Josh Duggar ('19 Kids and Counting') Arrested by Feds

Anyone know what Jana Dugger did that she is being charged with endangering the life of a child?
I am shocked. She is IMO the least likely to do anything wrong, unexpected or risky.

Can't wait for Amy Dugger to comment. She doesn't pull any chances.

I think they purposely went with CSAM in this statement. Hard to look at your own culpability right in the face I suppose. Especially because it might force them to acknowledge the role they played in all of this. Disgusting.
CSAM?

Child endangerment covers a huge variety of things - like unsafe use of car seats. I dont think it is a good idea to speculate. Not that my opinion counts for much

I haven't seen someone charged with child endangerment for not using a car seat properly. I'm guessing it was more serious than that. My first thought was they let Josh around the kids. Because you know this family would do that.

Usually car seat stuff is combined with car accident or something. But I dont think we should speculate because it can be a wide range of things that define child endangerment charges

Well, that's not good, but if that's what it was, at least it wasn't deliberate. Unlike what big brother Josh did.

I don’t think that it had anything to do with
Josh. If it had, his bail would have been revoked and he would have been in jail until trial. This incident happened in September with no fanfare at all until after his conviction.

There is a Reddit forum about the Duggars (https://www.reddit.com/r/DuggarsSnark/) which seems to have some well-informed participants. The discussion there suggests that Jana was babysitting and she fell asleep, and while she was asleep one of the kids she was watching got out of the house, and was either playing near or running very close to a busy street.
I have heard this and it sounds more plausible, considering her bail was only $400. If she had anything to do with Josh’s mess it would be frightfully higher.

Honestly, a young child going awol while parents/caretaker are sleeping doesn't seem like the type of thing that would result in criminal charges 100% of the time. Which makes me think this has happened before or there was alcohol / medication involved in the napping or local law enforcement is DONE with this family.

FWIW there is some earlier discussion on the Reddit thread about Jana. She is the oldest Duggar daughter and still hasn't gotten married. Allegedly she was good friends with a girl from high school, and they went on some getaway "girls' weekends" together. Daddy Jim Bob (allegedly) was suspicious about what kind of friendship this really was, and (allegedly) ordered one of her younger brothers to go along as a chaperone.

Then Jana's friend got offered a job in Atlanta, which she took. (Allegedly) Jim Bob pulled some strings to get her that job offer, because he thought she was getting too close to Jana and that the friendship needed to end.

ETA: The Reddit sub-thread on Josh Duggar's trial is now headlined "2 Convictions and Counting"

And since the family kept quiet for years about Josh's much worse activities, a dozing babysitter doesn't seem like the sort of thing another family member would call the police about. So maybe it was neighbours who are fed up with the Duggars too.

Except Jana never went to high school, or any school for that matter- they all were semi-educated at home with a fundamentalist curriculum, so there is something "off" about this story from the start.

If I understand all the acronyms correctly, they became friends at high school age at some kind of fundamentalist course/workshop series for young women.

I was raised in a pray in tongues, be not of the world type of church. Because kids raised in that environment are so restricted and taught that any deviation from Christ like behavior is a straight path to hell, these groups actually can be a hot bed of, well, maybe not depravity, but behaviors that out do their non-religious peers.

For example, the group I was raised with had much, much higher % of teen pregnancy and drug addiction than compared to the regional norms.

This sounds like my experience with the Catholic school vs. public high school in the 60s. Want to find booze or weed? Head to the South Catholic party.

The gossip about Jim Bob wanting to separate his daughter from another girl reminds me of something that happened to my mom in HS. Everyone in our family at the time was Catholic and sent their kids to Catholic school. When my mom was in HS, one of the nuns told her mom that she thought my mom's friendship with another girl was unnatural and unhealthy. (The implication being that they were lesbians.) My grandmother got so mad, she pulled my mom out of Catholic school and put her in public school.

This incident is one of many that has led me to believe that many ultra-religious people have dirty minds and are obsessed with sex.

This Josh things gives me flashbacks to when a close friend and coworker of my then-husband was arrested. One night he was sitting next to me at a role playing game and 2 mornings later, the FBI was in his office and home.
He eventually pled guilty to abusing a young girl and a baby, taking photos of them and sharing them, and soliciting one of his photo-swapping buddies to kill his wife so that she'd never know what he'd done. I think he's serving over 300 years in a maximum security facility.
It was a big case with US and Canadian police involved and they went after a bunch of the photo-swapping group. The only thing that he did right was plead guilty instead of going to trial. He fooled almost everyone. Weirdly, he didn't start until after he'd had heart surgery. He told someone that after the surgery, he no longer could rein in bad thoughts like that. I feel so bad for the little girl, because those pictures are easily identifiable as her at that age. This news just made me pray that she never meets someone that recognizes her from them.

There's this thing in Robert Heinlein's stuff where there's a spot that people guilty of certain crimes are dropped in this walled-off wilderness area. That's it. sink or swim - deal with nature, animals, and the other humans that have survived. Frankly, jail is too good for them.

Jana confirms that the child endangerment citation had to do with one of the kids slipping out of the house while she was babysitting.

I'm curious why she pleaded not guilty, if the authorities she dealt with all agreed that it was an innocent mistake. The two parts of her story don't quite add up.

I’m sure it must be difficult to keep track of eleventy billion Duggar kids running around the house with names all beginning with J.

Pleading not guilty is pretty de rigueur in the US. Also, Child Welfare may have said it was an innocent mistake but they aren't the ones who can drop the charges. That has to be done by the District Attorney's office.

That’s happened in my neighbourhood a few times since we lived here. I’ve personally returned children to their homes twice, and had my child returned to me once too. It happens. At certain ages, kids are curious and have zero sense of danger. And nobody can supervise multiple children 100% of the time. I don’t really understand why she was charged, if that’s all that happened.

I think because the neighbor called the police. Once the police get involved, all bets are off as to what will happen. The officer who responded might have thought he had no choice, for example. Or maybe he didn't like Jana's answers to his questions. Or was having a bad day.

What I wonder is why the neighbor did call the police and didn't just return the child.
