From Russia with Love [#35]: Winter 2019

lets not get ahead of time... i have no doubt in Eteri's productivity... but realistically, her prospectively top 5 boys are one in Jr. (Samsonov) and 4 in novice (Lukin, Knyazev, Fedotov, Kolesnikov) and the last 4 have a long way to go and to try the international competitions.

the rest are......
Jr. turn Sr. Erohov (20) is a question mark, he is leaning now towards coaching rather than competing and is a helper to Dudakov with younger groups.

Erohov is a question mark... he was never high up in ranks.
Kuniza - 50/50... he wins a lot of local competitions, but is not known for international success (yet?).
I don't care about your numbers.
Eteri will have an entire squad of young Russian men in 5 years who will rock the world.
Full. Stop.

Gorshov says it's Buianova's decision if Artur goes to senior Worlds.

“With European champion Dmitry Aliyev, the situation is clear. As for Danielyan, there’s still a month and a half before the World Cup, you don’t have to hurry - his coach should decide. As for Sasha Samarin, yes, it’s a failure. We’ll understand the situation,” he said Gorshkov.

When do the announce the world teams?

I know there are some question marks for the second man (is there???) to go with Dmitri but I assume all the others will remain the same (P/K surly did more then enough to get the third pairs spot)

2nd spot is Artur's unless Buyanova declines, Gorshkov said they have over month to decide. She said she hasn't thought about it yet, she's in euphoria.

Alena Kanysheva has retired from single skating and wants to try herself in ice dance. She moved to Tutberidze last spring, learnt a 4 toe but haven’t competed since last year due to injury.

Wow, exceptional work from Team Tutberidze here. I hope that 4toe on instagram was worth it.

Wishing Kanysheva nothing but the best going forward.

Oh no; I was so looking forward to see Kanysheva (this season).
Her SP looked amazing at the test skates :(

Well, I remember that bright smile forever.

Hope we see her again in dance at least.
All the best!

Kanysheva is still quite young. She still has a chance to get somewhere ice dance. Tutberidze’s daughter was roughly the same age when she switched and it seems it was the best decision she could have made. The question is how badly injured Kanysheva has been and whether it will be hindering her progress in ice dance like it did for Pitkeev, or whether she is now completely healed.

Krylova says that Sergei Mozgov is still injured, a surgery is planned for the next month, they could miss entire next season.
Which goes to show there are no guarantees in figure skating regardless of discipline. Grab the medals when you can.

Tutberdize's daughter's mom could afford the best dancing coach. Am not sure what is the state of Kanysheva's parents, but somehow am not very hopeful...

Wasn’t Stavitskaya starting with ice dance at Zhulin’s group at the age of 19? So it seems that the access to decent coaches is there, if one is lucky. Stavitskaya’s problem was that she left it too late, and at 19 she was an ice dance beginner, competing in seniors against those who got to seniors after winning medals at junior worlds and JGPF. She didn’t have a chance at 19, being a beginner. If Kanysheva manages to persuade a decent coach to take her into his/her group, and gets a partner who is not that much older than she is and who has quite a few years of junior eligibility, within two years they may get JGP and then it is up to them.

The designer of Shulepov’s controversial Schindlers List costume has spoken out defending her creation and basically says that the public and the ISU didn’t understand the art behind the design.

Figure skating is more than just sport. It is a form of artistic expression. And the reduction to glittery costumes in candy colors is not my understanding of this art. Therefore, I was very happy about the ISU nomination in the "Best Costume" category. Because this costume is a tribute to the famous film "Schindler's List", which is considered a symbol against oblivion. The choreographer and the skater have consciously chosen the Main Theme of the award-winning film and the costume inspired by it to project this courageous symbol on the ice. That is why it makes me sad that the ISU nomination has been withdrawn. Figure skating can do so much more

The thing is it wasn't a good design because way too many people thought it was a prisoner and a Nazi. Pretty much everyone here initially reacted negatively because they thought that. If it had somehow been really clear that the grey half was Schindler I don't think people would have objected.

Shulepov’s very stern, slightly aggressive facial expressions during that program didn’t really help either. A lot of the photos taken of him in that costume looked a bit menacing. If he’d had softer more vulnerable expression then I expect the costume would have worked better too.

Of course, I understand that no harm was meant by him or his costume designer. It was a mis-step though.

I wish Kanysheva all the best in ice dance. (Incidentally, her dress for the SP @Jeschke posted above was one of my favourite costumes that season.)

I don't know if she should jump at the first opportunity to get a 'celebrity' partner--by which I mean a markedly older and more experienced ice dancer whose previous partnership was recently dissolved or something like that--if one presents itself. While that might give her better access to coaching/training resources, I just can't see it working out for her in the long term. If she's serious about making the switch to ice dance, she should work on her skills first and take her time trying out with different partners around her age. She needs someone she can grow (and grow up) with.

Well, I think dressing up as a prisoner with a star and a number and the whole thing is not great even on its own. If you had removed the suit half, it still would have looked basically like a halloween costume thing, which I think would have bothered a lot of people. It's really not a subject to go overly literal with the costume.

According to this video, TAT says she has made her season's best climbing upstairs to their commentator's position in Graz. :yikes: She is a great athlete, isn't she? :)

TAT for World Champion! :cheer2:

I could not have made it up those stairs. I have hip issues, but probably could manage the climb slowly. But given my occasional psychological discomfort with climbing up high and the fact that the stairs are metal, not wood (yes I'm sure they are sturdy) I expect I would have frozen.
