Music I wish someone would skate to: 2020 Edition :)

My wish is always Beethoven 7th Symphony 2nd Movement I love how it starts off slowly and then gets going!!
I realize I'm responding to this almost a year after the fact, but I hadn't noticed this thread before. This is always my wish too, as it's my absolute favourite piece of classical music. To date, I've only seen two competitive programs with this music:
  • Elizaveta Stekolnikova & Mark Fitzgerald of Kazakhstan did their free dance to this music in 1998-99, which is actually how I was introduced to the piece, when I saw it live at 1999 4CC. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJCrRlJFCW4
  • Christina and William Beier of Germany included the piece within a Beethoven medley in 2009-10. I can only find their Euros performance on YouTube, which looks like it wasn't their best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBZ8TnQm-6I

I was hoping when it was included in the climax of The King's Speech that skaters and choreographers would pick up on how great it would be for skating music, but no such luck. I figure if it didn't happen then, it's probably never going to. It's too bad, as I'd love to see a pairs team or singles skater take it on.

Thanks for the links! ?

I have a vain hope that someone will tell me that I've missed some programs and produce a few more :) In the meantime, it gave me a good excuse to watch Stekolnikova & Fitzgerald's program again. They were maybe not the strongest technical skaters, but that's still one of my favourite ice dance programs ever and not just because of the music selection.

I'd love for someone to skate to songs by the Russian band Little Big.

It would void me out of my mind.

Did you see Russia's Eurovision entry for this year? I don't think I have the sufficient level of expertise in the broader cultural context of contemporary Russian music to evaluate it lol, but it was something else.

I got so distracted by the Beethoven discussion that I forgot the original reason I was reading this thread to begin with. After watching a lot of 90s skating, we need to bring back more skating to movie soundtracks. Two in particular that I feel are really underused are Little Women (1994) and Legends of the Fall.

I feel like we really need a good program to the Far & Away soundtrack. I know there were some back in the day but that is one of my favorite soundtracks.

I also would kind of like to see a team (maybe Hawayek & Baker) try to put together a program from the Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (Netflix) because some of the music, especially Double Trouble and Husavik, are great songs.

Also, the Enola Holmes soundtrack has some great potential.

Another piece that I'd love to see a singles or pairs program to is the Grand Canyon Suite by Ferdi Grofe.

I think the skating world needs something along the lines of "Don't Cha" by Pussycat Dolls :D:p.

I don’t think anyone competing right now can pull that off effectively.
There was a US dance team (can't recall which one) that must have been reading this thread last summer because there was a PCD free dance at Nationals this year. And, I stand by my comment in the pbp thread there... I never knew I needed a PC program until then but, if the best team to skate to trashy, low brow '00s American pop music is Hubbell/Donohue. I need this to happen. Who has the IAM connections to make this happen?

Now that you mention it, I actually think Hubble/Hubble could have done a nice program to them.

I don't know about that...I have visions of that hypothetical program being just as horrifying as their Lenny Kravitz program. I still can't erase the picture in my head of Madison gyrating her hips towards her brother. I had the dubious pleasure of seeing that one live.

Langlois/Hay did their free skate to this in the 2009/2010 season and Boitano did it as a pro. I might be in the minority here, but I’ve never liked this music :shuffle:. Something about it that I can never get into.

I think either Sunrise or Cloudburst would be very effective for a ladies program. I'll have to watch those programs later.

Far & Away would be a good choice and I don't think there have been many skaters who have used it at all. The only skaters I can think of with a full program to it are Elvis Stojko in 1993 and I also recently came across Gheorghe Chiper at 1999 Euros skating to it. Other than that, Carolina Kostner and Bradie Tennell both had Far and Away in John Williams medley programs in juniors. But no one else is coming to mind.

I agree this is great music! I feel like Keegan Messing would be a good fit for it.

Wirtz/Wirtz also had a free skate to Far and Away in 2001. I think that was their best program.

Oh yeah, how could I forget that! I agree it was their best program and I even saw their best skate of it live. And yes, this would definitely be a good choice of music for Messing. I can picture him in the suspenders already!

Basically I feel like any of Elvis’s choices would work well for Keegan LOL. I mean, will anyone fight me over thinking that Keegan would also do a great Dragon program?

Since I'm listening to my classical music mix while I work, a few more are coming to mind, most of which have been skated to at least once, but are underutilized in my opinion:

  • Alexander Borodin's In the Steppes of Central Asia - can't think of anyone that has skated to it although it has made good background music for gymnastics fluff pieces in 1992 and 1996
  • Verdi's La Forza del Destino - I can only think of Kovarikova & Novotny's free skate that they won their 1995 World title with
  • Rachmaninov's Morceaux de fantaisie, Op. 3: No. 1, Elegie - Patrick Chan in 2013 and 2014 is the only competitive program I can think of, although Katia Gordeeva also had a great pro program in the late 90s.
  • The Illusionist movie soundtrack - for whoever wanted Philip Glass, I think this would be a slightly more accessible Philip Glass. Canadian Diane Szmiett skated to it in 2007-08, but I'd love to see someone else take it on.
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel movie soundtrack - In this case, I do think the definitive program has been done, as Seguin & Bilodeau's 2014-15 short program would be hard to top, but it's such fun music that I'd still like to see a few more people try.
  • Vivaldi's Mandolin Concerto in C Major - preferably done as a Drop Dead Gorgeous program. This is really well-known classical music, but I still don't think I can come up with any skating programs to it, surprisingly.
  • Elgar's Variations on an Original Theme - I can't come up with any competitive programs to this one either, although Jeff Buttle skated to it in Stars on Ice (and probably used it for the Japan Open, although those videos always disappear right away so I wouldn't know for sure)
  • Mozart's Fantasia in D Minor, K.397 Andante - Malinina used this for her short program in 1998-99 and everyone realized that her presentation skills were pretty good when she skated to something other than Aladdin.
Maybe there are people who have skated to these pieces of music that I don't know about or have forgotten and if so, I would love to know about those programs so that I can watch them.

IIRC, the SOI cast skated to music from the Grand Canyon Suite as an opening number (2004 "Time" tour?).

Didn't Capellini & LaNotte skate to music from "Far & Away" one season?

Russian Woman by Manizha, Russia’s controversial entry for Eurovision 2021. Wouldn’t this be a great show number for Empress Tuk?

I watched "The Blue Lagoon" last night for the first time.
The music is actually quite beautiful.
Has anybody ever skated to it?
I mean with all those hooker programs to "Roxaaaaaaaaaaanne" and/or "Moulin Rouge", a "Blue Lagoon" program would be absolutely tame.
