Team finals is going to be exciting in a half good / half car crash kind of way. Very close for the medals, imo.

I've been following the men's qualifying round this morning
What a disaster for the US, GB and China. All equally disappointing. Switzerland seems to have bombed also and South Korea had multiple mistakes.

On the plus side, it's a real chance for gymnasts from smaller programs to shine and make EFs. I wouldn't be surprised if we find Turkey and Chinese Taipei leading the team standings at some point

ETA: in the final rotation GB managed to bomb its THREE solid chances at an EF with all three of their top vaulters bombing their second vaults. Since they all managed to stand up their first, they are sitting in the temporary first place in the team comp. China down in third is rather lucky that Russia isn't competing this year.

The only real highlight so far has been Zou's 15.7 on PB.

Japan should comfortably take the lead, but beyond that Turkey, Chinese Taipei, Germany, Brazil, Italy, France all have a chance of going clean and even pushing China out of TF

It heavily depends on the circumstances.

If you needed a sub or you thought your team ranking could improve but not drop by Jordan getting 2 more points by simply not falling, then I would have her on beam.

I wouldn't have her on the beam if there was no upside.

Meanwhile, here’s what Nina Derwael did in qualifying on bars.

It’s insane she can do all this and be so tall (5’ 7”). I do wonder if this routine was overscored a bit, though.

I much prefer Nina's routine but that was impressive.

Alice Kinsella posted a video of a promising amanar. I must admit she's constantly surprising me - I've been disappointed with the lineage of British gymnasts with strong vault potential never quite reaching their potential (including the Gadirovas) and then Alice is the one to come and pull it out of the bag.

Dead silence in the US media. It’s a pity as the Boston Globe usually does a respectable job with gymnastics. But with the NFL, NHL, NBA, and the WS going on in addition to college football, I guess there isn’t a lot of extra room in the sports section.
