RIP HM Queen Elizabeth II

I know that King Charles has advocated for a pared down royal family. Queen Elizabeth has four children who all have children. Only Charles and Andrew's children are referred to as "prince or princess". I believe Princess Ann chose not to have her children be known by that title. Prince Edward's daughter, who apparently has always held a special play in her grandparent's hearts, is known as Lady Louise Windsor. She was styled after a child of an earl, rather than a prince, with the HRH distinction. This happened under the Queen's watch so not anything new.

Here’s a step-by-step-step timeline of events leading up to the funeral.

This mentions that her coffin/remains will be flown to London next Tuesday. I’ve read elsewhere that it may be a train trip, so that people could pay their respects as the train goes by.

I don't believe Anne's children were entitled to be prince/princess as they are not male line descendants. Their father turned down an earldom, I think?

Edward was supposedly in line to be Duke of Edinburgh after his parents passed away, though that should not change how Lady Louise is styled. I assume James will then be known as Earl of Wessex rather than Viscount Severn.

I can't see anyone being stripped of titles and styles they already hold, but certainly fewer working royals and a new letters patent with fewer people entitled to be princes and princesses going forward.

The Queen offered to make her eldest grandson Peter Phillips a Prince and Anne said no.

I think many have felt Anne’s way was better for kids in their position. Grandchildren of the monarch but not of the heir allows them to forge their own path.

The people entitled to the HRH Prince/Princess title are children of the monarch and male-line grandchildren of the monarch. Plus the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales. Up until yesterday that was Charles, Anne, Andrew, Edward, William, Harry, Beatrice, Eugenie, Louise, James, and William’s three children (George, Charlotte, Louis). Plus the previous generation of the Queen’s cousins (Dukes of Kent and Gloucester, Princess Alexandra and Prince Michael of Kent, all of whose paternal grandfather was George V). As of today with their grandfather ascending to the throne, Harry’s children automatically join that list. King Charles would need to issue a new Letters Patent to change that or remove titles from those who already have them.

There has been speculation that Harry and Meghan have been told he intended to do precisely that, because otherwise their complaints during the Oprah interview and other media about Archie’s title don’t make sense. Harry would have known all along that if his children were born while the Queen was still alive they wouldn’t be princes and princesses until she died. It shouldn’t have been a surprise to him (and he should have been able to explain it to Meghan). So perhaps Charles does intend to issue a new Letters Patent removing their titles, although that does feel like it would be the nuclear option right now in terms of his relationship with H&M.

Anne’s children, as grandchildren of the female line, are not entitled to be HRHs. Any titles they would hold would have to come from their father. He was offered an earldom when he married Anne, but they declined, wanting their children to have “normal” lives. Edward’s children are entitled to be HRHs, but they choose to use “lesser” titles as children of an earl, given their increasing distance from the throne and succession and royal duties (they will never be working royals).

When Prince Philip died his title, Duke of Edinburgh, passed automatically to his eldest son, Charles. Now that Charles has become king all his titles are absorbed back into the crown, except those reserved for the heir to the throne. He can grant Edward the title Duke of Edinburgh, but it will be a new creation of the title, not an inheritance.

The queen had offered it to her.

Given that Charles has talked about slimming down the monarchy since before Harry and Meghan got married, I don't think so. What anyone would make of it should he do it is beyond his control but no one could credibly claim that it's racist or because the children are biracial or whatever else since it would have been a long time coming.

It just seems so surreal. I’d never thought of how extremely unlikely it is that any of us will live to see another Queen.
Probably not in the UK. But Denmark currently has a queen, and Sweden, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands should have queens in most of our lifetimes (and Norway for at least some FSUers).

(this assumes abdications in monarchies that have such a tradition)

What a wonderful example of duty and service she set. A well deserved rest indeed.
It was extremely unlikely that we had Queen Elizabeth II in the first place.

But yes, it would take a lot of tragedy for us to get another British Queen Monarch quickly. (And no one wants that tragedy.)

Definitely a unique experience to have such a long serving Queen.

We are fortunate to have experienced this.

