?

I also expect WADA to shrug and say this is fine. I don't know why. That's my gut feeling--hope I am wrong.

The true medalists deserve their medals. The clean athletes deserve their medals. F*ck doping. #@$$@#$@%

I meant Laurine was banned for cocaine not Jessica. Sorry for the confusion.

Good that WADA changed that rule about trace amounts.

They shouldn't be allowed back in any competitions after the stunt they pulled in Beijing and are continuing to pull, in addition to Ukraine but I wouldn't be surprised if the IOC capitulates.

Russia should be banned for one winter and one summer Olympics extra after their ban for the Ukraine invasion for every year that RUSDA and the Russian sports agency has delayed the proper proceedings with their tactics.
Who knows how long this mess will take to clear up. Or how long the war in Ukraine will be going on for? So, just keep them out

Predictably, the Russian trolls are out in force. Russia does itself no favours by trying to gaslight people. They only make everyone more suspicious.

We're good. I'm still scratching my head about what happened with Jessica. It has to be super bad luck. What are the odds?
I don't know the odds but apparently at least one other person was caught so that's already higher than I would have guessed.

Cocaïne she was accidentally contaminated with, something French Anti-Doping agency took into account. Still she was suspended for 2 years while waiting for their decision, which, as a result, couldn't be shorter than a 2 years ban. It put an abrupt end to her career. She is very resilient and she has turned the page but still, she cringed when I told her about how Valieva's case finally turned. I'm actually more furious than her  This Valieva stuff is such a huge pile of crap and a literally glorious and beaming feck you to the rest of the skating universe.

I really have to wonder how Laura Barquero is feeling too. She's been twisting in the wind, waiting on WADA to do anything with her case for 10+ months now and doesn't even have any idea how long she might remain out of competition for a simple lip balm issue.