I thought Queen Elizabeth had a lot more dogs, but had also heard she was getting away from “pure” Corgis, so it must be the Dachshunds that were mixed in, interesting combo to Dorgis? Of course they are all going to be taken care of, perhaps broken up to several caretakers, but they were among the Queen’s prized possessions, I am sure there are takers

It was said some years back that she was going to stop breeding/acquiring dogs, as she knew she was getting on in years and she was both concerned about tripping/falling with so many dogs under foot, and about what would happen to them after she was gone. So the numbers had reduced substantially over the last few years. I think I remember reading she did get a puppy (or two?) after Philip died. I’m sure the dogs will be well loved and cared for, and she likely made provisions for them in her will.

Pieced from 2 different articles -
"According to the American Kennel Club, she had two Pembroke Welsh corgis, Muick and Sandy, as well as an older, mixed-breed "dorgi" (("The Queen was often credited with creating the dorgi breed when her corgi mated with a dachshund owned by her sister, Princess Margaret.")) called Candy. A cocker spaniel, Lissy, reportedly joined the gang in January this year.

......Such was her attachment to Susan, she reportedly took her on her honeymoon in 1947. Susan died in January 1959.

The monarch went on to own dozens of corgis in her lifetime. One, Willow, famously appeared alongside her in the James Bond sketch that she recorded for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.
When Willow was put to sleep at the age of 14, the Queen lost the last descendant of her original corgi, Susan."

Funny, every time I hear "King Charles" I think of King Charles Spaniels. Dogs on the brain.

This is the same for Canada as well.

There is always a deadline announced for the switch. After such time, stores won’t accept the money but banks will.

It is always a 18-24 month timeframe for the changes.

Canada has decommissioned the one dollar bill, the two-dollar bill, the penny and switched from paper bills to plastic bills all in the past 25 years or so.
Hmmm that’s not my memory of it … but it was a LONG time ago too. Do you remember the year? I remember being annoyed because the coins weighed my wallet/purse down more lol.

From the Royal Canadian Mint:

A Statement from the Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint wishes to remind consumers and businesses that the royal succession has no impact on coins currently in circulation. A change in Monarch does not require the replacement of circulation coins. Therefore, Canadians consumers and businesses can continue using all coins currently in circulation.

We are working on a plan to issue a variety of coins commemorating Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s lifetime of service as Queen of Canada. The Mint will also support the Government of Canada as it works to determine a new obverse (heads) design for future Canadian coins.

More about the funeral & who’ll attend or might attend.

Images be what a diplomatic nightmare it could be, with various entourages flying in and out!

I'm glad Biden is attending.

As for the date... I'm supposed to fly back to London on the morning of 19th September :scream:. Maybe it won't be horrendous because all of the guests will have arrived on the 18th? I thought about cancelling my weekend away because I'd like to be in London for this historic event, but I can't get any refunds. I won't be sad if the flight is cancelled. Trying to change to another flight would cost me £700, and the original ticket was less than £200! (It's just a short-haul.)

It was around the time of Mr O'Connell's 30th wedding anniversary and he told Queen Elizabeth he had not been as nervous since the day he got married. She pointed to a monk fish on the ice in front of her and enquired what it was.

"In Cork, we call that the mother-in-law fish," he replied.

Queen Elizabeth threw her head back in laughter; Mr O'Connell relaxed and he laughed too.

My city - the parliament buildings in Ottawa ..

(the building is under a massive construction) but it’s still beautiful).

The National Memorial Service will be held at my parish church, Christ Church Cathedral, on the same day as the funeral. We also hosted the memorial service for Prince Philip - at that time there were lockdown conditions in place so the body of the church was empty. This time the church will be full but by invitation only.

Update on the money discussion…..my husband arrived home from a work trip to London and Brussels.

The shopkeepers in London wouldn’t take his British pounds because he had paper ones not the new plastic ones.

His colleague from Scotland who was with him on the trip said he was looking forward to letting the London shopkeepers know that they had to take his Scottish notes.

They don’t have to accept them, even if they accept cash otherwise.
